Mark Noseworthy and Luke Smith have left Bungie

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/bungie-layoffs-include-senior-execs-luke-smith-and-mark-noseworthy/1100-6525488/ They were reportedly working on Payback, and as it was shut down and Bungie went through leadership restructuring, they both had no path forward at Bungie, so they left. Even they were hit by whatever the heck is currently going on at Bungie. I've seen it speculated this is the start of the dissolution of the board as per the acquisition.

  • Luke Smith has been sunset. How appropriate. I don't usually revel in someone losing their employment, but for him I'll make an exception.

    • All I have to say about this is that Luke Smith had no business working for this developer. So no lose there...

Everything we needed to know about Luke Smith: Luke Smith: All I can do is answer that with the same thing I just gave you... We're really comfortable with the value we're giving to players this autumn. I believe that once we begin to share more, players will be even more excited. And for existing players it also comes with the Founder's pack with a new Sparrow, shader and emblem. Eurogamer: Just not the emotes. Luke Smith: It doesn't because they come with the Collector's Edition. Eurogamer: Final question on prices - Luke Smith: Is it also the final question on the emotes? Eurogamer: I'm not going to mention them again. I can't get them. Luke Smith: But you can if you buy the Collector's Edition. Eurogamer: I'm not going to buy the game and the two DLCs all over again. Luke Smith: Okay, but first I want to poke at you on this a little bit. Eurogamer: Poke at me? Luke Smith: You're feeling anxious because you want this exclusive content but you don't know yet how much you want it. The notion of spending this money is making you anxious, I can see it - Eurogamer: I do want them. I would buy them - Luke Smith: If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen. ------- Goodbye, Luke Smith. Sorry you lost your job but I'm not sorry that you won't be a part of bungie anymore. That kind of corporate narcissism shouldn't belong in the industry any longer.

    • Good. They were two of the more arrogant "we know best, play the game our way" personalities at Bungie and Luke Smith did more to damage the game than almost anyone else.

Now, can we get Joe Staten and Rob McLees back, please, so we can go back to the old ways.

Perhaps they will work for a newly formed Sony studio? Some Sony and Bungie higher ups have been friends for years. Who knows Bungie may have been helping various Sony teams technically for years now just so everyone knows. It's normal in the industry.... * Fun fact: Many Dice Battlefield devs had to help work on Madden, and Need for speed all while working on Battlefield simultaneously while employed under Dice

                  • Payback? I thought Smith was supposed to be working on expanding the Destiny IP into books, tv, etc.

                    • https://www.ign.com/articles/former-bungie-worker-claims-studio-faced-insolvency-without-sony-acquisition-report When everyone at the studio lays the blame at Parsons' feet, you know he screwed up big time. The multiple projects were going on while they were still independent, and they were already in trouble before Sony acquired them. At this point, if Parsons isn't ejected from the company in the future, I'll be convinced some force of malevolence is keeping him in his position.

                    • No surprises there ! More creators will leave ….why would you stay in a company who has no regard for its people …. And especially pumping out FS. Who knows what’s going to happen now ….will sink their claws in and do a full take over or just let d2 die out and maybe begin a d3 in the future 🤷🏼‍♂️

                      • According to this report, we are not getting Destiny 3 (or Payback) and we are not getting the large yearly expansions anymore, just episodes? Wow, Destiny is dead.

Let's be honest, they were both working on 'Payback', which was apparently shelved before the LAST round of layoffs (and was never actually in active development). Luke Smith has effectively spent the bulk of this year getting paid to lie in a big marble bath while Mark Noseworthy was getting paid to fill it with warm marinara sauce... The fact they jumped before they were actually called to account offers zero surprise.

                        • Neither of these figureheads were of any real import for the franchise. TFS narrative lead’s departure last month was more jarring… that said, folks are acting like they’ve never witnessed or heard of RIFs or layoffs in technology . My employer has implemented through five significant rounds in the past 3 years- all of which were larger in absolute numbers (some, were as significant relative to company headcount). Not to be polyannish, the franchise isn’t ‘dead’ becuase a standard business decision was made.
