I’ve been thinking a lot about the current leveling system and how it’s tied to tiered loot, and I came up with an idea that I think could solve some of the issues players are feeling.
Right now, your loot tier is directly tied to your power level. So when Renegades drops tomorrow, if you’re already sitting at the 550 power cap, you’ll immediately start getting tier 5 loot. That makes a lot of people feel like half the chase disappears on day one. What you end up hunting for are the perfect rolls—and at tier 5, those can be pretty achievable pretty quickly.
Compare that to the natural progression we had during Edge of Fate, where you started at tier 1 and worked your way up. I think the changes to character leveling have been positive (especially not resetting every expansion), but not having a way to reset rewards can make things feel stale once you grab all the best loot within the first few weeks.
My Proposal (Inspired by Need for Speed)
This idea comes from a totally different genre: Need for Speed Heat & Unbound. Those games had a system where your progression changed depending on whether you raced during the day or night. Daytime gave you money; nighttime gave you reputation, unlocking more features and rewards. And at the end of each full day/night cycle, that progression reset.
That got me thinking about how something similar could breathe life into Destiny 2’s loot chase.
The “Playtime Meter” Concept
Instead of resetting our power level each expansion, what if we reset a “playtime meter” every week or season? (Name pending!)
Here’s how it could work:
- Beginning of every season everyone starts with an empty meter.
- As you play any ritual activity or game mode, your meter fills up.
- The higher your meter, the higher the tier of loot you earn at the end of activities.
- Your rewards stay at your current power level—but the tier depends on your playtime.
This way, you aren’t instantly handed the best loot just because you logged in at cap. You still have something meaningful to work toward.
For players who don’t have as much time, maybe there’s an end-of-week XP bonus to help them catch up—similar to The Division 2’s system that incentivizes players to log in and grind for rewards without completely leaving casual players behind.
Don’t crucify me for the idea—I’m genuinely trying to think of cool ways to keep the chase alive while rewarding actual play time. I think this could strike a balance between fairness, progression, and excitement.
Final Thoughts
I hope this idea gets some traction, or at least helps spark more discussion around what could make level progression or the loot chase feel more compelling again. For me, chasing a higher number isn’t as exciting as hunting down the perfect stats and rolls.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading. Curious to hear what others think—let’s keep the conversation going.
Cheers!

Yours is just a different version of the current system. The best loot should be tied to difficulty. Power level Should be scrapped entirely. Let us choose the difficulty and thus reap the rewards.
