Hey can someone clear this up for me, everyone keeps complaining that the melee in Reach has changed.
I don't understand how?
In halo 3 it was 2 melees or one in the back to kill.
In reach it is 2 melees, or one in the back to kill.
where is the change?
why is everyone up in arms about this?
Posted by: m3rcurial Bleedthrough sheilds made for incredibly boring AR rush beatdown fights. The change was to deter that boring gameplay, and add another layer of skill so you have to fully clear the shield before beating down.
Except that it doesn't make sense at all because it doesn't apply to every weapon/form of damage but lol.

No melee bleed through.
Posted by: A 3 Legged Goat In Reach, any damage done prior to the shield popping will not carry over to the health. The exception is splatters, grenades, and 1-hit kill weapons. Let's say shields are 100 pts and health is 100 pts for a total of 200 pts. In H3, if you do 150 pts of damage, the other 50 will not be absorbed by the shield and instead impact health (which was still working behind the scenes in H3). In Reach, Any damage you do to the 100 pts of the shield will not carry over to the health no matter its value. Even if you have 1 pt of shields left, it'll absorb the damage. The reason this mechanic is disliked by players is because it leads to double melee's. Since your shots don't matter until you pop their shields, players often resort to punching twice instead of shooting like they would in H3. While I admit that AR rushing was a frustrating tactic, I preferred the fact that they were at least using their guns. Fun tip: In H3, it took 15 seconds for your shields and health to fully recharge.
Like you said at least in halo 3 they needed skill they actually had to aim the AR and reduce your shield first. Now we have noobs who just sprint up to you and immediatly go for the beat down. Thats so much better, thanks bungie. (sarcasm hint hint) [Edited on 02.27.2011 9:31 PM PST]

Skill is irrelevant in this game. Randomness is Reach.
Actually the fact of the matter is it adds more skill. If you are bad enough at playing that you start shooting someone, don't pop the shields and double melee and die, then you deserve what you get. The added layer of skill is knowing whether it's best to double beatdown, or shoot to pop shields and then beatdown, or simply just shoot them. And good Reach player will tell you that 90% of the time you don't want to be getting into a melee battle with someone if possible anyways! A simple tap of the RB button to pop my shields, and one more to kill me? No thank you!
Posted by: xUNCxLEGENDARYx Reach's system is better, but the best system would allow bleed-through with a substantial damage reduction.
Yes, because making Sprint/Double Melee the best CQB combo ever is a good thing....
Posted by: iTz LiMeSoDa there's no bloodthrough melee damage in halo reach. You will shoot a guy 3 times in the body and beat him down, but he won't die. Then he melees you at same time, and all of a sudden you 2 are both 1 shot. Then you both proceed to beatdown again and trade kills. In halo 3, you would have shot him 3 times and killed him, and he wouldn't have killed you.
That was the thing. 65% of people were simply charging up to people with their assault rifle and meleeing for kills. This was too flawed, because the winner was decided by whoever had seen the enemy first, and one bullet was a huge difference.

Melee bleedtrhough no longer exists.

You could have no sheids and somone with low sheilds and if you melee you both would die. They are both bad. It should be 3 melees.

Ok thanks for clearing that up, so really everyone isn't angry about the melee mechanics, but rather the new shield mechanics. that's where I was getting confused. Thanks all.

Halo 3:Someone rushes you trying to double meele, you move backwards shooting he meeles you with a little shield left. You meele back he falls dead. This is called bleedthrough Halo reach:Someone rushed you trying to double meele, you move backwards shooting. He meeles with a little shield left, you meele back just removing that tiny shield. He gets another meele before you.YOU fall dead. This is not bleedthrough.

Reach's system is better, but the best system would allow bleed-through with a substantial damage reduction.
-
In H3, you could shoot a guy for a couple seconds and melee him with his shields still UP and he would be dead. In reach you have to completely get your enemies shield DOWN and then melee to kill him.
-
Melees no longer bleed-through shields in Reach.
-
In H3 your melee damage could "bleed-through" shields and do damage to health as well. In Reach you have to wait till the shields dropped.
-
In Reach, if you had even just a tiny sliver of shields, one melee would only pop your shields and wouldn't deal any damage to your health. In Halo 3, if your melee deals damage to both shields and health. That is, if you were around half shields and were melee'd, you usually died or were extremely weak. There's no bleedthrough damage in Reach.
-
Some armor bleeding crap allowed players to beat down in one hit or something. I dunnnooo
