I’d rather have guns and exotic armor function completely different in pvp than in pve
Vehemently disagree.

Seems like a headache. I don't want exotic descriptions being twice as long, & I don't want to keep up with what each exotic does depending on what activities I'm using them in. Edit: also runs the risk of me liking how something works & not getting that utility in pvp or pve

  • They could just change values between them. Instead of breaking YAS to the point of useless like they have now for the on kill thing, just reduce the amount of energy refund on hit from the old version in PvP. With that PvE can still enjoy the tripmine spam while PvP needs to basically hit a whole bunched up group to get a refund. Simple as that. Another example is simply reducing the damage of something like Threadlings in PvP seeing as how they have shown they can make those adjustments. That way Threadlings can still do great damage in PvE while being only a slight nuisense in PvP. Overall, they wouldn't have to change how something works between the 2 modes other than certain values like damage or ability refund and such.

  • They already separate values between the modes. They changed YAS refund trigger specifically to be more in line with other exotics
These changes to Young Ahamkara’s Spine targeted two aspects of the Exotic that we felt were causing issues. First, we want to bring its total bonus grenade energy more in line with other Solar ability-focused Exotics, like Athrys’s Embrace and Caliban’s Hand. This change keeps the amount of energy provided large but reduces how easily it can be gained.
https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/article/10-5-23-this-week-in-destiny

  • In turn however, their change made it worse in both sides of the game. No one uses the new YAS these days. Again, they could have just reduced the energy refund value in PvP instead of botch it entirely. What about the nerf to Weavewalk's Threadlings if you get them to proc while you are still in the effect? Their damage was nerfed across the board because people were using No Time or Osteo to spam Threadlings while having 90% DR and now it's become so useless no one uses Weavewalk as it has too many downsides. What about Threaded Specter? Because of spam in PvP, let's just add a cooldown delay function. Sure it's lower in PvE, but they could have just not had the delay in PvE to begin with. Then there is Titan Shouldercharge having a small cooldown on miss. They could have just not put that into PvE, yet they did. If they truely kept values seperate, then this entire post won't even be here.

  • In that case, it was the wrong intention to go with. They made exotics to be unique and supose to be useful. If no one is using it, it needs to change to be better. There are many exotics that need to be updated and Bungie seemingly refuses to do so and the game feels worse as a result. Most exotics back in D1 were more useful than majority of the ones in D2 at this point.

  •
If no one is using it, it needs to change to be better.
That’s one way to balance things. Another is to nerf whatever is leading. That's a different topic though. I was commenting about changing functionality between activities.

  • As I stated though, they didn't need to change the function at all with the original. They could have just reduced the energy gain in PvP and kept it on hit regen. For example, YAS use to give a full tripmine back on hitting a yellow bar with it in PvE. Some people really enjoyed using it like that. Now it basically gives no energy and does barely any damage that it's not worth it. You can barely kill with it in Crucible too so what is the point of YAS anymore.

  • Increasing trip mine duration & blast radius, & giving grenade energy on trip mine kills & removing self-damage from trip mines. But again, I was talking about changing functionality between activities.
