The explanation bungie gave in there twid.
There skill measures are now not contribute to objectives and they want to changes this. This all contributes to there bell curve measurements so they can more effectively reflect a players skill. There glicko system now doesn’t count for object within a game mode.
In normal terms this only means they there skill system is not sufficient for the game modes they have in place and they want adjust there parameters so they can place more emphasis on fair mm. Aka more sbmm. They want to be able to predict better the outcome who wins a match within there lobby balance.
It is well known that company’s are looking more and more towards not skill base mm but emotional base matchmaking. This is a factor to keep players longer engaged and play there game.
Bungie has stated previously that there mm is about 88% correct on predicting what the out come of a game will be a win or a lose. The new system in place will make this more accurate or as they call it : a better reflection of skill. I encourage everybody to read true the words and see what there trying to achieve and it’s quite simply better prediction towards a outcome of a match, that they want there game to reflect. And yess this will only benefit them if the “player” engagement time is extended.
A game like destiny has no benefit from
Showing players there true skill within there game it only benefits from revenue and player engagement time. And for revenue you need player engagement time. There speech makes it sound like there trying to improve you’re experience but actually there trying to proactively make sure you stick to destiny.
Competitive
Another little statement they made “we have systems in place” to prevent you from circumventing there mm parameters like tanking you’re skill or trying to effect there mm in competitive.
What there telling here is that the playerbase here will not be able to play with friends unless the significant friend is 50/100 skill points away from there own skill rating. This in a game with 2000 points to be distribute over player skill. Because they want to predict mm outcome more correctly. For this they need to add measurements so there number can go from a 88% correct to a higher number. In order to do this “the outlier protection” needs to be significantly better. And because higher skilled ppl will always be the benchmark for mm playing with lower skilled friends will only become worse. It’s not about the experience it’s about being able to predict the outcome. And when the mm go’s of a low skilled friend and a high skilled friend against two higher skilled players the out come can more precisely predicted then when the high skilled friend plays with a lower skilled friend against two mid skilled players. This is why playing with friends will now more then ever be disadvantage. Because bungie’s goal is player engagement and better predictability contributes to player revenue.
Just to be clear they have stated that they are adding measurements towards there skill rating not looking at there initial or reworking there skill rating. A lot of players on the community have the complaint they feel there being mismatch because they mm in place is not reflected of there true skill. Its sounds that bungie is look at this, but that’s not what they are saying so for those who hope for a better change to reflect there in game preference towards better mm don’t get you’re hopes up. There new addition to mm is there to better predict mm outcome not te put you into better matches. There is a huge difference between trying to improve player experience and trying to improve player outcome. I’ll give a example below:
When humans experience that the possibility to become anything they want it’s a free and safe society we call this “opportunity of choices”, aka do I want to improve and become better at destiny or do I want to play with friends and have fun.
When humans experience that there in a controlled environment because the predictions need to be more accurate to reach the desired goal it’s called a “oppertunity of outcome”. It sounds like destiny player base is starving for “opportunity of choices” and this explanation in the twid definitely describes “opportunity of outcome”
So don’t be fooled when the new season hits and your still the hamster on a wheel and not in controle of you’re game outcome it’s all designed to make you feel just good enough to keep playing.
Ps; I know my English isn’t the best I’m trying to explain stuff in the 3e language that I speak. For those who have issue pls msg me in person I’ll try to elaborate on stuff. Thx for reading.

1 Replyi would just be happy if gold and below fight each other.. platinum matchmake with other plat or adepts. Adepts fight all three plat, adept, ascendants.. while top is ascendent and adept only.. but preference was typically same rank only. If you quit 3 matches in a week you only go against ascendence after 72 hour lock out for a week. :)

I think I understand you perfectly. You fear that your matches will be tougher because they are going to weigh you and your buddy fairly. You fear that you are on the right side of the bell curve and that you enjoy stomping on everything left of you and you wont get to do that as much. You will have tougher games. With this fear you are then putting together a defense in that they are doing this to extend engagement and games because that's their background motivation.. but incidentally we can see that fairer games (less mercies / lopsided-ness) will cause longer actual games and more engagement potentially because of that. You say the matches won't be balanced matches just balanced W/L (outcome) but you don't talk at all about balancing a match... so give another option other than weighing players and stacks better? Give a better choice that allows the left side of the curve to get better and I might find some better motive to your... motivation. I like the fancy words, opportunity of choices and opportunity of outcomes. I think you are intelligent and probably a good player. And you will have to get gudder. :) -
So I'll still be 1v1 against the world. Great... At least special is banned for blues.

Edited by SCRFY N3RF HRDR: 2/2/2025 10:23:07 PMHonestly not a bad read, opportunity of choices rings a lot of bells. They’ve N3RF’ed everything I use in my favorite build, why? Only a few people know🗿

2 RepliesWhere did it say dodge is getting another increase? I must of missed that.

4 RepliesRemember that Bungie's goal is to be UNABLE to predict match outcomes. How well they are able to do this is based on how well their "skill" parameter works with their "match prediction" formulas. In fact, making game outcomes unpredictable is the purpose of Lobby Balancing. Has Bungie ever stated how SBMM works when you're in a fireteam? Does it go off and average "skill" or the player with the highest "skill" or something else?
