Comp Matchmaking
So, I was playing comp the other day and had my game thrown by my team, and hard.
I was initially pretty upset with them, so I decided to check some KDs out of curiosity.
They were both .9s. They shouldn’t have been there, it wasn’t their fault.
Bungie, please tell me how your comp “ranked and skill based” matchmaking algorithm works. Also please explain how two .9s even matched in the same lobby as an ascendant player who has been top 500 in 2 different game modes (including comp) in 4 different seasons.
Are you utilizing engagement optimized matchmaking like some other studios have been? If so people will figure it out and the community will blow up in your faces, again.

4 RepliesI’m gonna be honest, I don’t think that many people are in the Comp playlist which sucks because I feel your pain, but I think it probably just matches you up with whoever sometimes because it can’t find others in the same skill level to fill teams up.

1 ReplyAgree I’m getting bad team mates and I’m having a hard time 3v1 the other team. Expected to carry and I’ve even played ascendant players while I’m trying to break out of GOLD, YES GOLD! Frigging GOLD I normally easily guild my crucible seal and mostly get to ascendant. I can’t progress this season

Looking at kd's won't ell you squat. Some players are just bad. I ha e a crap kd rn and I'm above average. I'm always solo and you get stuck in Comp, hold the zone bs and it's non stop dying trying to hold zones and revive teammates. Other days like today and yesterday I'm dying in one or two hits and I'm dumping scout clips and Redrix clips into faces and it's taking 5-6 headshots for a kill or half my shots don't register. Other nights playing the same exact way I'm the player who has the highest score on my team almost every match h and my teammates have negative every match. I don't get mad at them anymore because it's not them. It's something on Bungies' end. Tonight, even though my guns have aim assist, there is literally NONE on any of mine. Usually, you can take your fingers off aim, and if enemy runs past your reticle, it tracks them slightly. Mine does not move at all.

This exact problem kept happening to me since Final Shape dropped, which is why I just gave up on Comp. The matchmaking interferes way too much with the mode, and it can make it nearly impossible to climb as an above-average player when your teammates don’t have map awareness, proper loadouts, or general gun skill like aim or knowing when to push and when to backpedal.

The way they handled "rank based matchmaking" is a joke. They reset every player back to platinum that has already been ascendant and they still match you with your previous seasons rank, making the grind back up completely unbearable. But that's just a personal gripe. I'm also curious on these parameters of how 0.9s end up in ascendant 0 as that really shouldnt be possible.

It’s because of the horrible lobby balancing. It’s consistent every time I play comp im always going against competent players usually around a 1.5 and my teammates are constantly 0.9s and lower and they never play over a 1.0 kda. I loose almost every game. Trials to my knowledge isn’t lobby balanced and I always run teams in freelance and get teammates who can get a kill here and there.

Had the same thing, I think on ascendant + it purely matches off of rank as I saw many players than were vastly diff kds from me, not to mention a friend of mine kept playing the same people as I did and he has half of my KD.

Crucible is as a whole is a mess now , not as much people playing and Bungie obviously are doing minimal with PvP just maintaining. I think now weekends are the best time to play as more people playing at weekends. I just can’t get a game today 🤷🏼♂️

Not to say you are wrong about the KD point but while doing my Comp Emblem run I mostly faced void hunters abusing invis and RDM’s. This tanked my KD from 1.87 down to 1.35. This plus low pop and split by the other modes, rank, connection quality and if you are PC or console is why you got them. Unlucky man just got to keep going, you’ll get there.

it's matching based on comp points not kd. The comp system works better when it's this way. You KD does not and should not matter. If they matched based on KD some ppl will be playing way harder matches at the lower ranks. Yes, some matches are going to be unfair as ppl skill might now be associated with their current comp rank but in time it will be.

Do you think anything they discussed in the last twab will have any impact? Good see that other people know that companies are now using their matchmaking to drive player engagement often and little else.

Anything is better than control matchmaking. Idk how anybody with half a brain can play that. It's a disaster, clearly the algorithm dictates fun. I honestly can't stomach 1 game of control.

I'm mostly playing comp and matchmaking is worst than ever. I have a correct KD but matching sureal guys half the time (cheater/streamer/stat chaser... whatever they call themself). I don't understand its like everyday there some insanely skill player who start from the bottom of comp...

I am .9KD only solo comp player. We are meeting over 10 cheaters daily in Asia Server. Eazy goes down .9KD cause of cheaters. We wanna keep playing comp so not quit cheaters match. Bungie monitoring team is not BAN cheaters cause investigating how/what cheat tool cheaters using, how bypass BattlEye. We are victims of Bungie's cheater investigation and skill does not equal KD of comp. BTW, RBMM is good. Way better than old SBMM of Comp.
