Since the Final Shape came out last week, I have experienced frequent (4-6x per day) hard crashes of Destiny 2. The game screen freezes for about 1 second and then the PS5 crash report menu appears. I have reported every single crash with video using the PS5 crash report feature. My amateur troubleshooting observation is that the crashes almost all seem to occur when Destiny 2 is trying to load something. It happens sometimes when I am opening my in-game character menu, sometimes when I am opening my vault in-game, sometimes when I open up a piece of gear on my character to inspect the details of it, and often when I am loading between public zones – such as on patrol destinations. It has also sometimes crashed in activities, but only multiplayer ones, such as multiplayer Overthrow or story missions where I am with other players. The most consistent way that I have found to replicate the crash is to load into the Europa Eventide Ruins patrol zone. Then I get on my sparrow and quickly go to the Cadmus Ridge zone. The game will hard crash nearly 100% of the time when I arrive in Cadmus Ridge. However, if I go slowly and pause in the transition area between the two patrol zones, then the game will not crash. If I repeatedly transition back and forth quickly between those two Europa patrol zones, then the game will eventually crash. I have an M2 expansion drive in my PS5. Thinking that this might be a storage issue, I have tried moving the D2 game from the internal PS5 storage drive to the M2 expansion. But the storage the game is on does not seem to make any difference. The crashes are consistent either way. I have never seen Destiny 2 crash this often or this way before Final Shape. I have also never seen this crash behavior on any other PS5 game. The crashes do not seem to increase with playtime/heat in the ps5 system. It will crash just as frequently if I have just started the PS5 up cold or if I have been playing for 4 hrs+.
