revenant act 1 is embarrassingly bad

first off, credit where credit's due, the onslaught revamp is good stuff and the ui changes are legitimately helpful and then there's tonics. gonna keep it simple: there are too many steps between "i want to make a tonic" and "i have a tonic that's ready to use". there also seems to be no in-game indication that "create five of the same green tonic in one go" is how you unlock blue tonics and gain access to fieldwork speaking of fieldwork, this is quite possibly the single laziest addition to d2 i've seen in a very long time. i'm pretty sure the voicelines at the end of the major fieldwork are glitched, because one of my fireteam members couldn't hear them at the end of the first one we did while i and our third could, and then we did another one as a duo later and neither of us heard the dialogue at the end of that one and i can't believe y'all thought "kill 15 enemies in 2 minutes" was worth gating like this. scratch that. i can't believe y'all thought this was content worthy of implementing in d2 in the first place. y'all put more effort into fishing, for goodness sake this next bit features what can kind of sort of count as spoilers in a world where it's considered an actual story, so be fairly warned
so eramis chooses to come to space jail instead of continuing her anti-human adventures, because fikrul keeps yeeting her forces and crow asked nicely. cool. decent enough so far. only problem is that in the very next scene, crow's got a gun pointed at her. like bro she already put the space handcuffs on willingly. chill out a bit and then fikrul just shows up out of nowhere, yeets all the fallen on the helm (whom we're supposed to believe is basically the entire crew), calls crow his daddy, and leaves without elaborating further. i get that diversity is supposed to be our strength but this really wasn't good planning on the vanguard's part. never mind that if this guy is supposed to be strong and all-knowing enough to just show up in the enemy's base of field operations and "borrow" every fallen in the immediate vicinity... how has he NOT driven them into extinction already? heck, what's stopping him from magically appearing in the last city and doing the same thing? so we're barely two cinematics into this story and my suspension of disbelief is already shot, and then failsafe drops a witty line and we're... on earth. we were JUST ON EUROPA. HOW DID WE GET TO EARTH.
my friends' comments said it all. "i feel like there were three or four cinematics here that just never got made" "this is your game on layoffs" "so when does the story start making sense" if you look at the descriptions of all the tonic ingredients, they'll spoil the act 2 and 3 activities for you, and there's a non-zero chance those are gonna be some good stuff too. i'm just impressed that they managed to write a worse story than the one they had for last season, and put all the effort into this convoluted mess of a tonic system instead of actual content not named onslaught.

  • D2 will experience a faster decline in player activity than at the end of Act III in the previous episode. Tonics are a convoluted mess. Bungie really must get rid of the developers that come up with ridiculously complex steps, mechanics, and puzzles. Onslaught becomes dull after a few runs. We already played enough of it in the past. No weapon crafting == major mistake. What's left? A dungeon that few will want to play. Good luck with that boring, crap activity.

    • The story feels a bit cheesy, like the ones for Cayde being killed off. Conversation between Crow and Filrul... kinda weird.

Hmm, yeah, I've got a feeling the only reason why the acts are being released at once is due to not having enough content to split across 3 weeks. This might be due to the dungeon being part of episode 2, and not part of the weekly acts... in which case content might be comparable. Edit: they even slowed down Fikrul's dialogue to stretch the content further!! Seriously Fikrul, cut to the chase!! Also,
why the -blam!- does crow teleport away when the fighting starts... dude, why!! At least use a golden gun first. I know exactly why the game wants that to happen, but could you let the story know please!!
• The story is so bad. They’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel for narrative progression at this point.

also i forgot to mention this in the op but they should've laid off whoever decided increasing the power cap mid-year was a good idea the pinnacle grind is by far the worst part of the [pve side of the] game to me and i want it to go away forever

          • Yup, as much as I have had a great time playing Destiny over the years I’m struggling to get back into it. Want to do the new Dungeon but motivation is lacking on the power grind.

          • Yeah it's pretty sad. They managed to add something with the tonics that no one is invested in at all. I'm not going to say that I'll stop playing altogether but the tonics will be something I potentially make when I happen to have the materials from just doing other things - and not the main content per se, which usually would be expected with a new chapter. Hell, even a IB or Solstice event feels more engaging.

I liked it. After 2 days of playing, it made me close the game and finally start RDR2 Edit: RDR2 is almost as boring as the season

                • They took a removed Gambit map and put it into Onslaught instead of putting it back in Gambit which is severely lacking in maps. Just remove Gambit already. Especially if you would rather move content from it to something else that won't even be around.

                  • I knew it would be bad when there was no mention of what revenant was actually going to be in the last live stream! It's awful to charge us money for new onslaught maps that should have been just regular maps added to the free side of the game, what's next are they going to make a season about the crucible and charge us real money to participate? I demand a refund bungie this is embarrassing at the least!

                  • Agreed on Field works being absolutely terrible and the tonic system being tedious. I will disagree however on Onslaught update being good. The activity just doesn't feel fun to me even when they released it in Into the Light. Defenses are far too expensive to buy or upgrade along with you getting far too little scrap even if the objective survives. Then there is the factor of the cabal turrets you can buy and upgrade. I found out they literally cannot kill. I have watched one dps a dreg and he stayed at 1 health or just ignored the damage and healed to full after a near full burst from the thing. To top it off, last season was so bad one of my friends already left. Yesterday, my other friend left without even playing (he has blamed me in the past for making him not enjoy the game anymore despite Bungie being the ones who make the stupid thing and he probably does still) so I am stuck here on my own. Thanks Bungie, you ruined one of my favorite games. Most likely just so Pete could skip out on paying to improve the game he is getting his money from and instead buy another stupid car.

They basically cut out all the timegating and filler steps that make you play onslaught so the quest is done in 14 steps as apposed to something like 30-40. I think the most egregious thing is those fieldwork quests that don't even have dialogue and they are supposed to be comparable to the Echoes specimen quests which actually have dialogue and quite a few steps to each of them that means you aren't done in like 1 minute. Echoes specimen quests also had some items or creatures you could put on display in the HELM but these fieldwork quests just put a jar on a shelf amongst a million other jars lol.

                  • Reminder that you all should've waited a week or two before purchasing this product instead of blindly pre-ordering all the slop Bungie puts in your trough. One reason Bungie puts out slop is because they know they don't have to try. If you actually acted like smart consumers instead of addicts, they'd have to give a damn and might make improvements.

It's becoming clear that they seriously mailed it in with this update. This became obvious when one of the "field research" quests was to go to Europa and kill 15 bottom tier enemies, which took about 5 seconds. Then the mission was over but for some reason they gave you approx. 2 minutes of standing around time in an area where there was nothing to do and if you tried to leave you would go out of bounds and die. Feels like they slopped that "mission" together in about 5 minutes and threw it in to provide filler.

They even had the nerve to add a "taste test" step to the Tonic! Lol Why? Seriously, why? It took me longer to reinstall the game, than it did to finish Act 1!

HOW DID WE GET TO EARTH.

Just going over the story stuff, because that's the bit I've actually loved with this first Act, especially compared to last Episode.
Eramis is still a Stasis wielder and those cuffs aren't actually too much of a deterrent to those abilities. It's not until she's in her cell that she's actually suppressed with Cabal tech from Witch Queen. She's still a threat on the H.E.L.M. The Eliksni Fikrul converts aren't the crew of the H.E.L.M., they're the crew of the Salvation Ketch we were supposed to be escorting to the City. It's why the ship crashes into us immediately after FIkrul leaves. Before we arrived on Europa to respond to the House of Salvation distress call for evacuation we had no idea that Fikrul was converting living Eliksni into Scorn, let alone that he had an Echo. We were underprepared for this operation precisely because of this lack of information. Fikrul believes he's the Kell of Kells, an old Eliksni prophecy from the House of Rain that's said to unite all Eliksni under one Banner. He's simply choosing to avoid the City while he hunts down other stragglers throughout the system, likely because he doesn't want to risk opening himself up to an army of Guardians until he's amassed an army to take them on. He can take his time, because he's the chosen one. I agree it's kind of annoying that they just skipped over that the H.E.L.M. got salvaged and brought to Earth, but that is explained by Eido in the immediate aftermath. We were rescued and the command module of the ship brought to Earth so that we could still access Echoes cont- I mean so Failsafe wouldn't be left behind.
