Two weeks ago I thought it would be interesting to record the 24-hour population of Halo Reach once a day, so that I could eventually chart it to see trends over time and to see how other events like game releases, game updates, weekends and holidays affect population numbers.
Now that some time has passed, I've decided to post the population data for everyone to see. This data is recorded automatically every night at midnight PST. As of the time of this writing, there's population data for 18 days. Here it is.

November 25th, 2010: Thanksgiving (USA)
November 26th, 2010: Free Gold weekend begins
November 28th, 2010: Free Gold weekend ends
November 30th, 2010: Noble map pack released for Reach
I highly recommend looking at the charts, as it makes the numbers much easier to compare to each other. If you want to follow this project, you may want to check out its homepage here (or here if that link isn't working.) There you can also view the same charts, but for Halo 3.
And before anyone asks, I do plan on creating more charts to show the data in different ways. Weekdays versus weekends would be one simple example. I'll update this post each night, since I can't do it automatically.

Great info! Many people went off and played "other" games, but they always came back. They always do. This happened during H2 and H3. They always come back. ~Delta

Great Data gathering... Reach will have longevity. Bungine may release content other than Multiplayer maps too which will increase the population as well. Saving this thread [Edited on 11.18.2010 1:11 PM PST]

I can possibly see the population going up around Thanksgiving. High school and college students are off for several days (I'm off for the week). It'll definitely spike around the holidays as well. Excellent work, OP! I'm definitely saving this to keep track.
-
Thanks, OP, this is great. Small sample size is too easily misconstrued. Thread saved, i look forward to seeing the numbers over time. Regardless, the population could be 500or 500m per day, I don't care. Its not like I ever have a problem finding a game in any hopper. :-D
Posted by: N7R I hope the population continues to drop more and more. It just doesn't like up to the epicness Halo 3 was and still is.
Sadly, you're right.

REACH population drop everyday like I though it would drop every week... Scary.

Good stats. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, especially to see if an update changes anything. Yes, diehard Halo fans feel somewhat disappointed with Reach, but it's still a good game and is still much less mainstream and easy to pick up and play than its biggest competitor. Personally I think that any updates made to the game will only serve to bring back diehards and make the experience better for those still playing. Not that that's a bad thing.
Posted by: halomanhalo
Posted by: RighteousTyrant
Posted by: halomanhalo
You should try putting that data into an easy-to-read format. Also, 90% of the people on this forum aren't going to understand that your decimals are serving the purpose that commas serve in North America.
I think is is pretty easy to read. Furthermore, those people that do not understand we're talking millions here are probably not smart enough to start up their computers anyway. Btw: if I changed it to commas -by your logic- my fellow Europeans would not understand it.....
yea.. its not easy to read at all. if you made it more easy to read people could make some use of it, until then you just have a bunch of numbers and jibberish that take entirely too much time to decipher, which almost no one on these forums will do.

Thread saved.
your right. it hasnt died by any means, but it IS CLEARLY DYING tho. a patch to this game would guarantee more people online. -fix the DMR so spammers lose 100% of the time. -make melees bleed thru shields -increase the AR's damage by a bit -fix hill order which is currently broken -make objects in forge not randomly spin for no reason when you grab them. -make wall colosseum work better as flooring, removing the insane amount of bumping that happens when you use 2 wall floors and snap them to the grid among other things
Posted by: Finnish_Spartan
Posted by: ev1l tr1t0n I think there are some fundamental issues that have put off a lot of people, like grenades and melee. A single frag grenade can kill your when you're full shields and full health
Umm... NO
Agreed. One grenade is not enough to kill you at full shields and health. Also, if people are quitting because of things like that, from a developer that has show time and time again that they do listen to feedback, what possible game could be up to their standards? Obviously they couldn't have moved to CoD, those games have far worse balance issues in greater numbers than ANY Halo game, and on top of that, Infinity Ward and Treyarch do little more to their games post launch than simply release a map pack.
