Banes sound way more annoying then "engaging"

I recently read Bungies post about the new combatant modifiers they plan to add to end game activities. I can't say I was particularly excited given how activity modified and penalties have generally been a source of frustration and annoyance for the community. To quick list an example in Season of the Wish we had "The Coil" which implemented several modified from the Master difficulty pool. One of these modifiers was Togetherness. For those unfamiliar with this modifier you need to stand within 7 feet of a nearby ally to be able to regenerate health normally. If you are not near allies when your HP regen delay finishes you regen HP at an extremely slow rate. This ended up being largely hated by both solo players and groups alone. So much so it got to the point were if the modifier was present players would not partake in the activity until it hard rotated out for another. So not we get to Banes which seem very akin to Mayhem Modifiers from Borderlands 3. To sum things up BL3 spend ages trying to balance this mode were enemies were way harder and there was all this extra stuff like enemies chain lightning to nearby players sucking shields or dead skulls that one shot you would spawn from dead enemies. Players got random modifiers so you would need to re roll for potently hours to get a combination you felt comfortable taking on. After that you pretty much just played the game like that. Eventually the Devs caved and gave players a mode that kept enemies difficulty up BUT removed all the random modifiers. Now when you see anyone playing Borderlands 3 they are playing on this mode in the end game. No one touches the modifiers, if they do there an extremly nich player and only playing with a handful of specific modifiers out of the large pool. While the Destiny community is largely a different camp of players then the majority of Borderlands players there is a good amount of cross over due to the similarities between these games. I also believe there is some wisdom here that is very applicable to Destiny. Players don't just want random extra modifiers to add "replay value" to activities. What we like is feeling free enough to try different builds, different set ups and different characters to add more variety to our gameplay. Modifiers RESTRICT the types of loadouts and builds we can use in a given activity or difficulty. If you make it so enemies spew out fire balls randomly from there back and something like area denial grenades or rocket assisted side arms are the best for dealing with them then guess what everyone is going to use to deal with them. In reality the boarder spectrum just doesn't even want to haft to replay the exotic mission 5 times or do a strikes 20+ times to get what they are looking for. The players who want to re repeat these activities are those who have an over abundance of time on there hands to play video games (AKA content creators) These individuals do NOT make up your broader audience. Catering to the feedback that things should take longer to grind or harder generally will hurt your game as it will be come less accessible for people who have less time to play or are trying to break in to end game activities. While I have given up on the idea that this game will ever be as player friendly as games like WoW or be grind light I do hope Bungie can gradually realize that doing things like Banes are largely a waste of time and resources given they will not accomplish the goal of making grinds or repetitive activities more interesting and engaging.

Funny part is the solar one is just the Cabal strike boss on the landtank (solar tracking fireballs) but on any enemies, the nuclear one is just the attack the Broodmother had (and her shade copy could summon void barbs on the ground), the berzerk one we ALREADY HAVE TOO 😂 it's the mechanic in Kings Fall where killing major Acolytes turns nearby lesser Acolytes into mini ogres and makes them more aggressive. Lightning one is also already in the game. Bungie is just copypasting stuff with a slight alteration to how it is activated and everyone is acting like it's super new lol

        • We’ve had the bane system in Destiny before. It used to be how D2 Nightfalls worked, and I thought it was a pretty good system. Only issue at the time was that it was tuned to a degree where the only way you could ever earn platinum was to run around with attrition in every run to even have a shot. The way it’s laid out with this version, it doesn’t look too bad. I just hope the loot appropriately matches the difficulty

          • I've started doing a vault clean, and while doing so, realised that all my years of collecting, hoarding, grinding, whatever, has been a waste of time. Maybe it's me, but in seasons gone by, new content was highly anticipated. I looked forward to increasing my power level to overcome the new, more difficult enemies. I looked forward to collecting new weapons and armour, and trying out new loadouts. By the end of that season, we would be at a stage where we had completed 99% of everything, got all the loot, and had started to prepare for the next season/dlc. This has sadly evolved into a game where the majority of the loot is useless, as we are being pushed into using a certain build and a handful of meta weapons to beat modified enemies and overcome frustrating mechanics, and where power level has no impact. A game in which there is no need to hit max level, cos we're always underpowered. All this to please a minority who complained that it wasn't hard enough. Has a game got to be infuriating to be enjoyed? For me, it has gone from a game which I couldn't stop playing, a game that that made me want to grind and complete everything, to a game where I can't be bothered to log in half the time. Out of all the reskinned weapons, only a few are any good, and they're usually locked behind dungeons, raids or trials, so basically aimed at the top players or well established clans. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I'd rather put in a couple of thousand hours on a game I can enjoy at a leisurely pace, than playing something that gets me frustrated trying to get loot that is out of reach anyway.

It will probably be the same as "Pathfinder". Something added to the game to make it "look" like something worthwhile was added to the game. And they will address it after every failure, to make themselves look like saviours.

If you look at their decisions they have made over the last couple of years, 90% of their decisions have been to work against the gamer, not improve the gamers experience. Someone even tried to pass off that "you get to chose" as if that is a good things knowing this business's track record of focusing on making things more miserable for the gamer.

                    • This is the inevitable outcome to content that is fundamentally flawed and unfun to run multiple times, instituted by a development team that has historically never respected player time. The trick to get people playing old content a lot is to make said content fun. Instead, Bungie opted for barebones "combat arenas" chained together by empty hallways. Instead of putting in the work in the beginning to make the content stand on its own merits, they adopted a "we'll tune it later" approach which almost never goes well. Time spent playing said content is going to go up by virtue of a design meant to slow player progress, so Bungie will likely see it as a success. Negatives are always spun into positives with their Olympic-level mental gymnastics.

                    • Borderlands modifiers for mayhem mode are literally non-issues in that game and anyone who struggles is deliberately putting themselves at a disadvantage by building their character poorly (the game literally spits out multiple legendaries per boss and everything is easy to do in BL3) WoW is definitely not player friendly, monthly subscriptions just to play past a certain level, the ability to buy your way to the top, pay to win, so much screen clutter most players use 3 moniters just so they can keep track of everything. If you think WoW is player friendly then you have nothing to complain about when it comes to Destiny. You have freedom to use what you want just dont expect to always succeed when you deliberately use trash gear. People will always try to find the most optimal way of doing things so it takes less time which then gives the more time to spend elsewhere. All youre complaint is, is you crying that youre bad at the game and that you dont know what youre doing.

                      • if by that time there are still people left in the game who want to try this, I don't believe in Bungo anymore, I was disappointed with the release of Light Fall and I didn't really like Final Shape, I don't understand why everyone praises it so much... Witness just doesn't look like what they made him out to be in the game... I lasted 2 weeks and then I left the game... I don't even expect new changes because they are useless and they want to keep their streamers and the 1% of players who like to play 10 hours a day... I'm only waiting for the dungeon! It looks like a long, painful death and not a return of D2 to what it once was...

                      • I read that post and nothing there is making me want to keep playing this game past what I have already paid for, and right now I cant really be bothered doing that. Banes are just yet more of the same tinkering with mechanics, while the core activities rot away, that we have seen for years. Banes wont change anything, they will just be the next tedious thing in the game. Champions don't make me feel engaged with the activity, they just limit what I can use because I have to deal with them. Banes are just the next nothing burger.

I think about it in 2 different ways: 1. Bungie needs to focus the limited resources on creating the stuff to do rather than how to do it. The places.. the action and adventure that is what I thought D2 was when I was getting into it. 2. I tried to focus on my current favorite activity, Onslaught.. what if there were bane waves or something in there.. something that changed up the gameplay.. that is interesting as a 2ndary thing because the main thing that would make Onslaught 2.0.. is more maps, new weapons/rewards, cabal/scorn/vex..etc added << THIS FIRST this is the stuff to do.. not how to do it. I don't know how to get these Bungie guys to pay attention on the right stuff... I mean don't you agree... stop messing with the how to do it... we need the stuff to do.. we need it maintained, updated and Fresh...

                            • Leave aside a new destination, a handful of campaign missions, new raid, new strike, a new dungeon and exotic mission, and some form of new power (with prismatic being the laziest ever) is the standard for $120 price tag. Knowing that players will generally need to own previous packages to acquire most new rewards.
