I feel like the DCV has stunted Destiny 2's growth potential because it removed the early game

4 years after the DCV dropped the perceived outcome has been new and possible returning players are hesitant to join (rejoin) because of the loot and even narrative elements missed that often don't return. For those who do join I hear too often even from players I've invited into the game as new lights that they have no clue what to do or where to go without guidance. Even knowledge of their subclass abilities goes without note, and many have lost interest within that early game stage. Flawed as the Red War era was the actual Red War story did a pretty good job of introducing you to the relevant destinations and offered an immediate purpose to retain the player's attention long enough to act as a hook. Dark Forest Meditation missions also acted as a fantastic introduction to the subclasses which were also part of the Red War story. In essence I feel like maybe downscaling the destinations relevant to Red War might've been more beneficial than the entire removal of them because that offered the best possible introduction to Destiny 2. Also the time limited or "exclusive" loot has become a problem acting as a barrier to entry. Exclusive loot does a great job at hooking veterans, but it actively deters new players from joining the game.

  • Probably damaged alot of people's opinion of returning also, they said much later that they wouldn't be sunsetting anymore and returning players had so much to catchup on and buy that it probably didn't seem worth it

  • Been saying this since DCV began, never remove content. Games like WoW, FFXIV, these MMOs have every main story quest from day 1 up to now in game. Every dungeon raid trial ect, it's in game. Destiny loses its heart and soul with each expansion, every seasonal story just gets gutted, it's content removed to make room for a new expansion and seasons/episodes. This is the main reason why the game is bad. If it were to all remain the game would be a TB in storage easily. Due to these technical limitations is why we will never have everything.

    • If they brought back all the major content we lost, I would feel more comfortable recommending the game to others. Red War was an amazing introduction to D2. They should bring it back alongside CoO, Warmind, and Forsaken. They should also bring back the planetary adventures.

      • Yup. With basically no path for incoming players. The game will just never recoup those who leave

      • That and light level locking is a terrible idea. What's the point of light level grinding if light level grinding doesn't matter? We're all at -5 all the time anyway. That also ruins the feeling of progression, which is tough to overcome for newer players

The DCV is one of those things where I get why they did it, and I don't think its feasible to undo it, but if it were in any way plausible, they really gotta undo it. Hell, even just with people missing out on seasonal content it gets hard to follow the story. Imagine having not been around for major story content like forsaken.

      • There is no such thing as a 'content vault'. Bungie straight up deleted the content. They only call it the 'DCV' because if they admitted to just erasing stuff YOU paid for, they'd have had a WORSE exodus of players since they created Destiny 2. And they still haven't gotten the D1 numbers back (It's also why they'll never make a D3. They don't want to lose the little fanbase, which to be fair is still in millions, just not TENS of millions, they have left). But all that content is GONE. The reason we see them take so long to reprise certain places and models is because they literally have to build it back up from scratch.

Duh. Common knowledge the content vault stunted growth. So many seasoned veterans left and newbies had nobody willing to teach them.

As a returning player it wasnt something I knew about when I returned and I only found out about it later. It wasnt until I really started working on trophies that the "gaps" became obvious. I also kind of wish that they had kept the seasonal characters somewhere, because certain things - things that are still on the trophy pages - are literally impossible to complete. Additionally, LFG is missing so many entries. You literally can't look for players for old legendary campaigns and activities. It's as if they want us to completely forget about the old stuff and just play TFS.

        • DCV ruined a lot with D2. As I said before, they should have done another title before taking crap away, as D2 was plagued with foundational issues from its launch that could never really be rectified.

        • Nothing will ever grow to its full potential without pruning the dead parts to make room for new growth. People are spending too much time looking backward in Destiny.

          • Imagine trying to play Destiny 2 for the first time ever today, having no idea what the games about, what the story is and what it's supposed to mean? You think you'd work it out? Must be like stepping into the Twilight Zone. Fork that.

            • I couldn't tell any of my friends to jump in once they took out all that content. Then they botched the New Light experience and that.. Was a done deal.

            • I get why they did it but at the same time I think they should have just gone with the system where you can install and uninstall campaigns at your leisure. If someone doesn’t mind having a 200+ gb version of the game on their hard drive then just let them.

I think the DCV thing was just all a way of spinning the fact that the game was growing too big for them to handle. Moving over to the new lighting engine was a good point to cut things they needed to in order for the game to be manageable. From what I gather the engine is a complete mess and constantly makes it difficult for them to develop the game.

                • They need to remaster d1 and d2, and combine them. Full story. Nothing vaulted. If it means leaving behind old gen then so be it. It will solve the new player complaint, it will fill in what was missed by other players, and it will bring back the players that have done everything and have reason to sigh on. They don’t want to make a d3. Their plan is to just keep adding to minimal content to d2. This is the only way it’s going to succeed.

When a game gets rid of a good onboarding structure to drive new players away, they don’t intend the game to last forever. If they did, they would have make 3 to keep 2 intact for future players and sales. Like they did with 1. They shifted for a reason. They figured their player base was large and solid enough to ride it out. That’s why they made the dcv, gives them enough room to keep the base game rolling. And look what is coming out soon, a new game to reboot an old franchise. All they need is one cash cow to stay solvent. If Destiny continued to decline, they have an excuse to drop it. I mean ten years in and zero answers, a narratively empty finale dlc and an emphasis of short term content going forward. That’s a method to cop out when revenue finally drops too far.

                  • Now that the seasonal model is winding down, they'll probably be able to focus on a proper introductory experience for new players. And if a lot of new players show up the rest of us will probably get the boot.
