Why quitting is as poisonous to PvP as cheating

Just like cheating, quitting is a selfish action that negatively impacts other players. All of us may need to quit the occasional match for an unexpected reason, but it should be a rare occurrence and definitely not routine. Unfortunately, some players regularly use it as a way to avoid difficult matches and manipulate their stats. Quitting is also seen by some as an acceptable way to give feedback to Bungie. The problem is it’s indistinguishable from “I’ll keep playing, but only if I’m doing well”. If you’re happy to play when the lag, or team balancing is in your favour, you should be able to suck it up when those things are reversed. Here’s the crux of the issue: some gamers expect a multiplayer experience to be tailored towards their individual experience. This is why EOMM (Engagement Optimised Matchmaking) exists — to spoon feed the players who (just like cheaters) feel no responsibility to the communal experience and treat multiplayer as if it’s single player. I don’t know if EOMM exists in Destiny, but the more acceptable it becomes to quit, the more likely it is that developers will see it as a legitimate way to keep players engaged. If you care about PvP (real PvP), I hope you view habitual quitting to be as equally poisonous as cheating.

 • That’s why I simply avoid Crucible like it’s got rabies. I can’t contribute to the matchmaking issues if I don’t contribute to the playlist in any way. I’m doing MY part!
