I'm killing guardians with hand cannons and getting no progress.

It doesn’t work in any activity other than Raids/Dungeons. I know, it’s stupid. Just go into the very beginning of Grasp of Avarice with the cave, and shoot the Thralls coming out if it. I just used Thorn and got it done in about 30 minutes.

Bungie incorrectly listed one objective as killing guardians in PvP. The actual second objective is kills inside raids or dungeons. Since midnight coup is a raid weapon, its second objective is RaD related like succession. The second objective likely is from Luna’s howl, which is PvP related like Mountain Top.
