Remakes/Reboots

I think perhaps remakes and reboots have gotten somewhat out of hand, particularly due to a few articles I've read over the last few days. First up, a reboot of the 80's b-movies 'Ghoulies' is in the works by the original creators, who seem to have aspirations of a new trilogy, with scripts for two movies already in the works. Not sure how I feel about this since the originals were kind of awful, even by b-movie standards. Interestingly, Mariska Hargitay of 'Law and Order: SVU' fame had her first role in 'Ghoulies.' Next, 'Leprechaun' is getting a reboot. I'm at a loss here since this one wasn't that great either and proceeded to get worse as the franchise went forward. Funny enough, another well-known actress was in the movie that kicked off this series, Jennifer Aniston. Lastly, a remake of 'Little Shop of Horrors' is in the works currently, although production was delayed on this one due to Covid. I have mixed feelings on this one; I can't imagine anyone playing Orin Scrivello D.D.S. other than Steve Martin but who knows? It could be a great revival of the film/musical. Any thoughts?

    • On these specifically? No, no thoughts. On remakes/reboots in general? Sure. Reboots are kind of a mixed bag for me. On one hand, handing someone the same premise, and seeing it given new life, and a new light can be really cool. Like, if you walked up to me and handed me the premise for, say, Ben 10, then what I would wind up creating would probably be vastly different from both the original, and the reboot that actually exists. On the other hand, it's very easy to fall into this mindset of "this isn't anything like the original, I hate it". Sticking with the example of Ben 10, I was a huge fan of the original as a kid, and while I haven't actually watched anything from the reboot, I did decide to watch a couple scenes because I was curious, and it is definitely a very, very different show from what the original was, and I can't help but kind go "Euugh.." when I see it for that reason. On the other other hand, there are also some shows/games/books/movies that had an amazing premise to them, but the show itself was kind of ehh, y'know? Like, Code Lyoko comes to mind. This is a show where I enjoyed the first season much more than the later seasons, even though the later seasons had better writing, acting, effects, and were kind of objectively better. This is of course because season 1 has pick on Yumi week, but also because season 1 is where they just took the concept of the show and ran with whatever crazy ideas they could pull out of their hat, while later seasons kind of toned things down. There's so much potential here though to do some really awesome stuff, that the original show simply never capitalized on. As for remakes. They're fine, as long as you don't go overboard. I think the timeframe most people expect/want a remake nowadays is a little to short, at least in the video game spehre, but, like, they're fine. A good remake is always a blessing, especially if you don't have access to the original anymore.
