I've seen that there are quite a few people that come here asking what Custom Edition is and what we would recommend them to get. Thought it would be nice to just make a topic for the forum members to make recommendations.
Information on Halo Custom Edition
Halo Custom Edition is a form of Halo PC that was created by Gearbox Software to allow custom content to be put into the game. People use it to make custom maps/download custom maps. There are thousands of maps to choose from and many are amazing. Here's a list of things I suggest you to get:
I'd like to suggest you enable console. To do that add " -console" to the end of your shortcut's target directory (After the end quotation)If you don't know what I'm talking about here I go more in depth at the bottom of this post.
Map Downloading
There are a few options available to you to download maps. Most people use HaloMaps to download maps simply because it has the largest database of maps, however, there are other ways. Some communities will have their own websites where you can download the maps their servers run, like RealWorld. Another way you can download maps is to use HAC2 or OpenSauce which, among other features that I'll discuss in the section below, do map downloading in-game.
Here is a fast and easy tutorial on how to manually add maps
Utilities
HAC2 is a utility developed by Btcc22 as a general purpose utility that takes care of almost every other functional utility, and more, that the community developed for HCE. For example, in-game map downloading, FoV adjustment, see across all versions in the server browser, and server favoriting. It's a simple install that requires you to drop the "loader.dll" file into the controls folder in your Halo PC/CE directory. Yes, it does work with both the base game of Halo PC and Custom Edition. This utility is up to date with the 1.10 patch.
OpenSauce is a utility developed by Kornman and FieryScythe with the purpose of being a swiss army knife type utility like HAC2 but with a heavier focus on engine modification for things such as post processing (It makes things subjectively pretty). While this utility is not up to date with patch 1.10, it works with 1.09 while still using the new master server hosted by Bungie so you can still play multiplayer.
How to Enable Console
To enable your console you go to the shortcut icon to Halo Custom Edition that's on your desktop. Right click it then click on properties. You'll see a line of text that reads off as
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\haloce.exe"
What you need to do is change that to look like this
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\haloce.exe" -console
That should enable the console. To use the console, you press the ~ key right below your ESC key (That's where it is on American Keyboards anyway) It will then bring up a place for you to type your command in.
If you have any more suggestions or questions then just post them below
-
I'd say get the ones that say final on them. That is if you're deciding between the same map like "Blah blah pb2" or "Blah blah final". If you're talking about if you should JUST download maps that say "Final" at the end, I'd say no.
-
Man, I have so many questions, but just out of your recommendation should I get the single player maps that say final or the ones that don't?

And you should add some h3 maps.
Don't mess with tags unless you're going to be making maps. They're just things you can import into the maps you're making. If you want to know more about making maps go to OpenCarnage.net or some other site for help.
Posted by: grifball lover Do I save the maps to a certain place?
There's a link to a video describing where to save the maps in my original post. Right before it starts listing maps.
Posted by: grifball lover About the enabling the console I heard about cheats in maps like if you touch someone you become them.
You use Paulus' DevTrainer to do that. It's one of the links under "Utilities" in my original post.
Posted by: Lat3ksi Cool thread, Dr Syx. It's good to see someone is willing to help new players.
Thanks! Good to feel appreciated for it. xD I just remember coming here a long time ago (Back in 2004/2005) for help getting Custom Edition and all I got was a download link. I thought recently "Wouldn't it have been nice if someone would have made a full list of things I could have gotten..." Then I decided to be that person for future people.
Posted by: Shock120 Nice thread. :)
Thanks! [Edited on 03.12.2011 8:48 AM PST]
Posted by: jtulkas I've owned Halo PC since it's release in 2003. Today I decided to try Halo Custom Edition for the first time. Man, I've been missing out big time! TONS of maps, variants... heck, I even completed firefight on the Cryo map! It was a blast. Thanks for the info, Dr Syx, it made things easy.
You're welcome! Glad to help!
Posted by: Lazer55 You should add Halo Editing Kit Plus to the tools list :P
I put it under the main files list. It seems to much of a major part to what Custom Edition is to just be in the same classification as the DevTrainer stuff.
Posted by: grifball lover Wait what happens when you enable the console.
You have the ability to do certain things like start up maps from it and manage things on your server/a dedicated server you're an admin on. By managing I mean kicking, banning, adding a map/gametype to the playlist, skipping a map/gametype on a playlist, and all of that good stuff. I mainly put it in there so that people could know how to play single player maps on Custom Edition, though. [Edited on 03.11.2011 2:31 PM PST]
Posted by: hihi100202 [thread saved] Could you elaborate on doing the single player maps a bit more? I do not understand.
Here's a video tutorial on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AnbEcyCgvg&feature=related (P.S. or you can just read what I added to my original post if that's what you were wondering.)
Posted by: gst353 Nice thread. I'm fairly new to custom edition as well, so it's good to have a list of all the maps worth downloading. I had no idea someone had created a firefight mode for CE, either. I'll be downloading that for sure. A ninja ought to sticky this.
Thank you! I'm glad to help (: My favorite thing out of any of the Firefight maps is the buying system on Firefight Portent. I've seen plenty of times that I'd actually rather play that than Reach's firefight. (I like Reach's firefight more, but, I've just had times where I felt like playing Portent's instead) [Edited on 01.16.2011 8:10 AM PST]
Posted by: NuclearSlurpee Quick Question: Do I just download Custom Edition or do I need to save it to a specific place?
You have to download and install Custom Edition. It's a completely separate game.
Posted by: banj0 [thread saved]. You should put up the cryo bay firefight map as a campaign map. Search it on Halo Maps, it's really good.
I can't believe I forgot about the Firefight maps. Thank you so much. [Edited on 01.15.2011 8:41 PM PST]
Posted by: mats3r 350 Checked that the utilities that you've linked to work with 1.09?
Yes, they both work. I use them all the time to have fun offline. WHICH, reminds me, I have to add the update to the list. [Edited on 01.15.2011 8:47 AM PST]
