Initially I didn't want to use the PPP combo (plasma pistol + pistol), but realised the elites have haxzors and take like 7 dmr shots to get rid of shields. The concussion rifle wieldin generals are just ridiculuously strong. I can't remember how many times I died at the start of ONI: Sword Base. And Kat's driving was so bad she ended up in the ocean. Don't know how she got there :S
Then I used the noob combo. All was well.
Your thoughts?

My friend had just finished pillar of autumn on solo legendary when I commented on the power of the plasma pistol and recommended it to him. He screamed at me.

I really don't know what the issue is with using the PP/Headshot combo. It's against the A.I. after all, and besides, sometimes you absolutely need to dispose of that Elite quickly. You still have to land the Headshot. I used it on almost every Elite, and I'm not ashamed of it. Why waste precious DMR ammo on those guys when they literally absorb a whole magazine before their shields drop? You still need to dispatch all those jackals and grunts, most of whom will take two shots (break the shield and pop the helmet respectively) to take them down.
-
I didn't use the combo, I took my time and went slowly, saved my DMR for important enemies and snuck aound some if I could. The only hard part was the end of Pillar of Autumn.
-
i beat Solo legendary without noob combo. i used patience patience and more patience. one enemy at a time
-
I always thought that "noob combo" referred specifically to Halo 2, when you dual-wielded a PP and a gun that shot bullets. Combos that involve switching weapons are more complicated than just spamming one weapon.
-
You don't have to. I did my solo Legendary playthough without using the Noob Combo. Used it for the last few Zealots before the Onager.
-
I found Legendary was hard at first, but you really just need to create good tactics, and yes the PPP combo works very well on the elites. After a while though, once I got a shotgun I just ran through. Brutes were easy to take care of with the DMR. but closer to the end of the game I needed the n00b combo again for the elites. Because there were lots.
Posted by: SNTSATION
Posted by: Sniper210 I ran through Legendary Solo without using a single Covenant item of war (Except a ghost or two, when no UNSC vehicles were around). Some fire fights got a little long, but it's all about using resources conservatively.
I find it hard to conserve ammo when Elites require single clips >< Props to you for not using PPP
I used an assault rifle or a few grenades to weaken their shields, then finished them off with a headshot from a DMR or pistol.

I used the DMR / with anything else i could find combo. it was much tougher than H3,or ODST.

Hey your lucky. I don't have the patience for it.

Bungie did a great job at giving you what you needed to get past the hard parts.
Posted by: Wisersum The "noob combo" is there for a reason... There is nothing cheap about using it. I've so far found this campaign much harder than H3 solo legendary, (though I never finished Cortana on legendary).

got throught i several times without the PPP combo. put the 'catch' skull on and chuck grenades like mad. there'll be plenty to pick up when all's said & done. shotgun works wonders, too. and the puny AR that you get...does quite well for getting rid of shields after they're softened up with some 'nades.
-
Its pretty much the only way to deal with higher rank elites(Ultra and beyond) without emptying 2 clips of DMR ammo into them
-
I didn't use the noob combo at all, i forgot to aha its possible since many of the levels you can literally sprint through
-
I did it without the plasma pistol, just takes a bit more patience.
-
I tried it but almost threw my controller through the TV screen...plasma pistol FTW ;)
Posted by: raindoc i don't get that "noob" in noob combo at all. after all, it requires more skill to hit the target with the slow plasma pistol AND score a headshot on the general, than finding and collecting ordnance to mow the enemy down in a bullet/plasma/rocket storm...
I call it noob in comparison to the normal AR/DMR/pistol attempt of killing.
-
I used PP and DMR all the time, the Elites are just to hard to deal with otherwise. Why is called a noob combo anyway? It speaks volumes for the Halo fandumb that anyone with the sense to use the available weapons to their fullest potential is dismissed as a noob.
Posted by: SNTSATION
Posted by: The Juggynaut Personally, I thought that the Legendary campaign was incredibly hard as well. But I managed to get through it after re-thinking tactics and whatnot. Everyone got different opinions on this. Oh... and never let Kat drive.
She doesn't know that you can use a turret to shoot things...
Very, very true.
