I'm really confused. For some reason two people from America today were -blam!- baffled when I said the time was "18:08" etc. They then argued that there were only 12 hours in a day and that that wasn't a real time.
Do Americans really only use the 12-clock format? If so my mind, has just been blown.
P.S. If this is true and you are American, do you ever use the 24-hour clock?
-
Yep. They us 24hr in the military.
-
Medical field has to use the 24 hour format. I have most of my electronic devices set in 24 hour formats.
-
most normal pepole use the 12 hour clock format but the milatary uses 24 hour clock and they call it milatary time
-
In Canada most people use the 12 hour time. Only the military uses 24 hour time.
-
I use both. 24, if I so choose.
-
12 hours. Yup. Yet another example of our inefficient measurement systems.
-
i never actually say eighteen thirty or such, i say 6 30, but when written i'd write it as 18:30 instead of 6:30PM, i grew up in the US just so you know, but yeah people there use the 12 hours system
-
I think we do use 12-hour clocks in the sense you mean them. We have 8:08 A.M. and 8:08 P.M. 8:08 P.M. = 20:08 in 24-hour time.
-
Yes, we do.
-
I've used in in various jobs. Public Safety, Healthcare, Information Technology. But it's not that widespread in most civilian and non-tech circles.
Posted by: XXJACKXX14 There are 24 hours in a day, but in America we split it into two 12 hours. Ante meridiem in the morning and post meridiem in the evening.
-
Most people in the US use the 12 hour clock. The 24 hour clock is referred to as 'military time' since it's standard in the military. Being from an Air Force family, I'm used to the 24 hour clock.
-
Posted by: Captain K Mart In the military we use the 24 hour clock. I think it's so that we don't confuse the time as easily.
Or possibly due to the fact that every other country uses the 24 hour system so we can communicate times back and forth I guess? Something along the lines of that.
-
Civilian time is based on a 12 hour clock, but the military uses 24 hour time. [Edited on 01.29.2011 1:14 PM PST]

I guess in a way the UK does the 12 hour format BUT most people have the 24 hour clocks. But if its say 15:00 we just say 3pm.
-
Civilians use 12 hour clocks, and the 24 hour clock is referred to as military time.
-
I use a 24 hour format. AM and PM is the most retarded thing ever thought up.
-
Everyone uses a 24 hour clock, but it is stupid to say "Eighteen oh eight"
-
Posted by: Google Chrome Yeah we use a 12 hour time. You must have been dealing with some real dumbasses.
-
well those 2 Americans were idiots. either way, no, i don't ever use a 24-hour clock. Thats just how i learned it.
-
Some places still use the 24hr military time, but most use the 12hr time.
-
Americans do use 12 hour clock format. I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say the two people you talked to were young. I prefer the twenty-four hour clock format, but never get to use it since no one around me knows it well enough, just like the metric system.
-
Yep, most Americans use the 12-hour time. I do too, but I certainly am smart enough to know how to use 24-hour time if I need to.
-
12. Lot less complicated.
-
Americans use AM and PM. I put my phone in 24 hour mode though....its the little acts of individualism that count.
Posted by: Alpha Prime Both are used pretty interchangably here in Britain.
Yeah I'm English but everyone knows how to translate 12 hour into 24. These people were speaking to me like I was -blam!- mad haha,
