So watching the controversy from the sidelines, I gotta put my voice in with the criticism. The quest isn't problematic for me, as I have a reliable partner for it that I converse comfortably with.
My issue is that it's problematic for other people. The first issue is that this quest's communication requirements creates a hurdle for disabled people that can be frustrating on PC and nigh impossible on console. They might not be able to hear or speak well enough to meet vocal communication requirements and will need to use a keyboard while simultaneously trying not to get booted back to orbit. What this means is there are players who physically cannot complete this quest, and thus can never get the class items. That isn't fair to them.
But that's not only what the criticism is. No, the controversy is that this is the only - only - activity in the game with a mandatory team size that isn't matchmade. People are allowed to play alone, regardless of their reasons or lack thereof. So it's an "MMO", big whoop; it doesn't change the fact that this mission is gatekept from them because "reasons". Just because you don't have a problem with the quest doesn't mean there isn't one.

3 RepliesTo understand this you need to not think inward about yourself but for the player base that want to have something where they aren't missing out on a portion of the game and now that exotic class items are a thing it can now hugely unbalance the game for some people. For myself, I'm yet to do DD and I'm a low light level. I'm getting kicked from many LFG's due to the toxic player base. I'm not part of any Discord Servers or anything. I just like to jump on and try to play the game. I don't do Raids but I barely miss anything from that. I do dungeons, Crucible, Trails etc but Exotic Class Items are locked behind something that actually screws over the player base. Now I want to be able to get DD done but how can I do that with 1) no mic and 2) none toxic players? Now don't tell me to go out a buy a mic, some people have a family to provide for over those things. You may think that a mic is nothing but when you have a Mortgage and Bills and a new born these take priority over that. Cost of living has made it hard for people. All in All, Bungie can have their DD for now but as part of the branching story there needs to be somewhere in the story that will allow players with certain restrictions to be able to get the Exotic Class item. The player base is meant to be supportive of all players and bungie has been doing a good job of that like with the additions to Trails for people that struggle to go Flawless and the Into the Light update to skip the intro. Just because you got the exotic "easily" doesn't mean it will come easy for others.

12 RepliesI love seeing the people defend bungie, they are the exact reason why nobody use mics or use lfg anymore. And they lack self awareness to realize it.

3 RepliesMy issues with Dual Destiny: - Short term memory. Jump puzzle paths, clock callouts, and vow symbols are problematic. This is a me problem. - Immune phases are annoying and bother me. This is a me problem. - Time. I can't always dedicate 1-2 hours straight. Which is why I've mostly lived in crucible quickplay. This is a me problem. - I play on exclusively on console. TFS seems a tick easier on PC. Not a big deal, but still noteworthy. I'm going to beat this sucker on all 3 classes. May take a while tho. Mission is pretty cool.

1 ReplyThis “gatekeeping” word is thrown around way to often. This is the back of my old Destiny 2 disk. See how there is NO SINGLE PLAYER?

No, the controversy is that this is the only - only - activity in the game with a mandatory team size that isn't matchmade
No. It factually is not the only mission like this.
People are allowed to play alone, regardless of their reasons or lack thereof.
choices have consequences.
So it's an "MMO", big whoop; it doesn't change the fact that this mission is gatekept from them because "reasons".
And that reason is user error. People were eating tide pods a few years ago so comment sense is rare these days.
Just because you don't have a problem with the quest doesn't mean there isn't one.
Yes. The problems people create for themselves is huge.

Thank you a very rational voice and take on this, I agree

4 RepliesEdited by The-IIID-Emp1r3: 6/15/2024 12:07:18 AMHonestly the class item shoulda been a Overthrow pub activity reward and not rng chance of chest opens post DD complete But for now at least you can double dip chests if your partner is same guardian class, bungie will fix that asap because they'd rather do that than change certain parts of the mission to be solo'able but made take more time or more mechanics (not enemy spam or 'modifiers' to make it "harder") Also this should of been matchmade, same for Overthrow, WHY am i alone in the Pale Heart? Like, why did they think it's more fun being alone? It's already bad that half the time being in patrol anywhere else theres rarely ONE to THREE if not any people in the area like why bungo put more people in public spaces *facepalms & sighs*

Edited by rtopz: 6/15/2024 8:37:11 PMDon't worry, give it 6-9 months and they'll make class exotics available elsewhere. This is how Bungie operates all content or new items. They'll see the lower grab/run rates and adjust. They do that with most of their sources of items. For example, rocket sidearm in warlords ruin is now common place in a few spots. Artifice armor now available in comp...thought that took probably a year or two. In general I agree with you...not keen to jump into this forced comms activity. I solo almost everything I can for the challenge...or just run MM for anything that I cannot manage timer wise.

3 RepliesEasiest answer to this whole dilemma is to make it possible to earn them from chests without requiring the mission. The mission is dedicated and guaranteed, or, pray to RNG. Keeps dual destiny exactly the way it is for those who want it, and gives others a very grindy route to getting it without lfg. I can't see how this doesn't happen on reset.

7 RepliesOh geez, another one of these, find a solution for -blam!- sake. If you’re deaf and on console, have a friend sit next to you and communicate. Buy a bluetooth keyboard for a few dollars. No, instead Bungie should make everything catered to disabled people, which are a fraction of a fraction of the playerbase. I’m sure this mission isn’t the only issue they run into, in life, there are many other things they run into, and many games they can’t play at all. Participation trophies for everyone, I’ve got a disabled aunt who taught herself many things and now has a respected position in a great company, you’d never see her have this amount of entitlement. Without even attempting the mission you come to the forums and whine how Bungie is ruining your lives, it’s a sign you’ve given up already. If I was deaf or mute I’d invite a friend over, have them talk to the other person and make it happen, then feel accomplished. Proud even, yet here we are in another one of these posts. Not even 50 posts, spread over 100k+ daily players And then come the “social anxiety” people, I carried another person today in the mission without a mic, he did everything by text, we failed one time and then finished the second with 14 minutes to spare But you won’t even attempt it; or even try to look for a solution. Just hold out your hands and threaten to quit the game or say how its ruining your life. Tired of reading these, knowing most of you can do it if you gave it a few tries and a little thinking. Just sad to see such wasted potential and fear.

An mmo isn’t one size fits all, tho destiny has done an amazing job at being that (even to its detriment). There are things every guardian wants that requires them to play parts of the game they don’t want to. However everything is accessible.

17 RepliesEdited by NotCreative123: 6/14/2024 5:55:50 PMI only have one hand, and I am physically incapable of going Flawless, completing a Raid, or completing a GM. So, where are my Adept weapons and Raid Exotics? Lots of stuff can't be completed as a solo player. This mission is nothing new or different. Raids are impossible. Dungeons are way harder. GMs are more challenging. Going Flawless is more difficult. Playing with a team has always been a requirement or a near-requirement for the majority of the end-game content.

4 RepliesAs a disable person I agreed with your statement and bungie mess up badly.

10 RepliesEdited by Oinkthebaconking: 6/14/2024 2:36:27 PMBungie just doesn't seem to get that this way advertised irresponsibly. They think that because they have a thousand employees who can flood platforms with fake five star reviews they will somehow make the revenue they promised Sony in spite of the deception they practiced with these exotic class items. Revenue can't be faked. Player numbers will dwindle as more players come up against this wall. Most of the playerbase just doesn't communicate on here or Reddit. They just play until they hit a deal breaker and then they quit. 1.4 rating at the BBB. Edit: seems as if Bungie ordered another puff piece from PCGamer about how the playerbase's backlash over this deceptive advertising is somehow not valid. Must be nice to think you can just pay off online reviewers to back up your false narrative. That's not going to help your bottom line, Bungie. Numbers talk, and yours will have Sony owning you this year. Btw, you absolutely KNOW it's paid for because all of those review articles have comments turned off. Tassi? Comments off. PCGamer? Comments off Look it up. Any good review of The Final Shape came out on day 2 before the servers had even stabilized long enough to play the campaign and the comments are turned off.
So it's an "MMO", big whoop; it doesn't change the fact that this mission is gatekept from them because "reasons". Just because you don't have a problem with the quest doesn't mean there isn't one.
The fact that a few are trying to push that it is an "MMO" is funny because some of them are the same people that try to push that Destiny is a "F2P" 😄 News flash people that push this nonsense, it's neither, and trying to use it as an "MMO" justifies this developers poor actions, or trying to taunt someone about it just makes you look no better than this developer that has their head in the sand.

Yeah. Well said. They could add a second boring cumbersome way to get the exotic which would work. But that is disrespectful to people who suffer from Main Character Syndrome who don’t have a choice but to think these complaints somehow affect them. I hope they can get the help they need.
-
5 RepliesMy question is why is this exotic suddenly such an issue when we've had raid exotics for literally a decade now? The class items are good, yes. They are NOT required to beat any of the content in the game.

13 RepliesEdited by Roach: 6/14/2024 3:28:44 PMThere's also the fact that, for a lot of people like me, it's not that we cannot do it or have a problem talking to people, it's that it's a tedious mechanic heavy chore that you have to unlock by repeating the same event three times. Calling out symbols ?? .. How boring. A jumping puzzle ?? .. Never seen that before. Health gated bosses with a mechanic to unlock their shields .. Hmmm, where have I seen that before this week ?? This class item should drop when you complete get all the Subclasses, Fragment, Aspects etc etc and that will be your Prisamtic subclasses complete. The mission should be for getting random rolls and maybe using it as a story or lore element with secrets to be found. That way the more casual players are happy and those who play nothing but Destiny have something to chase. Everyone is happy. But that cannot happen in Destiny now. I haven't even unlocked this mission. I tried today and it was bugged on our run. I haven't got most of the fragments yet. I have zero desire to do so. After doing all the Micah quests and six missions on all three characters to get subclasses ands such I really cannot be bothered doing three Overthrows in a row and then a stupid ending with orbs to dunk. Just to get into this mechanic heavy chore. The rest of the game has you under levelled in everything yet you have to grind a power level. I simply cannot be bothered with things like that and Pathfinder, that's designed to give you less rewards the more you play it. Who designed that ?? If I had known this would be the way to get the class item I would have skipped Final Shape. It's not just about Solo's or LFG. It's that lots of people look at that mission and see nothing but a waste of time. As for LFG, I went to do the Ascent co operative mission today. I am 2000 on all three characters. There were people making teams that were 1970 power and some even lower. I refuse to surround myself with that much stupid. Especially after my experiences today with abusive AFK's. If you are unhappy .. vote with your time. Numbers dropping are the only thing they care about. Bungie are doing what they do best, having shot themselves in one foot they are aiming at the other.

5 RepliesYou can attach a USB keyboard to PS or your Xbox console for typing. Works in D2 for chats only. There are YT videos on how to communicate using typing for this mission (hate to say this but even Kackis has one video for this!) The timer extends as you progress so that is not a big blocker. Timer anxiety had always been a part of endgame content for different mechanics. Jump here before the platform disappears etc, so I don't think that is new. Back in original whisper mission, I was bad at jumping and wouldn't even reach the first encounter by the time running out. Last season, I managed to finish legend whisper 1st time with 3 seconds remaining. 2nd finish was with almost 3 minutes remaining. It is about trial and learning and if a crap player like me can do it, anyone can!
-
3 RepliesMy only problem with it is time and tormentors. If I knew where all the hive crystals are and how to melt tormentors since they count as bosses and can't be blinded, then I could do it no problem.
-
3 RepliesWhen the game starts getting catered to the small fraction of its player base that cant do parts of the game it will be a game for no-one. This would be like outlawing peanuts because some people are allergic. 100% of the game doesnt have to work for 100% of the player base just like 100% of games arnt for 100% of people. I have to imagine far far far more people enjoy this kind mechanic communication driven challenge then dont for one reason or another. I completed it with a deaf dude yesterday. Figure it out or play a different part of the game. Theres so much content to do, not all of it has to be for everyone.
-
24 RepliesHigh end PVE content, respectfully, is under no obligation to cater to people who cannot use standard input devices.
-
3 RepliesI’ll say that last encounter is problematic, it does not need to change constantly There also shouldn’t be a timer, I’d rather have revive tokens
-
6 RepliesWhat people like you tend to ignore, is that- One: life isn't fair Two: the entire mission is quite literally impossible to solo, and bungie changing the fireteam requirements isn't going to change a single thing Three: not everything is going to be made to accommodate disabilities or people who let their anxiety control their lives, nor should everything be. At the end of the day, limitations exist.
