The problem with Destiny 2...

So let's preface this with who I am. I'm nobody. I'm 50. I play Destiny 2 Solo. I couldn't play the first few years because I worked at sea (petroleum) and didn't have connectivity half the year even if I had wanted to play, so I missed the Red War and all that early content everyone says was so good and I can never get that back. I do not have a bus full of people who like to play with me, Maybe 1 friend I could get online at best if the timing was perfect, and about 99.9% of the time I play destiny, I run solo. I have a total of 2,380 hours (plus or minus) in the game. I've been playing video games in various forms since the Atari 2600. I have never once finished a raid or dungeon, or even one of the boss encounters in a raid or dungeon, not solo, and it's so daunting I have only just recently finished I think a boss in garden of salvation? But I was completely lost and I didn't do anything - to say I was carried is an understatement. Let me back up. Someone pinged me to join their fireteam. They were in Garden (I think? I'm not even 100% sure of that.) I thought I would give it a try. I have never felt so stupid and useless and humbled and humiliated in my life. 1. There was a group of 5 of them looking for a 6th, on PS, using Sony's playstation voice chat, so for a solid 5 minutes I was messing up their game because I was on the Destiny 2 voice chat and they were on Sony's playstation chat and 2. It was so blasted complicated and not at all obvious what I needed to do that I kept messing them up and getting the whole team killed and 3. When I did get killed at one point I waited over 3 minutes, no one revived me, I couldn't respawn myself, and when I finally did respawn I chased the team for 5 minutes without catching up before getting horribly lost in some stupid, not-at-all obvious maze of a way forward. Eventually I got into text chat and said "I'm holding you guys up and not helping at all, kick me so I don't waste your time." These guys were very kind about it, no one talked smack, but it was also very obvious I was more liability than help. Certainly no one objected when I told them to kick me, they did it fast. Now, I want someone at Bungie to ask themselves - "What part of that is FUN?" After 2,380 hours, I have amassed a grand total of 3 (!) spoils of conquest - which is all but useless to me, and I have never gotten those drops you can only get from raids or dungeons unless there was a way to cheese it. 3 spoils of conquest and... I don't see at all how I can get more. "Use fire-team finder!" I have. Once. And tried to get through 1 boss for 2 hours before I had to quit in frustration because none of us has ever done it and we couldn't figure this MENSA test of a boss out. P.S. and the **** icing on this **** cake is I was one of those people who's handle was changed by the system and can't get a name back. My old handle was Thjazi. Nothing inappropriate, nothing -blam!- or demeaning or racist or obscene, Thjazi, a giant from norse mythology, but now I'm "Guadian6633." Yeah. THAT'S fun.

You'll sadly not get sympathy here unless you can play destiny blindfolded on wired banana controller while soloing The witness. That is what destiny has been geared for, the speed runners and the ultra elite. "A game for everyone is a game for no one." Yeah, well, a game for the dwindling few is a dead game.

    • it's to bad bungie couldn't make raids without over complicating every mechanic . to have a raid that's so fun that mechanics are the easiest part but still a challenge . that would take some sharp developers . but wouldn't it be nice to just drop in blind and still manage it. more reliant on your build then running mechanics. which is a big turn off to many many players.

Hey nobody, Another nobody here and I have to say, your post is actually making me leave a comment for once. Really hit me hard as I could feel my own play experience being described over, and over, and over… in that regard, you are far from alone. I personally assume that the ~90% drop in players has more to do with people like us who have similar play style and experience(s) in this game than people might realize. It’s really weird to think while I have way less hours (~1,000) also zero raids for me, zero GM strikes, zero trials, zero drifter games (gambit?) I don’t even bother.. it’s really hard to just log into this game and have fun… if there’s a power reset? Oof there goes weeks, and weeks of grinding to hopefully, maybe reach pinnacle cap… which I now refer to as the entry fee for end game content. Should be a game not a job right? So, I go through that painful experience (again) for what? Buggy RNG? Mechanics that literally cannot be completed by a solo player? I mean who thought that was a good idea? I mean not even a back door, or option for solo mechanic? While I have completed a few of the dungeons solo, and got some artifice armor back when it was locked in master dungeons - even then I had to lap the first encounter in spire of the watcher lol. (You could get artifice armor while only having to beat 2-3 champions when it was in rotation).. I think that solidifies the point though. Unless you’re in this core group of hardcore D2 players which seems to hover around ~20-30k on steam, good luck even trying to play this game… and the comments only validate it - hey it’s not Bungie it’s you! Yeah, no argument here… but I also have money, and more importantly, time. So, if I am even partially right, and a big majority of the players leaving share a story like this - well we all know the current state of affairs at Bungie… While we all agree I suck at D2, I just can’t get past this: (sorry sweat, I love you) I recently watched a video of sweatcicle spending I believe 6 weeks trying to get 1 exotic item from a dungeon - unsuccessfully… I will never have that kind of time or ability to spend in D2 lapping any of the recent dungeons. How does that encourage me to pick this game back up? Answer - it only shows me what a good decision I made to play other titles… it can’t be all me, all the time.. Sadly, this game will have to stay uninstalled

        • I’m almost 59, I’ve had two strokes and my coordination and reflexes are shot. I can get spoils of conquest on each character by running the start of one raid…Avarice? Over and over, but that just entails shooting things and running on, basically. I simply don’t have the recall these days to attempt a raid or dungeon. It’s all mechanics and this and that, and I just don’t have the energy (I have Fibromyalgia, am Autistic with ADHD) to sit through 2-4 hours to complete something. And the last thing I want to do is spoil the enjoyment of others by slowing them down or screwing up. So, I miss out on stuff and that’s just how it must be. The game used to be fun. I was younger, fitter, had a clan who were happy to carry me most of the way…which isn’t great, but it got me so far, but now D2 is all about mechanics and requires greater skill/reflexes than I can muster. No, it’s not fun… not like it used to be.

        • I feel this. I do ritual activities and solo content. I was disappointed that the seasonal story wasn't made for solo players. Level up to play content that is higher level and increased difficulty. If I wanted that, I would play the difficult content. Don't make it mandatory. I just want a good story. I feel like they lost the storytelling aspect. I probably won't purchase the next season since I couldn't finish the revenant story.

          • The game does a very poor job of teaching its players what's expected of them. From the New Light "experience" to the endgame raid experience, you're basically just thrown to the wolves and told to figure it out. But since no one has time for that, they're actually just expected to go watch a content creator that figured it out for them, and these two issues are the roots from which almost all other problems branch from. Much of this could be alleviated in a way that lets players learn "on the fly." That is, trickle in mechanics along traversal that foreshadow a portion of what you'll be doing in a major encounter ahead. As much as raids/dungeons let Bungie push the boundary of what players can do, too often they'll just blow their load in a boss encounter and have its mechanics completely different from a future encounter, connecting the encounters with a "jump puzzle" of empty space that doesn't prepare them for what's to come. Dungeons are better at this "teach during traversal" thing than raids are, but it's not perfect. But regardless, the primary point is that Bungie doesn't know how to design encounters in a way that facilitates learning without potential hours of trial and error (as one failure typically means a party wipe). And I don't think that's ever going to change because Bungie puts a ton of their design principle and marketing on the expectation that players are going to watch a content creator, so to them, it doesn't matter if the mechanics take serious end-game raiders an entire day to figure out. So the normal, every-day player gets to suffer as a result.

            • Mate sorry to break it to ya, bungie does NOT care about its players, never did, never will!.. they keep making the content harder, more grinding for the average person who doesn't have hundreds of hours to play.. it's become a real joke of game. The solo experience is the worst, on top of that.. nerfs after nerfs.. Best not to stress and let them sink their own ship as people are just leaving...

                • The game has become too difficult and complex. Tomorrow begins Bungie's last chance. If they don't reduce the difficulty, then they might as well assume a lot less players will buy Frontiers. As for Spoils of Conquest, you can get 15 easily every week by going into Vow. You have to shoot only 1 enemy at the beginning of the raid. Then use your sparrow to move ahead and shoot the 3 objects. You will die between shooting each object, but it doesn't matter. Keep going and collect the Spoils from the chest. Then leave, change characters, and do it again for another 5 Spoils. Each run will take less than 10 minutes.

                  • Let’s all be real here this community is the problem, if I want to play a game is anyone going to stop me from installing it and playing it? Should I not get the same opportunities as everyone else that installs and plays this game? These opportunities I speak of have been slowly taken away from us. I can’t complete any high tier game modes. I can’t find others that want to run me through and show me the ropes. I’m kinda bound by my solo expertise and very low ranged matchmaking activities. Sure I don’t have to play but I started at the start where I was able to do raids within 30 minutes whilst carrying dead weight and I did it very well but as the game progressed so did the difficulty and not slightly I’m talking substantially. This game is dead because the community killed it and no one will admit that we all blame bungie for it

                    • That's actually a spot-on description of a TON of D2 players. And your sentiments are representative of the overwhelming majority of players (but perhaps not all the humble braggarts on this forum). Bungie actually said their average player age is too high and they'd like to shift it lower. You know, shift toward people who don't have disposable income to spend on season passes and upgraded event cards and indiscriminately squander on overpriced Eververse crap. Brilliant! And to we aging mortals, Bungie's only advice is "Git gud; play what you want, how you want, as long as you're using the specific builds and loadouts required for an increasing amount of content and/or demanded by smug lfg hosts (and don't dare think you can beat the system by over leveling, but please continue grinding for hours and hours and spending money every day anyway); and the punishments for solo players will continue until you're forced to watch a million YouTube videos and locate and buddy up with the two remaining non-toxic players or just go away for good because we'd rather stubbornly go broke than concede D2 isn't purely the MMO we demand it to be."

                      • Good post. I believe a big part of the problem is this. Older players didn’t grow up with technology at our fingertips. Younger players have never known a world without the internet, phones, or computers. So for us older players we don’t want to sit there and watch someone else play the game, we want to play the damn game. When my son was a little guy, he would sit there and watch other people play games and I could just never figure that out. I believe a lot of people (including myself) struggle with some content simply because we don’t want to have to worry about precise builds and weapons. We grew up in a very different gaming world. There’s nothing in Destiny I can’t do. But I just don’t care to have to do research and watch videos to be “Godly” and adhere to a KWTD attitude that breeds elitist. With what time have in my day I just want to play the game and shoot aliens in the face. Not have a certain build to deal with the endless ads and no cover. Just my 2 cents about a very large topic.

To the people giving him tips and telling him to watch videos and whatnot: That is absolutely not the issue. I’m not as old as he but I definitely understand the struggle. And I have actually completed raid seals. For some people, it just comes easier and more naturally than for others. For me, it took about 20 runs to learn all the roles in all the encounters in a raid properly. And the pain I had to endure throughout those runs resembles very much what OP describes. A lot of people are awful at explaining stuff too. I sat by and listened to Sherpas explaining raids that I knew to new players and I thought “Ok, I know the raid and even I find that confusing”. And the openness and tolerance towards people wanting to learn takes a very quick turn when they don’t get it after the first two attempts. It’s a bad experience. And OP is part of the BY FAR largest group of this community. Unfortunately, the difficultly is dictated by streamers who want to make money with tutorials. So it has gotten to a point where you cannot play the game without using YouTube. I hope you all realise that YouTube is not a part of this game. Nor is sitting through half an hour of build crafting explanations before you can even join a post. This game disregards most of its players and then they wonder why the numbers are down.

                          • I've played Destiny since D1, actually since D1 alpha and have always wanted MORE options for players like you ( and myself too), more ways to get into raids, easier difficulty options, teachable raids, etc etc and since Final Shape I have been coming back to Forums and i have seen more and more posts just like yours. You are not alone, I think the majority of player base is like you, I wish Bungie would wake up and see that and make some changes and make ways to better help players like you and make more of the game for us players. I too am a mostly solo and casual Destiny player, got lucky with D1 friends and raids (but most have all now quit the game) and have 3 solid friends now to do the dungeons but we never can do raids and have had miserable experiences everytime we attempt them. (one night we tried pantheon the raid rotation boss thing on a whim, yeah that was brutal we never beat 1st boss and all of us used to play D1 and had beat that boss Golgoroth a bunch back then, but I guess we are all and suck now, anyway). Sadly I don't think any Bungie employees come here and read this feedback and IF they do they have no power to make needed changes. Sadly my advice is "you do you" either you still find things in game you enjoy or try other games, I moved a majority of my gaming time since final shape to other games, games that respect solo players. Maybe Destiny Rising mobile game will be far better for us solo players.

                          • Good post! I'm 50+ and a solo player. I don't have much time to sit down and play in the weeks, so I cannot bother with LFG, do dungeons or raids. Everything in the game is so time-consuming, and if you quit in the middle because you have to go, you have to start all over again, and because of that I play less and less Destiny 2. It is simply not engaging and worth the time, because for people like me, there is little to no feeling of advancement in the game.

                            • OP: That was a very open and brave post! 👍 FWIW: First of all, you are a Guardian…a Customer who has every right to play any and every aspect of the game that is open to you, according to your purchase history. Same as every other player. You are NOT a ‘nobody’…👈 Secondly, you describe (yourself as) a typical ‘Casual’ player…ie, the greater majority of Destiny’s player base. 🤔 No clan…limited or zero buds to play with…short / intermittent availability to play due to work and other IRL commitments, etc.; and a general lack of ‘in game’ awareness - especially what’s called ‘End Game’ activities, eg, Raids / Dungeons…GMs (Grand Master strikes)…and probably Trials (PvP ), too. Don’t worry, there’s more like you than not! 👈👈 Some suggestions: 1. YouTube / Google - has a gazillion recommendations on everything and anything Destiny related. For example, do a search on ‘checkpoint bots’…watch a few vids and find a content creator that you like the sound of, and explore the channel for other helpful Noob / New Lights (NLs / beginners) stuff…and go from there. We’ve all got our own list of preferred CCs…if you want some suggestions - send me a private message (PM)…that way, blushes can be spared…and it avoids any potential issues. 2. Find a ‘friendly’ and active Clan that suits both parties. Sounds simple. It ain’t. 😵‍💫 It’s a rocky road but one that will eventually get you what you’re looking for…eg, some buds to play with, or engage with Endgame activities…trial and errors notwithstanding. 3. Spoils of Conquest can be easy to get as a solo player…either PM me or see YouTube / Google for more info. Finally, there are many great Guardians out there who are willing and able to help…some appear in this thread. Don’t be afraid to reach out! 👌 Caveat:This old tortoise generally pootles about doing ‘vanilla’ stuff most days…but I don’t do raids / dungeons - not since the great Sunset debacle. But, hey, that’s me! 😉 That is all. Chin up! 👍 Ease Springs! 🫡 MDGA

                                • Fun is subjective. There are a lot of people that like to jump into an activity blind, learn it through trials and tribulations, and conquer said activity. There are people that don’t like challenges, like mild challenges, and like difficult challenges. Destiny has content that caters to all of the above. The problem is that people don’t understand, or can’t accept, that everything is not for them. And because they can’t accept it, they look for something to point their finger at. Would you try and drive a manual car without zero knowledge, then blame the manufacturer because the experience wasn’t to your liking? Most people would either stick to automatics or learn to drive a manual vehicle. Same with Destiny. There is content that is difficult, complicated, whatever you want to call it; if you are unable to do the activity just accept it and play the content you are able to. Otherwise, do your due diligence; invest some time getting good gear (there are tons of ways for solo players to get good gear) and watching tutorials regarding dungeons and/or raids (there are even videos that rank content from easier to hardest). Then look for LFG posts for said content (I see a bunch of teaching posts and non KWTD posts) and let them know you’ve never done the encounter but at least you are knowledgeable about the mechanics. Eventually you will get better and better at end game content. Or just be the type of person that wants everything handed to them, and complains and points fingers when things are not handed to them.

That feeling is a big part of why I don’t raid/do dungeons in D2. I’ve accepted that I won’t get access to their rewards, for me this is preferable to the alternative.

                                    • To be honest, based solely on what you've typed here, you joined a group for an activity you were unprepared for, couldn't communicate through little fault of your own but still, and then asked to be kicked when you weren't keeping up, even though they didn't voice frustration at all. Your attitude/expectations were the problem. It was your first raid, or at least you were going in with no completion or idea what to do. Of course you were not going to do well, especially in comparison to people who knew what they were doing. Ya can't go into END GAME content being the type of player you are and expect immediate success, or even to keep up with a team of ball-knowers. It's not built for that at all. Don't give up on raiding. It's the best content in the game IMO, but you have to understand you are starting at the bottom. You have a lot to learn. It will all get MUCH easier if you do actually learn it. There is nothing wrong at being bad at something you haven't tried often, if at all. The only way to improve is to play, especially with patient people who seemingly had no issue with you learning.

                                    • My GM crew and I aren’t spring chickens. We would be glad to help through some dungeons and such. Clan has kind of fallen off (we haven’t run Salvation Edge past the first encounter) but we’ve run stuff before and are patient jokers. Hit us up if you have some time. Most are on Xbox but some pc and ps folks too.

Then perhaps the endgame point isn't for you. As for spoils. Is the old faithful Templar Boss in VoG not farmable anymore?
I'm nobody.
You're somebody, and that means something. If you ever want to step into a dungeon or a raid and have some fun, just ping me. I got your back. And if not, that's 100% okay too. But don't trivialize your existence...especially over a video game. Eyes up Guardian.
