I was going to make a more open post discussing some of the reveals about Revenant and Echoes that caught my attention but instead the launch trailer for Echoes has seemingly confirmed my biggest fear regarding the future of the Vex.
While the reveal event showed that these new Vex seem to have addition protrusions to mark them from the regular units, the launch trailer for Echoes has revealed their purpose by having the Vex attempt to collar Saint-14 with a similar device for the purposes of controlling him.
Meaning that by extension these Vex are being forcibly compelled by this new antagonist as opposed to them being an actual leader within the Network.
With Maya Sundaresh undoubtedly being the big bad for this Episode this marks yet another time that the Vex have only been story relevant when they are enslaved by an external force. The Sol Divisive under the Witness has been the biggest example of this, but Splicer was another example where the Vex found themselves under the control of Savathûn.
Bungie seem to have utterly given up on evolving the Vex as a species without relying on other characters to elevate them. It’s a sorry state of affairs when one of the main enemy factions has a completely lack of character or interest.
This isn’t to say I don’t think the narrative in Echoes will be good, in fact I think introducing Maya as an antagonist and leaning on Saint-14 as a character separate from his new experiences with the Eliksni is going to make for a banger, definitely an improvement over the launch seasons we’ve gotten in previous years.
I’m simply reiterating a frustration I’ve had since the failure of Curse of Osiris.

1 ReplyNot just that. Where are the -blam!- combat units. I want more enemy types. Im sick of trashgoblins.

The Vex always seemed more like a force of nature, maybe an anthill at best. It’s also pretty difficult to inject personality into mathlete microbes.
-
That's the problem with the vex they are meant to be microbial lifeforms driving machines so making an actually interesting antagonist is hard unless bungie does a slight retcon which lets face it most wouldn't notice.
-
Yeah. I want cool Vex stuff. Vex, Venus and Nessus are my favourite parts of Destiny.

Yeah, they were alot better when we didn't know know much about them, and had there own agenda to replicate and similate reality And The Sol Divisive should have been an outlier , because the Vex under Atheon didn't worship anything , in fact Bungie confirmed Atheon is a play on the word Athiest , meaning you don't serve any way of life or religion They could have been a threat bigger than the witness, a force that can win by rigging the game, changing reality till they get a favorable result, kind of like reloading saves in RPGs, kind of like what Skynet does in the Terminator franchise In fact that's what Osiris was exiled for, saying he has seen the future and there are no timeliness where we win -
1 ReplyI think Maya (or whoever it turns out to be) will actually be an evolution of the Vex, rather than them simply being controlled
-
The vex are pretty much just pests at this point in the series history. Only really serves to take up seasonal story really

Sad Cayde died...again because he was her bodyguard pre-golden age

10 Repliesagree, they made the easy choice in making them little more than puppets for whatever Big Bad is on the menu. But the writing was on the wall for this to happen. Sucks that they didn’t come up with anything meaningful. They even dropped making more combat units
