Why do hunters have the mark of shame?

They had been found in orbit of a gas giant and had eaten an entire Forerunner satilitte. Covies tried to wipe them out, but realized they could come in handy for exploring "borrowed" Forerunner tech. As punishment for their Sacriligious crimes, even though they now serve the covenant, there armor is branded with the mark of shame. Event the gold ones who guarded the dreadnaught at High Charity had the mark.

If i remember correctly it's because when they were discovered they were eating through Forerunner technology and so they were being destroyed by the Covenant but then they were utilized but they still marked them with the mark of shame (?)

It's not the Mark of Shame. Covenant glyphs have lots of similarities to each other. Easy mistake though :)
