ACCOUNT HELP - NAME CHANGE ISSUE - Unable to Change Bungie Name – Never Used Name Change

Hi Bungie Support, I'm reaching out because I’m having trouble changing my Bungie name in Destiny 2. I’ve never used a name change token before and am still using the default Bungie-provided name. The Destiny 2 companion app indicates I have a name change available, but every time I try to submit a new name, it fails. When I log into Bungie.net and go to my profile settings, it says my name can only be changed once—implying I’ve already used the one-time change, which I haven’t. I believe this may be related to the name moderation issue that affected some accounts in the past. Could you please check my account and confirm whether I’m eligible for a name change? If needed, I’d appreciate a reset or an additional name change token. Thank you for your time and support! [Your Bungie Name]

    Hey there, if you can enter a new name into the name change box, that means you do have a name change available. If it's not being accepted, that means it's hitting the name filter. Yes the text you see is misleading, it is not saying 'you can't change your name because you already did'. A player with no name changes at all would be completely unable to even enter a new name into the box. When a new player first logs in, their Bungie Name gets set to the profile name of the platform they first logged in with. If that name hits the filter, then they receive a default 'Redacted' name instead. That sounds like what happened to you. So would I be right in saying you're trying to set it to your PSN name? While I don't see why the filter wouldn't like that name, if it did indeed get rejected, it will get rejected if you try to manually change to it too.

    • What name are you trying to use? If its not saving or its saying saved and then reverting then the name is most likely being blocked by the filter. In some cases its due to browser extensions such as Privacy Badger/Adblockers etc - so if it doesn't save in a mode such as Safe Browsing/InPrivate/Incognito you can usually safely assume Bungies filter is actively blocking that name.

        If it says that you can change it only once, it means that you have at least one change left. It's probable that the name that you are inputting triggers the censorship control system and thus the change fails.

      • That message you see indicates you do still have name change(s) available. If you were out, then it would say you can’t change your name. By you entering a name & it not accepting/saving, that means the name you are trying is filtered/censored & can’t be used. You’ll need to try/use a different name.
