I think it makes sense for bungie to weight a fireteam as slightly stronger than those individuals solo. Note that I said slightly.
It does not make sense to try and match teams against same-sized opposing teams. That extends matchmaking times and causes highly unbalanced games.
I have friends who are not PvP mains (I'm not a PvP main but I'm at least decent at the 6s game modes). Trying to group up as a large fireteam invariably means we will face LFG or clan fireteams of absolutely cracked players who are stomping their way through the playlist. It is genuinely no fun to get wrecked over and over, with no chance of coming close to winning gunfights, let alone winning matches.
The problem is that fireteam-based matchmaking weights fireteam size way too strongly vs actual skill. So we end up with these matches with massive disparities. It has ruined the social aspect of fun, casual crucible with friends.
In the past, we would get groups of PvE players together for Iron Banner. No more. If anyone wants any hope of winning, you can't have a fireteam bigger than 3.
I wish Bungie would un-weight fireteam size and focus more on actual skill.
Here's an example match:

I don't care about the loss. Look at the kills. One team had 84, the other had 46. It wasn't close, it was never close, and it wasn't going to be close. The outcome was predetermined before the match even started. It wasn't fun, spawning and getting killed, over and over, for most of my friends.
The problem was that Bungie prioritized fireteam size so strongly over skill that the skill is widely divergent.
My favorite part about this game is playing with friends, and that's just too hard to do in crucible right now. It makes me sad.
