In the quite abso--blam!--lutely brilliant trailer cortana says some words that are niggling at me, so i turned my super headphones up load and took down what she said. evidently it's this.
I have defied gods and demons
I am your shield, i am your sword
I know you, your past, your future
This is the way the world ends
Now thinking back, i was sure i had heard some of the words before, but i honestly can't think where. I had thought it was Gravemind's backwards poem in mausoleum suite, but that's different. Does anyone have any idea where these words are from? I have an inkling that the first 2 lines are a quote, and the second two are simply cortana herself, that can be gathered simply from the tone of her voice. I'm going to try searching about for the words, but my internet is playing up, so feel free to help me

i believe the most overlooked thing is the sky. Odd anyone?

Halo 3: where now you can triple wield rockets with the "flip of the coin" skill level,...unless,... they take two steps backward (halo:ce), to take three steps forward (halo 3).
Posted by: Mid7night I decided to just Google each line individually and see what came up, here's the result for the first line: I didn't get a chance to read all of the following, but there's a point where one character says "I've defied gods and demons alike!" Maybe read the story, maybe it'll tell us something? Ok I've listened to that Trailer for 20 min, and you know what your right, There is a familliar saying. But not in the words, what they say. Listen to the video with your eyes closed, no I wont come to your house and -blam!- you. As your listening you can hear the faint sounds of the gravemind talkin in the backround. This shows that wow, the Gravemind we'll be back. Another thing, look at the video and when a banshee comes over head, pause it quicly, there are small feet, not elite feet, so maybe elites are on your side. [Edited on 5/9/2006]

""""""""""""""""""""" REPOST """"""""""""""""""""""""""""" Well apparently everyone is missing the point about when cortana said, "i know your past and your future." Obviously this is a vision that cortana is giving to the masterchief prologue to halo2, this vision is taking place in halo1 when the masterchief still had his downgraded assault rifle. That is why the bansheese didnt attack him (he was seeing it in a vision the covenant couldnt see him). I think maybe cortana got some new abilities from gravemind (who knows.) but its whatever you guys think, but i like my theory and im sticking to it until the game comes out. Oh and read the cortana letters, theyre pretty interesting.
Posted by: Blackhawk75
Posted by: Pyrojoe
Posted by: DrDark The "I am your shield, I am your sword" is a refference to the fact the a Cortana is a type of sword.
I believe you mean a Katana.
no cortana was the name of a sword used by someone whos name eludes me right now. I'm sure someone helpful will help me out with a name.
Charlamene, it was his sword, and it is sword because normal swords were used in western lands like europe, in asia and the far east katanas were more used.
Posted by: GREA5Y 7R1GGER i just thought of something.... what if cortana found or learned the history of halo... notice she didnt say "this is how EARTH ends"... she said world.... maybe she is reading back a transcript of some kind.... maybe created right before the last use of the halos
The use of the word "world" makes it a direct reference to T.S. Eliot's poem, which she brought up in the Cortana letters.

Ark of the Covenant- The seat of God Forerunners final resting place maybe? And about the Eliot poem references to a "hollow valley" and "in this last of meeting places" caught my eye as the Ark seems to be in some sort of valley or crater and the last of meeting places is up for the last place of the Forerunners or possibly humans? Also, seems to me that Cortanas voice sounds distorted like the voices of those copies she made of herself in First Strike maybe she multiplied herself to avoid being overpowered by the Gravemind? It seems that the next novel will answer questions about the remaining Spartans and whether or not Cortana ever gave all of that Halo data up to the UNSC or if she was still "bloated" with all of those records when she met the Gravemind.

It could be that Earth is the world destroyed, not UNIVERSE like we would like to think. But even though the world is destroyed, life can remain. Or, the Chief travels back in time (very hypothetical), thus the "Reclaimer" speels from 343 Guilty Spark in H1. And since the armor is distinctly different in H1 vs H2, the Chief could now have the upgraded armor that 343 was talking about. (And some Marines follow him and thus the tags in the book on the ground). It could also be that some remaining Humans are still alive and are captured by the Covenant, and that is why there are many ships around the object in the ground. The object in the ground could be a large ship, thus the Ark that was mentioned in H2, and therefore the small ship that the Chief took to Earth (supposedly) was of the same design. Just an idea. As for the banshees being ignored, it could be that they are pre-occupied by the object, or they are Covenant friendlies commanded by the Arbiter.

What about the implications? if cortana has been controlled by the gravemind, then she failed to detonate High Charity, then the flood are still in "outbreak mode" The arbiter & covenant on delta halo are at risk. The humans still on Delta are at risk. The flood could manage to escape Delta Halo, I'm not sure if High Charity is mobile w/out the Arc to power it, but In Amber Clad coud probably be salvaged by the flood
Posted by: ABlaz3d I still think Cortana said "swords" not" sword" because maybe Gravemind and her are now the same.See where i'm going with this?
Maybe...but if they were one and the same, why bother making it plural? And it would be more like "we are your swords", not "I am". She/he/they'd probably have proper grammar.

when she says demons, I believe its half gravemind talking, which makes me think that she is still in high Charity with gravemind. Mabye gravemind tells her that the forunners had super soldiers just like the master cheif, "the past" and how their race was destroyed, "his future" the future of the super soldiers that they use to have, just thinking over the top of my head !

In the trailer, Gravemind and Cortana's voice are done as one. I think, that the Gravemind has gotten to Cortana. The structure in the trailer is of Forrunner design. I remember that style, because in Halo 2, that's how the building was when you would go search for the index. Plus, it was at the end when MC took off with the Prophet on the Forrunner ship. That design is from Halo 2, and you have to go back to Halo 1 to find more secrets from the trailer. I'm doing it right now. Because I remember there is more to this trailer, which links back to Halo 1. Marathon as well, tells more to what Halo 3 may be about.

whoa whoa whoa...This may have been alluded to, but i dont know cuz i'm lazy and dont want to read every single post. Whoever said this is a sequel to h2. This could very well be a prequel. Unlikely as that is, with the gravemind undertones, it is none the less a possibility, a possibility just within Reach.
What about the whole elites getting replaced by the brutes as the guards. Why would the banshee's just fly over master chief without firing. What if the elites teamed up with the humans and all the ships that were there were controlled by the elites. The whole activation of the thing at the end could just be to stop the great journey from happnening. Just something to think about.
Maybe [High Charity] coming out of the ground in Africa was more important than a tiny dot on the edge of a cliff. [Edited on 5/9/2006]

By the sounds of it, it sounds like Gravemind would talk. So...that means Gravemind probaly took Cortana over, not that she has gone rampant. Think about it...Gravemind can't move High Charity himself, so using Cortana as an AI to move it for him and control her. And also in halo 2 remember Cortana said she was running into some kind of powerful AI in High charity, perhaps that was gravemind and he (it?) eventually took her over while they were at High Charity.

The trailer was weird, but gave me a hint of what the game's going to be like. All yer explanations of what Cotana meant in the trailer is great, especailly the guy who explained what the Gravemind was trying to explain. The Covenant have taken controll of Earth, and has unburried a massive artifact, which I think is connected to the activated rings. (Actually, it prolly is) My curious thoughts are; 1) What will happen with the Arbiter, Sgt. Johnson, and Miranda? 2) Will the Master Chief die in this final game? 3) What will happen to Cortana? And in the storyboards, why is she screaming? These questions are fumbling in mind, but I will never know until Bungie releases more updates. Hopefully, they'll strip my questions, and post it up on the "What's Update?" topics, which'll be in like...forever... Halo 3 is going to be greatly anticipated to milli-no. Billions of fans across the world. I'm hoping that the multiplayer won't get as tiring as Halo 2, and the AI will be 10x smarter in campaign. That's all we hope for the future...well, at least me...
Posted by: bsol the one I do hope I am not repeating anything already stated, but has anyone looked at the FAQs? "I spotted an Easter Egg in the trailer after I watched it a few times. How do you explain that? The New Mombasa City Council had an incredibly efficient public works department until and even during the tragic and devastating Covenant invasion. " Check out the other ones, if anyone has any guesses, do reply.
I believe it has been determined that the 'easter egg' references a Grunt Crossing sign.

i'm sorry if this is a re-post but, when i thought cortana, i thought charlemagne as in the french charlemagne the following is from the bulfinch charlegmane legends
The rest of the day and the next were spent in the rejoicings of the army. Turpin in a solemn service implored the favor of Heaven upon the youthful knights, and blessed the white armor which was prepared for them. Duke Namo presented them with golden spurs, Charles himself girded on their swords. But what was his astonishment when he examined that intended for Ogier! The loving Fairy, Morgana, had had the art to change it, and to substitute one of her own procuring, and when Charles drew it out of the scabbard, these words appeared written on the steel: “My name is Cortana, of the same steel and temper as Joyeuse and Durindana.” Charles saw that a superior power watched over the destinies of Ogier; he vowed to love him as a father would, and Ogier promised him the devotion of a son. Happy had it been for both if they had always continued mindful of their promises.
here's a link legends
