I don't usually use them in pve, because they can get you killed, and not even in high difficulty content, mind you, having to come so close to a powerful target, or while surrounded, is simply asking for death.
Their effective range, and unpredictable spread pattern, is the reasons I do not use them, fusion rifles, or rocket assisted firearms, are better, also they are slow to reload, have terrible ammo economy, and have few rounds in the magazine.

Precisely that, Shotguns has been so power crept in pve, that a Side arm will out do it.

If you tried shotguns in other games, even other games that are not FP shooters, you will know, that shotguns in destiny, are not a very effective option, mainly due to poor range, accuracy/ hit register. They do have impressive damage, but look at what you have to do, in order to get it, I for one, will not risk bringing a shotgun in anything that matters, even if it means doing less damage.

You are likely using a bad shotgun which is unbuffed by trench which is a big no no.
