Less employees while making two games equals failure

Bungie has to decide which game to focus on. The new game that their current writers have made from the ground up or the franchise they’ve struggled to write a consistent story and has been rife with self-inflicted since inception? When the next Episode doesn’t sell and has low engagement, that’s the axe for the franchise. And considering how it’ll mostly tie off the remaining major plot points… The third episode will be the last of Destiny. Enjoy the fire!

What incompetent leadership looks like Bungie needs to hire a finance professional to handle their money As well as get new leadership

    • It won't go anywhere atm as is still the only thing making Bungie any revenue at all. They wouldn't need 850 people at the studio for just 1 game so have plans for Destiny,They just need to come out with a clear path forward asap and get some positivity back into players. This is easier said than done but their studio is on the line so they need to do something.

      • Taking 4 projects, losing a bunch of employees but reducing the projects down to 2 is actually an increase in destiny support. That said I am very worried. If the rumors about no story content in frontiers is true then it’s going to be a dark time for sure.

      • What? Bungie doesn't fail. I mean they make failure quality content, but we just keep buying it up like it's another movie in the Saw franchise.

      • The more bloated Bungie became with unnecessary employees, the more money they wasted, and the more mediocrity they put out. They became lazy and complacent. They spent more time injecting politics into the game than content. Hopefully those people have been cut loose. Bungie is owned by Sony, a Japanese company, they won't put up with that crap. They're lucky they weren't required to commit Seppuku.

      • Bungie got in to this mess because they were stupid with their money. They blew it on office buildings they didnt need, on games they started to develop but gave up on, and they spread themselves far too thin to do anything effectively. With only two games to focus on it will be a lot easier, assuming they dont cut corners.

      • * D2 simply cannot reach Fortnite/Call of duty numbers but it still makes a crazy amount of money to not support it lol. Sony is not going to throw away 600+ million dollars a year away... We found the other side of the whisper portal today! Enjoy the exotic mission....

      • Depends on the quality of the employee, there's a saying "too many cook spoils the soup". It's pointless to have thousands if they have no clue what they're doing or unqualified but still getting that position from any reason

        • "Bungie has to decide which game to focus on." Those decisions have long been made and are now out of Bungie's hands. Sony decided for them. For Destiny 2 it will be deliver the minimum possible and the last one to leave can turn off the lights. For Marathon it will be make it "good enough" to release. That's all the remaining employees are needed to do and then most will probably be let go. Sony will skim off the cream. Bungie = Failure. That's a done deal. Now it's about Sony salvaging anything valuable from the wreckage. This karma for Bungie is deserved after they stole paid content from their customers. TOS agreements can't block karma.

        • Back seat development: when you think that a company can work on 1 game at a time. 4 people indie companies work on multiple games at a time. Bungie has like 800 employees left. This is a talent and management issue.

          • Let me explain something VERY clearly, because everyone is missing this point. 850 employees (the remainder after the cuts) is A LOT to work on two games. Digital Extremes (who make Warframe and soon Soulframe) have just over 300 Zenimax Online Studios (who make Elder Scrolls Online and are currently working on a 'new AAA IP' ) have just over 670 (a small chunk of which actually came from another company that shut down) Both of those other two are owned (or at least share controlled) by much larger, profit driven companies. Both of those companies have successfully delivered on a single, live service game for (roughly the same number of) years with fewer staff and suffering less financial impact while at the same time handling other projects. It isn't a numbers problem, it's a quality issue...

Bungie had 4 ips working. Marathon Destiny(the only money coming in) The unnamed AAA sci-fi(Sony took it and created a small group of developers from bungie) And a indie style game. Plus who knows what else. Now. Bungie, as of today, only has two ips. Destiny Marathon. Meaning, bungie management was mishandling the company and their funds. The hiring spree started in 2020 to handle all the above while nothing but destiny was making money. Pre layoffs, Bungie was in the neighborhood of 20/30k an hour in employees alone. Pre hiring spree, Bungie went from 250 to 800 employees through the life of destiny. Somebody with big boy pants is righting a ship. That is all. And they are beyond lucky Sony is dedicated to see Bungie continue. Nobody else would.

            • I just think it’s strange they’ve been a one trick pony for going on 10 years. One new game had a trailer ages ago and that’s it. Not sure where it got the attitude from but luck will run out eventually

Right now, the news regarding Destiny 2's future are conflicting, but I listen first to the development team of Bungie, and secondly to outside sources. DESTINY 3 WAS CANCELED? No. It Never Existed. Bungie’s Future For Destiny 2 That's the best description I found so far.

              • I'm confused. Do people actually not read the things that go over what they are trying to talk about? Bungie themselves stated that they are working on destiny, marathon, and the new unnamed game backed by Sony. Bungie had to do the layoffs due to them starting multiple different projects outside of destiny and marathon, which split their teams way to thin and obviously doing that backfired as the layoffs show. Them focusing mainly on destiny and marathon and then the Sony backed team focusing on the new game should better destiny hopefully and have the other 2 games get done sooner hopefully.

                • Cut Destiny where it is and end support, only focus on Marathon.

Marathon you mean? Good luck to SONY in managing and solve BUNGIE’s mess… And yeah, great lore but mostly terrible, TERRIBLE writing… the Witness is ridiculous, what a way to close the saga.

The issue of too many projects and too much staff (even spreading them thin as they did) can destroy a company by leading to all projects failing. Sony came in and got rid of the hires they did by offering them jobs else where and even made a new studio using some and moved a project they viewed as promising to that studio. What we have left over is basically what we always had BUT new executive management. And assuming Sony is smart they removed the morons who thought the hiring spree was a good idea and created this whole issue.

                      • It’s about acquisition and allocation of talent, not the sheer number of employees.

                        • Does this mean I can have consistent gameplay in PvP now since no one cares anymore? The gameplay in comp went to poo over the course of the day. People and their fusions and khvostovs. However you spell it. I didn't think that many people really used that gun until I played comp.
