Bungie, time gating could LOSE you players

First, I would like to establish that I understand WHY they are time gating the weapons: giving players a reason to log in every week will help player numbers, something crucial for bungie especially now that Sony execs are breathing down their necks. The purpose of this post is to argue why that may actually do more harm than good, or at least why it may hinder the overall potential of the update from a player satisfaction and retention standpoint. We don't grind for weapons just to have them, we grind for them in order to use and enjoy them, and what better way to enjoy them than to grind for other weapons. If someone who adored midnight coupe grinded and got their god roll, they'll want to use that roll. Onslaught gives them a place to use it while also grinding for other weapons they love and enjoy or perhaps missed out on before. Time gating ruins this; someone who does not have much interest in the initial weapons wont seriously grind until their weapon of choice is available. Remove time gating and I believe you will see a higher retention in onslaught and log ins in general. (EDIT) I had a fruitful debate with someone and decided to add this little snippet as I feel it adds to the overall argument: I disagree with this issue simply being the forum whining. I game with a relatively large destiny group, around 30-40 people when the most active, although that number has dropped to around 4-5 due to burnout (me included). The whole discord was buzzing with the reveal of into the light, with people who hadn't even played this season's questline yet making plans to be together at launch. The time gating announcement was a huge mood killer. Even if it is just "time-gating weapons" its like the hype completely died. Now, almost half of the members aren't planning on even playing into the light, instead just playing the content whenever they eventually decide to pick up the final shape. Those that are still planning to play are now much more reluctant and are treating it as a weekly grind (similar to the seasonal story) rather than a celebration. Mind you, this isn't a group full of casuals. The majority of us love running raids, dungeons, and gms, while the more dedicated few even run low mans and have consistently finished day one challenge mode raids (not me lol, I only have the RON challenge mode). Obviously there is nothing wrong with being a casual, the reason I wanted to mention that is these aren't people who picked up destiny and play every so often, these are people who have thousands of hours in the game, with some even being at the top of the skill bracket. Essentially, if these players - who have dedicated a large amount of their time to the gameplay and lore of this game - are now uninterested, how are more casual players going to react?

Also, how bout the people that play regardless? What about them? They should make it that if you played a certain amount of time this season everything it unlocked on day 1.

  • Not could lose players will lose players. Bungie keeps making bad decisions after bad decisions. From PVP to PVE and now this. It will be a miracle if bungie even breaks even on the Final shape .

  • Probably all the players we'll be glad to get rid of.

  • "Time gating" the weapons out is this dastardly thing now. Isn't that how most of the weapons come out.

You didn't finish that statement: 'until final shape drops' lol. Say that cause the majority 'leaving' will be right back then. You even said so yourself lol. Into the light isn't trying to get people back. It's a thank you for still playing to the people still playing in this extended season. That's it.

    • Going to?? ITL is pretty much all of the reasons Bungie has lost massive player populations, engagement, and -45% revenue. -Shallow hamster-wheel activity -Recycled sunset rewards from the DCV -drip fed content -Over promising and under delivering Bungie said in their “Our Path Forward” blogpost that they heard our feedback about all of the above and they’re committed to making Forsaken, TTK, & TWQ the standard they should meet or beat moving forward. Into The Light doesn’t even meet or beat the standards of the 30th anniversary update or the Age of Triumph update. Both “filler” updates crafted for content droughts and/or expansion delays.

      • Let's play a game. You tell me something that you think won't lose bungie players, and I'll tell you how you're wrong.

      • Same old Bungle, always lying, always thinking they need to trick the player base into playing their game. The Execs and upper management should do one...

      • Its funny how much emotional value people add to this tiny limited addition to the game. I mean, grow up. It just a game.

      • The issue is some of us already grinded for these guns and they took them away. While I am glad some of them are coming back, drip feeding them is just one of their tactics to extend gameplay until The Final Shape. I enjoy the game and will chase the rolls I want regardless, but I understand why people are frustrated.

        • I’m not as excited as I was. I have not preordered the game and I’m not going to be playing right away. I’m going to watch game play and check reviews. They are making bad decisions to help save them from bad decisions.

Ultimately, I don't think there are many people who will have decided to not play TFS because of this specific decision, so it's not really going to lose them a number of players significant enough to warrant any changes. As many people have already said, putting all the loot out at once means players will blitz through it, get 5/5 God rolls on everything in the first 2 weeks, complain that there's nothing to do and then disappear for the remainder of the event. Between time-gating and that, it's pretty much a lose-lose for what is otherwise looking to be a good win. Those are the people being most vocal about this, as seen on these forums. It's worth remembering that the time-gating only affects the availability of the "shiny" variants. While they're desirable for rarity and double perks, the majority of players are going to be content with their chosen roll on a normal version. While they are allowed to voice their opinion the same as anyone else, someone who wants to chase the 5/5 "shiny" of all 12 guns can't act like their views are representative of the whole playerbase, or even a large part of it. If the one you want most happens to be the last one released then of course that sucks, but with what we've been told, 2 weeks should be enough time to get it.

              • release all guns —> playerbase spikes, everyone gets what they want in a week, playerbase falls and people complain bc of lack of content release guns thru drip —> people complain they wont get their guns instantly, however playerbase will not spike then fall all at once, instead it will have a steadily increase for a short time with tiny spikes and falls each week do you see why they did what they did (the complaining happens either way)
