A simulated view of what they would see appears on the inside. Which allows them to have any sort of visor they want (different helmet types, etc.) and still see the same thing. Totally allows Emile to have a scratched up helmet.
How come in lone wolf your view gets cracks when you take damage? If there was a camera that got damaged, that should take out everything and leave you blind.
I think that Noble 6's armor got so heavily damaged that the layers from the visor got to the point of being fragile. He was fighting the Covenant for a while, to the point of being by himself, that he never got the chance to repair his armor. At least that's my theory.
No no, I know his armor was getting weak from so much fighting. It's just that if the view was being projected from a camera instead of them actually seeing through the visor, how can there be cracks? Wouldn't it all go out at once?
Imagine a two way mirror. I can see you, but you can't see me. Now, say that mirror gets damaged where I can no longer see you. I take out the visual shielding and now we can see each other even through thee damaged screen. He turns transparency on because the optics are damaged.

The helmet uses optics, as in, they use some sort of camera to see. How else could they zoom in with it? [Edited on 01.23.2011 4:44 PM PST]
Posted by: Loken5 Its made to be damages without affecting the users sight.. Also, do you see the scratches on your sunglasses lenses? I think not
I just scratched little Emile Skulls into my Raybans, now i cant see out of them... Thanks for the flawed logic -blam!-tard....
Posted by: Conformism Motion tracker only. If he kept an eye on the tracker he would have seen that coming.
Posted by: Deathbringer15 I think the helmets may just use a camera. If you're doing Noble Actual with different helmets, all the insides are the same so I think it might just be projected onto the inside.
Pretty much this. Makes sense. It also explains why wearing EVA doesn't make your screen asplode and why EOD doesn't shrivel it up.
Posted by: ajw34307 Think of a visor to be like a tinted window - when you look at it outside you cannot see what's inside, but vice versa the person inside can see outside. The visor is made up of different layers, Emile scratched in the skull on the outer layer, the inner layer is unaffected.
Wow! Yeah, I'd say this comment derserves the most retarded comment award, hands down!
