How many humans were left after the Human-Covenant war?
People kept saying 200-300 million on this forum, and I'm a little skeptical. Modern day Earth has 6 billion+ people. But then again, the humans were attacked by a massive alien army. So how many were really left? and where did you get your information?

The Bestiarium estimates 200 million, but adding the colonies that werent attacked and other UNSC outposts and things related, I would estimate it to around 500 million max. Any colonies that were left probably did not have that much populace left on it.

I cannot see Human civilization surviving with only 200 million. Regardless of whether we have Forerunner technology sitting around and the mantle on our shoulders, Humanity would collapse. If Earths population was reduced from billions to 200 million, then it is very likely that all major cities and infrastructure have been destroyed. With only 200 million people, the economy is going to take a lifetime to recover. Innovation and production will freeze as there will be hardly any workforce and profession. I cannot help but think that realistically the only place Humanity would be heading would be the stone ages.

I think what we need to take out of this is that we need more story on the battle of earth and the story behind it to try and explain some things that seem a bit confusing right now. Seriously we don't know much compared to reach. The battle of earth took place for what like 2 + weeks? a book about it would do it nicely since the sheer scale of it would be massive.

We can Speculate about this all day. The Official number is put at somewhere around 200 Million. But as stated its impossible to count just how many refugees there are. I imagine much of Humanity fled, hopeing for some chance of survival. There are so many that are probobly unnacounted for. -Rebels, still in hideing. -Refugees, scattered amongst the Stars. -Fleet Admiral Cole, and his band of Survivors that are currently unnacounted for. -The Ship Spirit Of Fire, Lost trying to find its way back home. I think for many, many years during the Post-War Era and mabey even a little beyond, We will conntinue to find groups of Survivors, both small and large in number, amongst the Stars. Much like how today we keep finding pockets of Japanese soldiers from WW2, that dont even know the War has been over for 70 years almost now.

Yeah, 200-300 Million HAS to be JUST earth's population. That is like ONE large country surviving. That is not technically a LOT of people. Even after a genocidal campaign. There were still SOME planets that were never invaded by the covenant.

There's the betsarium number, but at the end of every war there's no way to count all the refugees. Look at The Cole Protocol and how human refugees just hid, or scattered. 200-300 Million might be what's left on Earth, or just in the Sol system. Another figure I can remember is about 25 Billion dead, out of 30 or so.

I remember that Cleveland(?!) in Halo: Uprising was attacked to say the least, so it's fair to assume that surrounding areas in North America were also heavily hit, but other than that, not many locations or actual numbers are given. I remember there being two waves of Covenant invasions on Earth. Halo 2 and Halo 3. The second had a small excavation fleet that only stuck around in Africa...
