I played some Marathon since Yesterday snd I gott say I am not impressed. It feels like a mixture of Apex legends and the division, but somehow worse at what those ganes were trying to achieve.
Here are some Problems I have with the game as it is right now:
The BAD:
1.) Number one and for me the most important one: what is it I am playing this game for? I get it, you shoot stuff and you loot stuff. But then if I take my stuff on a run, and die, I loose all of it? So it is an eternal grind for loot I can loose? What is the endgame? What would me make play this game longer than a few weeks tops?
2.) The AI os dumb and does a lot of damage! The robots are just like D2 enemies but do more damage.
3.) The time to kill is way to fast for a game where I risk my loot everytime I got in. Very small window to react.
4.) the graphics are just not appealing to me, neither does the weapon design. That one might be on me...
5.) movement
Movement around the map feels slow and slugish.
How is a game called marathon, yet makes you crawl all the time because you're overheating ...
6.) I know it is a server slam but the game feels unfinished.
The good: Gunplay
That is the only thing i will positively mention. Gunplay feels similar to destiny and feels good.
The weapons I had so far feel satisfying to shoot (apart from their looks).
Overall for me Marathon is a pass. If it were free to play I might play it from time to time, but I am not paying 40€ for this.
I guess you better start recycling all that D2 content in the vault for D3... Because I really don't see the longevity of Marathon as it is right now...

Just on your bad point #1: Dying and losing gear is part of what an extraction shooter is. If you get attached to gear, you’re not gonna like that kind of game. It’s the same issue when people get to paranoid to use their best gear, use it or lose it as they say cause sitting out your best gear over fear of losing it just does nothing for the player. it’s why extraction shooters are so niche, the average gaming audience will not enjoy something that punishes you for dying. The point of it all is the thrill however. Knowing your death means you lose what you have and then you build yourself back up, rinse and repeat. You could live a round, you could live 5 rounds before you finally die but eventually you will die. That’s just how extraction shooters are, they’re more hardcore like that. Definitely understandable on why that’s a turnoff for some people. I myself have liked it so far, enough that I will be buying it after working up to season lvl 12 so far. It’s reminiscent of Dayz (another game where death=losing everything you have) for me albeit that one is a survival shooter and not an extraction. I don’t know what bungie or Sonys expectations on it are besides obviously wanting it to do well, but as long as they aren’t expecting it to be this world shattering hit game then I think they’ll be fine.

2 RepliesI would prefer people who think Marathon is worth a shot to give it one. Then to just give an honest opinion about it, good or bad. So, it wasn't for you. The world isn't over and you are one person. We'll see if others think the same but I am saddened that they went the route of Marathon instead of Destiny 3.

Totally agree! I’ve been playing for few hours and not impressed at all. Movement is just bad. Probably it will get better once you unlock different upgrades and raise your stats but PvP in destiny is far better even in its current state. And if you don’t communicate with your team is even worse to play.

The problem seems to be that Bungie thinks they can just ignore player genre expectations whenever they get inconvenient. Battle Royales don’t have any progression expectations related to gear. A standard looter shooter like The Division (2)? You don’t lose your stuff when you die. It’s “extraction shooter” sub-game (The Dark Zone)? You only lose the stuff you collected on that run…your basic build is safe But players of even that game got tired of dying all the time and losing materials and reputation. Ubisoft had to retool the game so that pve players could opt out. Marathon’s weakness imo isn’t going to be the game play…it’s going to be the game DESIGN. Players are going to get tired of losing their stuff all the time… …and the game is going to play like a frustrating combination of looter shooter, extraction shooter and rogue-like. So very few people are going to like it as it is now. Sad part is that it probably would have been a really popular gave if they had made it a looter shooter rather than trying to make it an extraction shooter.

1 ReplyTotally agreed with you. I have been saying the same thing. But It’s a mix of Apex, Minecraft, Roblox. All the squares and rectangles in the weapons models. It’s sad to see that Bungie invested all this time and resources in this very limited game called Marathon. The worst part is that Destiny has been paying the consequences for months and many more months to come.
