Why quitting is as poisonous to PvP as cheating

Just like cheating, quitting is a selfish action that negatively impacts other players. All of us may need to quit the occasional match for an unexpected reason, but it should be a rare occurrence and definitely not routine. Unfortunately, some players regularly use it as a way to avoid difficult matches and manipulate their stats. Quitting is also seen by some as an acceptable way to give feedback to Bungie. The problem is it’s indistinguishable from “I’ll keep playing, but only if I’m doing well”. If you’re happy to play when the lag, or team balancing is in your favour, you should be able to suck it up when those things are reversed. Here’s the crux of the issue: some gamers expect a multiplayer experience to be tailored towards their individual experience. This is why EOMM (Engagement Optimised Matchmaking) exists — to spoon feed the players who (just like cheaters) feel no responsibility to the communal experience and treat multiplayer as if it’s single player. I don’t know if EOMM exists in Destiny, but the more acceptable it becomes to quit, the more likely it is that developers will see it as a legitimate way to keep players engaged. If you care about PvP (real PvP), I hope you view habitual quitting to be as equally poisonous as cheating.

  • I don’t quit unless the door bell rings or something but what I have recently started doing is when playing control, as we run to the first capture point… If no-one else bothers to capture it I’ve stopped doing it. Too many games I stand on a zone by myself for what seems like forever…only to get shot by the other team. So many matches lost because folks won’t even capture the first zone.

    • Imagine caring about stats in a game that doesn't have SBMM. I focus on objectives and plays in games over K/D and this game is even worse for me bc of the predetermined outcome. I just look bad on both counts.

      • I was going to put something else down, on the likes of people just don’t care most of the time and honesty will not bat an eye But I’ll raise you this I think I know a way to make people want to stay, honestly make it so winning or losing doesn’t change anything that you get the same rewards, experience and rank up points cause I’m pretty sure if they get told “hey at the end of the match your rewards will be the same as the winning team” would boost their reasonings to stay

I know what you are saying comes from a good place.. I think... but I'd like to bring up 2 things.. number 2 being the main point: Thing 1. Obviously there are outliers like.. its just a game and IRL I need to go. BUT.. there is also a difference between.. A. I am PVP-ing but the score sucks.. B. I am NOT PVP-ing.. a total destruction is occuring.. you cannot stay alive.. its so unbalanced. In A >> you are able to enjoy it.. because you are able to "PVP". A quitter in such condition.. yes this is bad. In B >> you are not going to sit there for the whole match I don't care what good-natured empathetic soul you are. Thing 2. It is 2000% Bungie's fault. #1 reason to not be able to PVP.. as in enact tactics/strategy to stay alive, win and have fun (or learn even).. is because of balance.. balance in all things (Weapons, ability, lobby, connection..etc). Obviously there is a skill range.. obviously it takes time to ramp up.. but the PVP player-base is furious because they know it is unbalanced. This has a snowballing affect. Stop blaming the players.. its Bungie's product. Look how long it takes them to respond? They have the absolute minimum of focus on D2. They took the DLC/Seasonal money and paid the exit packages.. and now care so little about D2... and you are trying to fix the community? Bungie needs to step-up in a big way and the nostalgic-shill-folk (R) .. need to tell them that too..

“quitting is a selfish action that negatively impacts other players.” So does being bad on a good players team you don’t hear us complaining “All of us may need to quit the occasional match for an unexpected reason, but it should be a rare occurrence and definitely not routine” All of what I said below depends on what you consider routine quitting “Unfortunately, some players regularly use it as a way to avoid difficult matches and manipulate their stats” If you have 2 0.5 teammates and your opp has 2 2kd teammates it is fair play to leave that match you will be 5-0 you have 0 chance of winning and it is a pointless game to play your trash cans we’re going to lose anyway and if anything your helping them if your leaving in the first round by saving there card P.s unless someone is leaving a F ton of games it will barley affect there stats And people use it to avoid impossible matches like the scenario I gave not hard matches “If you’re happy to play when the lag, or team balancing is in your favour, you should be able to suck it up when those things are reversed” How about no that’s a bad take that’s like saying “oh you should be as happy winning a fight as getting knocked out” “I hope you view habitual quitting to be as equally poisonous as cheating” Anyone who thinks this is either an idiot or has never played cheaters in there life

            • I'm thinking eomm is not in destiny. Just based on how many people i see quitting. There's just no way I'd be in those lobbies if there was. It's significantly worse at the higher end of the skill curve. People wanna protect those stats to much. Comp and trials is almost gurenteed to drop atleast one player if end up losing the 1st 2 rounds.

              • I wouldn't call them equal, but quitting is definitely a problem and the amount of people I see whining about quitter penalties is just a bunch of self-reporting for me. Especially when they're whining about QP, where win/loss is ultimately meaningless.

                  • Nah, people are gonna quit if they are not having fun. As they should. Either that or I could start not walking towards people with sweet business. Either way I’m not about to put effort into something I hate. Games are supposed to be fun. I’m not getting paid to play so I’m not gonna treat it like a job.

The game doesn't work well when people are determined to have it work in a way that's too different from the way most people play it.

                        • Quitting negatively affects other players, but saying it is as bad as a cheater is a stretch. I don't play D2 competitively as it's not a competition-level game. Players don't like a map and quit out on disjuction - i don't care; and to be frank support their mini 'boycott' of said map as the dev team notices it and changes are made b/c of it. (or at least depriortiizing unpopular maps is supposed to happen anyways....) I will 100% quit any lobby in which there are too many teleporting laggy players; it's not a fun experience for me and if im playing pvp its for fun - cuz it sure isn't the terrible loot thats there to keep me engaged. If Bungo wanted to improve upon laggy p2p lobbies they could have with a dedicated network overhaul. Hell even at base they could add player ping to the lobby screen so when you think you have great connections etc vs bad connections you can see that in real time - even tack on PVP mode from Space Marines 2 has that basic functionality in their end game screen.
