Low player pop in PvP requires CBMM

PvP is already in a messy state and the player population is getting lower and lower. I’m simply advocating for Bungie to roll-back SBMM in favor of quickly finding good connection games while the player population is so small at the moment. It’s difficult to play against laggy Larries 24/7 in this ability dominated meta. Couple that with pulses burst registration - if you move behind cover, the poor network connections make it difficult to react properly. Or are you guys fine with how things are?

  • I played iron banner and 8/10 matches had at least one dude lagging like crazy and killing me simply because they’d lag away from my bullets while still doing damage.

  • β, Five very weak grenades, and one super per match isn't "an ability dominated" meta. Matching already gives weight to connection. Stay of the soy, Son. Your family loves you.

    • PVP is fine. The biggest issue is loot. Most players can’t function in Trials to earn base loot. Failing to earn Adept rolls inspires more grief. The Comp rewards are ordinary and the emblem is harder to earn than the Lighthouse. Increase casual rewards.

      • Has been CBMM for ages now, that's why it's in the shambles it is. All the mid-low tier players left because it was only fun for the top players. Now your stuck with a low population so it sucks for everyone. This is what you wanted, stop complaining.

          • It’s basically been nothing but outlier protection for over a year I think. Like top 20 is had separated from bottom 20 or something like that.

            • I have only started playing PvP over recent seasons and it does get tiring finishing the game with a mercy regardless of which side of this you end up on. Very rarely do i play a game thats seperated by 20 - 30 points. I can see why so many players have just abandoned the mode. Its a shame because im sure if the pop was higher we might see more balanced games using SBMM. I dont mind playing the odd game where we get trounced... i dont take it too seriously but the constant yo yo is vetting really tiring

            • Nar mm is fine in pvp, every iron banner match Ive had with my clan or solo have been fine ,add cbmm into the mix watch the playlist completely die and be worse than what it is now since 99% of the community hate cbmm and the main issue atm is player count all round but it's the holidays and people are just playing other games

              • CBMM caters to the top tier. SBMM means lower tier people like me have a chance to enjoy a match once in a while. A balanced approach would make everyone a little happy which may increase the PVP pool. Catering strictly to the top tier with CBMM is what started the downturn in the first place.

                  Been saying this for years. But bungie caters to the 💩 player population in an effort to retain them and they havnt realized it does t work. Literally EVERY SINGLE TIME, Bungie has gone from cbmm to sbmm they have been forced to revert back to cbmm because populations simply die out.

                    Actually it requires no matchmaking filters at all , anyone can get matched with anyone, regardless of skill, connection or region

                    • You are absolutely correct. I shouldn’t be playing against other players 2-3K miles away in a game mode that supposedly prefers connection. Outlier protection does literally nothing to protect players and only leads to more blowouts

                    • I think bungie needed to handle the onboarding experience years ago, and any conversation on which is best is mute without the players to reasonably sustain either.

                        As someone majoring in computer science with a concentration in game design, I can confidently say this claim cannot be considered without data to back it up. In game design, we use player data to find the evidence behind things such as this and I am more than sure Bungie has the appropriate data that suggests this is the best option to please the most people. Again, you cannot please everyone. I could be wrong on some of the following details so feel free to correct me other GDD majors. Outlier protection matchmaking is NOT sbmm, if you were to compare, on average you would not notice a difference. Most of the game modes are open skill (CBMM) except for Trials rules and Comp as well as Control/IB depending on the week. Control and IB only have outlier-protected matchmaking. Comp is rank-based matchmaking. And Trials is an open skill until you have a flawed card. SBMM doesn't exist in the current version of D2. Bungie has been very open to how this all works in previous TWIDs so I will refer you to that. Hope this helps! -Des

                          Exactly , it's unplayable in current state. SBMM = Much more lag, latency and frame loss then CBMM. (Why would you prefer this over a better quality matches, in the first place?) Also, almost every match is being called now. CBMM = At least a little bit more fair matches, because less lag, latency and frame loss. At least my bullets mostly do normal damage with CBMM. Now (SBMM) you leave a bad match and you get in another bad match, all over again. With CBMM you at least have a chance to join a better playable match, next.

                        • Tis such a horrid reality, but it just might be reality nonetheless. And one of the other unfortunate things is that even the sbmm serving form of cbmm probably won't work, now that PvP has once again been driven to the brink. All pvp players wanted was to play to the brinks of their imaginations. And I guess we just had to take the long road to get here I'm glad everyone took the journey together and we've all learned [i]and[/i] taught. This will be great we just have to get them to promise no more shenanigans.

Being pooled with better player maybe tough, but at least it's not frustrating like being pooled with player that teleport, kill you in one shot behind cover, move twice as fast... I can live with Graviton and other pulses as long as they fix the more structural issues like lag and cheating.
