I fear for the future of Destiny

After getting my feet wet in TFS, and talking to friends, with a little bit of forum/social media reading, I fear for the future of this game. The game feels more difficult. People are frustrated. Content is alot more unforgiving. For a player like me, I can manage. Ive done hard content before. But thats not who I worry about. Watching all my more casual friends just absolutely not have a good time. I finally got my wife to play this game, because having a gamer spouse rocks, but shes telling me every day she isnt having fun. Yeah, shes casual AF, she didnt grow up gaming like I did. Shes probably going to quit. But shes not alone. All my more casual friends are dipping out. Finding it hard to keep going. And why I am so worried? Because I played WoW on and off for over 10 years. I played Lost Ark. I tried Wildstar. Ive played alot of MMOs and other online service games. I have seen what happens when the casual base is abandoned to make a bunch of hardcore basement dwellers happy (we call them streamers now). It does not end well. People who see the mass whining now may roll their eyes because thats the first step. Then comes the silence. Then the panic from bungie because their numbers are tanking. Sony is looking over their shoulder wondering why the playerbase numbers are cratering. But by then its too late. And to the hardcore players and the Saltagreppos of Destiny: when Bungie does panic balance to try to get the casuals back, youre going to hate it even more.

I have to agree. My wife started Destiny and all she wanted to do was play the game with a bow and an SMG, but while you can do that, it's not ALLOWED for most of the content. Getting her to understand the value of special weapons and how to use them, what situations she should use them for, it's fine for the people at the top to get geeky about that. But logging on and joining me for some random fun doesn't seem to be allowed anymore. Strikes with surges and a minus 5 delta is fine to ADD to the game, but making it REQUIRED just seems dumb. I have wanted a heroic nightfall playlist because I liked that difficulty for myself and just wanted it to be more random, not the same strike over and over. But no, I don't get that either. I'm also getting older and it's just time to put this game down if it's going to keep getting more difficult and demanding of time. I thought this game was for me, but I don't think it is anymore. I truly don't understand what they're doing anymore. It's like, seeing higher death counts in the data is their motivator, not fun.

  • It is an interesting relationship Bungie has with their streaming community. They are given substantial amounts of free silver to buy and show off cosmetics on their streams. A core group of streamers meet up with Bungie prior to new content release to test and suggest tweaks. Many of their ideas creep into gameplay there. They often have individual gripes or want something nerfed and changed, having such a close relationship with Bungie it usually happens. Are they play-testers? Part of Bungies development strategy? Or an elite tier of gamers who drive the games direction for profit? Certainly changed gaming the last few years.

    • Finally someone who gets it. I said the same thing, and after being screwed time and time again by Bungie’s business model, I chose to hold off on buying this expansion and I am glad I did seeing that it only caters to hardcore PC player base who belong to dedicated clans or friend groups of other hardcore players. Even solo hardcore players are being shafted. The content is too challenging, which causes frustration and leads to toxic behavior/rage quitting by impatient players. Casual players are going to abandon this game and move on to less frustrating games that are challenging, but fun. Worse thing Bungie did was to add time gated challenges to this game for normal content. Make a masters mode time gated, but leave it out of normal play.

      • I’m a hardcore player and I personally am not enjoying myself. Difficulty is nice a bit but it comes at the cost of replay ability. The raid and dual destiny mission are prime examples. They were fun the first time but just get tedious the next few times because they are long, repetitive, and just obnoxious. Like you said if this is the future of destiny I’m out. I miss the days when I could take an hour session and farm some loot multiple times. Now with how long content is getting that farm turns into 1 run. The only time I truly had fun this whole expansion was the 12 player activity. I enjoy power phantasy and chaotic gameplay over slow and bullet spongy gameplay. Idk why people prefer the reverse but I’m in the minority it seems.

Compared to last year and previous years in certain portions of the game it doesn't really feel nearly as hard for us being lower in power than we will eventually be. The streamer thing makes no sense because its an obviously small portion of the people that complete things that people pay way too much negative attention to in order to make their points. So scapegoating. Numbers don't seem to be cratering, especially compared to last year when a significant portion of the game (and especially PvP) was set up around more casual players. Of course some of it wasn't but a lot of the endgame actually was like the raid and then the casino rng stuff for people that don't have the time and all that. And the removal of power leveling. And Titans. Its kind of flipped back to how it used to be now where endgame is more endgame and the destinations are more casual. Last year it was the opposite for the most part and PvP will probably just continue being whatever.

            • Long rant, but who cares. If I really like a game, I become a hardcore player. I LOVED D1. Played all the raids, both Normal and HM with PUGs even though majority of my friends were casual at best. After the atrocity that was D2 Y1, I left for about a year until my spouse, who I had just started dating, had discovered a love for Destiny after hearing me talk about it a lot when we were just friends. We started midway into Forsaken after she played through all the rest of the previous Destiny content to get up to speed. My absolute disappointment to see the flagship raid exotics now being locked behind sheer dumb luck again like OG Vex completely shattered my interest in playing endgame or remotely taking it seriously. The whole reason I loved TTK and Wrath was because the quests made them TRULY worthwhile with a little effort. Knowing I was helping others made me feel like I was doing my part in the community. Now my two reasons for enjoying endgame were virtually gone. Devoting so much time to luck in a video game is just insanely stupid and devoid of any logical reasoning. My spouse wasn't into endgame stuff anyway, partly due to social anxiety but also because of my lack of interest. But she loved the story and the casual content. So we stayed for the most part. We watched Lightfall and noped out after immediately noticing the lack of enthusiasm in the ViDoc. We do not regret it but played when they made it all free. We intend on getting TFS for the hell of it when it goes on sale. The current endgame design DOES NOT facilitate community engagement whatsoever. It's built SOLELY to be a masochistic E-Peen measuring contest and its so sad to watch what Destiny has become.

I’m a hardcore player, I like difficult content and activities but my complain is when Bungie makes artificial grinding with useless stuff. Go do 3 strikes to check a box, go do 5 things to check another box. I rather have something hard, challenging and do it once then all this useless stuff for “player engagement” for the shareholders to Keep them happy. Why do we need to do 3 things to unlock new mission? Is literally a waste of time and once should be enough.

              • Don't worry, pal. All the "hard core" will buy extra copies to make up for the loss of all those "filthy casuals".

              • I'm not sure about fearing for the future of Destiny as a whole but some very valid opinions being posted on this thread. Its becoming clear now that Bungie made game design approach changes in difficulty to push raid and dungeon mechanics into wider parts of the game. Equally the social aspect was always a part of the game, they are now doubling down on making that a core part of the design too it seems - which shouldn't be a huge surprise considering the amount of Fireteam finder details and updates they've talked about in the weekly updates prior to TFS launch. What they appear to have done is limit (or in some cases remove) your options to choose wether you want to engage with these aspects now - I'm not sure 'forced' is the right word but will be limiting the ability for many players to do these things unless they can adapt to the changes. I think many are quite rightly upset as their enjoyment of the game was the natural flow of many of the activities, which has been changed with mechanics (timers/duo/comms needed etc) which could avoided before or just LFG'd casually if you needed 2 or 3 other players to complete. Equally making you always under-levelled for activities (e.g again -5 for vanguard playlist?) is also a noticeable feel in the difficulty and a shame you can't overlevel now if you put the grind in. As much as I loved the campaign and the conclusion to the story, which was fantastic - I did at times find the constant mechanics a slog at times and repetitive - I'm not huge raider but have enjoyed doing the raids when I can, just not sure they got the balance right at the moment. I've no issues with items being rewards only in raids or dungeons, nor do I have any problems with these activities being challenging with mechanics/timers/difficulty, but pushing these gameplay elements into wider parts of the game so quickly is probably why many have reacted. What is sad to see is such a divided playerbase now on what was such a high moment for the game, I was also shocked in how many of the big streamers reacted negatively toward 'solo/casual' players when many were just making valid points about the difficulty in playing Dual Destiny activity. Hopefully Bungie will look to provide an alternative option for players to obtain the exotic class item (which was marketed as a key part of the new prismatic sub-class) As strange approach overall - I'd be interested to see the data on how much of the playerbase is solo players vs fireteams/clans as we know Bungie love the data mining thing - surely that would have informed them the reaction they would get when pushing the co-op modes.

Yeah this community loves to respond to critcism with "just stop playing" I'm 37, and I've been playing videogames basically full time since I was 7. I've lost count of the amount of communities I've seen fall apart and games shut down after the bulk of community "just stopped playing." I don't argue with these people any more, they're just begging for their own downfall. Nobody ever considers this, no matter how elite you are, or how "promlg" you think you are, those casuals you like to get an atitude with, they're the only reason your achievements have any transient meaning, without them, your "skills" are nothing. But everyone always realizes too late that online games live and die by the masses, not by the 1% of the 1% of solo self found hardcore mode nightmare tier XIII players.

                  • I could not agree more! I don’t struggle much in this game. I certainly play more than most and I’m definitely a 1%-er but I do NOT like how they continue to cater to the small hardcore and streamer community. It’s literally killing this game for a significant number of people. This pivot towards increased difficulty is not fun for many. I would argue that it’s not fun for most. Don’t get me wrong, there definitely needs to be difficult content and I’m not advocating for the hardcore community to get abandoned. But there should be tiers. For example, they could have included a much more difficult version of the Dual Destiny quest with a shorter time window but with double the rewards and maybe an emblem for our fellow Guardian masochist out there, lol. Conversely, they should also NOT abandon the solo and casual community. There should’ve been a way for solo players to acquire the new exotic class items. It definitely seems like this whole expansion is specifically catered for the Streamer and YouTube community. Why do I need to watch a video to figure out how to get the Khvostov? Or the Prismatic fragments? Why is everything so poorly explained? This is precisely the kind of thing that makes this game uninviting for new players.

                  • On higher difficulties, the game basically becomes a cover shooter, which kinda just takes away the “fun” factor.

                          • Every day for 2 weeks I am reminded why I did not pay for this game. My main friend who still plays says the story is amazing as anything Bungie has ever done. But then I look at path finder and wonder what was bungie thinking and do I want to be stuck with this crap for another year? The answer is simple, NO. I am not happy with the difficulty changes. They are not warranted for normal activities. Champion in normal strikes, raid mechanics in normal campaign missions. Every boss with an immunity phase or 2 or 3. No thank you! Not fun or engaging. I even had one elite players tell me games are not supposed to be fun or engaging, they have to be a challenge. Anyone not up to the challenge should go play hello kitty. I am very vocal, Bungie needs to know, but it is already too late. Bungie could give me the expansion and all the seasons/episodes, and I still would not play. Bungie lost a multi year player who always bought the whole thing up front at one time. No more!

                            • There is no one difficulty that will make everyone happy. Developers know this, which is why most games have difficulty options (including Destiny). As a whole, Destiny caters to the avid gamer more than the casual, mainly due to the time it takes to properly buildcraft and obtain the necessary knowledge to complete Raids and Dungeons. However, Bungie also does a lot of good things for casual gamers as well. The Dark Souls franchise is a series that caters almost exclusively to hard-core gamers, and it is incredibly popular. Minecraft, Roblox, and Fall Guys mainly cater to the casual player, and they also remain popular. A game developer has to decide which kind of player they are targeting and how difficult something is perceived as being. My understanding is that the "difficulty" of the mission isn't the mission itself but the difficulty in finding another warm body to play with.
