Who is this game for anymore?

In the past year, most of my time in D2 was just doing bounties, playing PvP, Nightfalls, etc. Recently, I got back into raids with the help of Twitch streamers because none of my IRL friends or online friends play anymore. Coming back into raids and interacting more with the community, I met some cool people, made some new friends, found some entitled jerks, and yeah, generally, I can say I played the game and did some things. Into The Light got me pretty good, I was very excited for Onslaught and most of the returning weapons. I was a little confused about Hung Jury but someone at Bungie loves that gun, I guess. Still, ITL was mindless and fun, even though you could still easily "Game Over", but it was still enjoyable and honestly a pretty good system to get New Lights into the game. However, I noticed that streamers started to not run Legend Onslaught as it "was not stream friendly." Ok. I guess. As the weeks went on, more and more glitches and issues became apparent (door switches not working, portals not working, etc etc). Most people wrote it off, but, it did cause some frustration. And some truly hilarious moments of Bungie suggesting to leave the activity early to avoid the locked boss door, when they were trying to get people to STAY because the late wave loot wasn't worth it for the time. Pantheon, however, was when I became aware of something. It was also meant to be a way to get New Lights and players who don't raid into the game and get some more gear. But why would you tie extra difficulty into that? Why not leave the encounter as difficult as it was, just add the point system, new mechanics, and time limit for the rewards? Because this was the "streamer" mode. This mode was meant to increase game time and artificially boost player engagement. You had to get a "sherpa" because you had a 99% chance of LFG being an absolute toxic dumpster fire where your time went to get burned. All for items that were objectively easier to get in the normal raids, and some emblems that are purely cosmetic and a title that has since become a meme. Streamers offer the best and most cost-effective form of marketing today for video games, among other products. And with diehard streamers who will always carry the Bungie flag for them, they help push the same narratives: "Bungie had layoffs, and look what they still were able to accomplish? Amazing!" "These rewards are limited time! Better !raffle chat!" "Gotta get ready for TFS! This is Bungie at their best!" Why wait for those curated Forbes articles to get published while the servers are still down so you can tout the review score and headline in the "group hug" X post or TWAB next week, just have streamers do it for you before the fact, and for free! After coming back to this game from around, I guess, Forsaken or Witch Queen, and from someone who loved every moment of D1, I finally realized: this game is for streamers. It isn't for gamers. The company that made Halo into a household name has turned the game that I thought was the most amazing thing I had ever seen into an action-platformer MMO that just happens to have guns you could shoot, maybe. Destiny 2 is a game made for content creators. If you choose to play, well, you gotta pay for it because whatever is pushed in the latest expansion will be over-tuned, so you will be at an objective disadvantage. You gotta feel empowered for buy the game for the 4th or 5th time. But if you want to have all the fun your favorite D2 streamer is having, and run the same meta loadout they are, you gotta pay up. Add to that the absurd number of troubles that plague Bungie launches. How in the world do people continue to let major companies get away with shipping sub-par products? In a world were getting value for what we pay for is less and less every day, how do you continue to give them money and enabling them to continue to take advantage of you? Thankfully I had the second thoughts before I sunk my cash into this shipwreck of a developer anymore. If you went to a restaurant and they told you, "Well, you gotta pay for your meal before we let you in the door, and your meal will be ready in about 4 hours," you'd be pretty upset. "Oh, and you already gave us your money, but you changed your mind? Sorry, no refunds." I wouldn't eat there. If I told my boss, "The big project you had me on, well, I need 6 extra months to get ready for it," and it still had problems on cut day, I wouldn't have a job. And saying "I'm sorry" wouldn't matter. Neither should it matter when Bungie screws up Destiny; a game world that will never be what it always could have been, the greatest video game series ever made. Don't let the gaslighting fool you - this is a money grab for an asset dump of what they had lying around after the talent got wise and left. This is the real Final Shape. Guardian out.

Just say that the game isn’t for you and sit down. I don’t stream. My friends don’t stream. We all have two jobs. I do pretty well in this game. I’ve done every campaign on legendary and several dungeons on Master. Hella gm’s. Multiple raids. I’ve gotten to adept in comp and gone flawless several time. I hate post like these. Get better.

      • The increasing difficulty turned me into a "why bother casual". The time invested required for the end game is just so massive. At least D1 raids didn't have revive tokens and mechanics that required choreography from all six players.

        • For what it's worth, I agree with you. I used to play lots of PVE with friends and enjoy this game from the D1 days. I have purchased all of the DLCs, Expansions, Seasons, and whatnot for years. Sank hundreds of dollars onto this game, and really loved it. Then, as monetization slowly increased to intolerable levels (to me at least), my love for this game began to falter. Add the changes that followed to the whole PVE experience with the 'Champion' mechanics devised to force us into predetermined load outs, the 'Immune' Boss health mechanics, the increased difficulty for most end game activities devised to appease streamers and no lifers. The Sunsetting of lots of paid content, the continuous nerfs, and other things made me grow sick and tired of the direction this game was taking. I stopped enjoying PVE and ceased playing raids and end game activities. Even the campaigns were no longer fun for me. The Seasonal activities became super-boring and repetitive. So I stopped purchasing anything anymore after The Witch Queen. Now with this latest release, I looked at YouTube videos to have an idea whether the Final Shape campaign was worth buying for me, and to be honest, I decided that it is not. I will not spend one single dollar on this game any more. Sorry. It used to be great, but now it's only a money grab, just like you said. There are many ppl out there that are still very happy to throw their money at the screen. I am not one of them. At least, not any more.

I dunno man. I'm done with this game after this expansion. It's mutated into something so far removed from destiny it's unreal. Bungie created a truly unique game and has slowly let it die and morph into a pale shadow of it's former self. Let it die. And let's enjoy other games

Destiny has been repurposed to be for people who live to play only one game for years and streamers / content creators. Can't wait for it to go on sale so I can see the final campaign I'll ever play. I refuse to pay full price for this product anymore. I'll be prepping for Season of Discovery P4 and working towards my Quest Cape in OSRS until then.

The disconnect between the responses to posts like this that you're seeing here on these forums and the sentiment in the rest of the community should be saying something about the biases that people here have developed. The final shapes review score has been climbing consistently in spite of seeing a massive review bomb on day one due to the server issues, and that's a testament to the fact that the people playing it are really enjoying the content. I'm not saying that you need to enjoy it because most of the people reviewing it are, but I never wanna hear people on this forum saying stuff like this and then claiming that their opinions represent the majority again. These forums have, and have always had, their biases. People here will tell you that up is down, and that if you say otherwise you're either a bungie bootlicker or a mindless follower to whatever twitch streamer they're pissed off at on that given day. Not everyone will, but there's a lot of self righteousness here, and I think that in this moment we should be hitting what is probably gonna be the biggest wakeup call for the community. That we actually do like destiny. It's not addiction, it's not stockholm syndrome, it's not anything like that. There are so many people out there who, despite it's flaws, actually love this game. And love playing it.

              • I’ve played off and on since beta. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the game through its ups and downs. The game has slowly been ramping up monetization. I can’t deny that. Definitely not cheap for new players to just jump in and play. I also am a firm believer that all cosmetics should be sold for bright dust and be available all the time for purchase rather than only certain weeks. The games difficulty in obtaining higher end gear has been toned down a bit but there’s no reason for the game to keep new players from obtaining decent weapons and gear while playing casually. There is still more than enough stuff to obtain through doing harder content though and I feel like the game is in a much better place in that aspect than it has been in the past. Does the game appear to be catered to streamers? No. There are some good content creators in the community though that are influential. Was Pantheon catered for new players? Definitely not. Well coordinated and communicative teams were able to do it. Onslaught was definitely for everyone as it provided a way for casual players to obtain some of the games most desirable raid legendary weapons. The game is constantly evolving and I believe that many things are getting better. Monetizing every little aspect of the game has been ruining the game for me the most though and made me not want to play many times. It’s not the problem with affording it, it’s the problem with cutting dungeons from expansions and such. Hopefully this will change as well but the game has always been a MMO style shooter.

              • Its extremely for the new blueberries.. its why they changed the economy.. there are literally two actual hard things in the whole game thst you need to prep for.. zero hour legend and the current raid thats happening now. Everything else? Is joke difficulty

Bungie always sold this as something for endgame enjoyers to test themselves in. You thinking this was for the noobs and the new lights was all on you.

                • I can’t believe we still have to say this but, once again, Pantheon was NOT meant to get new players into raiding. It was meant to give raiders something fresh to do. There’s a reason why it ramped up its difficulty and changed up the encounters. If it was meant to get new players into raiding, it would have been at power level and not changed the encounters. I honestly have no idea where the idea that Pantheon was for new raiders even came from. Because it gave out loot? That’s just dumb. Of course it gave out loot!

                • Pantheon was not made to get new players to try raids, Bungie even said it was a challenge designed around and for experienced players.

                  • Comparing a game to going out for a meal is the stupidest thing I hope I hear this week. If you are expecting things you pay for to have a similar level of standardisation you are not living on planet earth. “I had to wait 6 months for an overdue car and for my video game it was only a few hours waiting” etc etc etc.. Fail.

                  • Nobody is ever happy. Make game too easy? People complain. Too hard people complain? Here’s an idea. Just play the game when you can. Stop following streamers that say get this god weapon. God roll depends on the player. Myself I have some semi unpopular choices for players be and pvp. But it works. Sometimes I got time. Sometimes no. Just have fun do your strikes, bounties, PvP, etc. if you find cool enough folks then trials and raid
