First thing that came to my mind was the original The Lion King. The into to that movie is spectacular!!

One that comes to mind is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Jon Brion's Main Theme is beautiful and melancholic. I love how that theme eventually deconstructs later in the film along w/ Joel's blurred experiences/memories. That feeling created in the opening scenes depicting Joel's daily routine is incredible. I want to steal it. It feels very genuine, comparable to Wes Anderson's minimal + intentional "aura" surrounding his films.

Up's intro is it's own movie.

Hans Landa Inglorious -blam!-. Idk if I’d call it the greatest but it’s my favorite.

I don’t think I’ve ever thought about the best intro to a movie. That’s kinda tough. I’m a bit of a sucker for when a movie opens with a scene from the protag’s childhood, then fast forwards to the present. With that in mind, I’m tempted to say Raya and the Last Dragon. Opinions on the rest of the movie aside, I think the beginning did a really great job of establishing the world & the threat. We first get that scene wuth Li’l Raya sneaking through the temple to steal the stone, followed by it being revealed to be training and that she’s actually a guardian of the stone. We get the feast introducing the different nations, followed by the stone breaking & the different nations each stealing a piece, setting up the future objective of reclaiming the pieces as well as showing the big bad shadow monsters destroying Heart. This is all followed by a cut to a grown up Raya traveling across a desert, transitioning to a lush forest full of life to a desolate wasteland where she’s all alone. Really great beginning.

I've got a feeling contenders, but here are my top 3: 1. Shrek: The opening number perfectly portrays Shrek's attitude about life, and lets you know that this ain't your granny's fairy tale movie. 2. Inception: It's nebulous, mysterious and action-packed. It shows intrigue and already shows characters pushing established rules to their limits. It also gets somewhat recontextualized by the ending of the film, and I love that. 3. Saving Private Ryan: It's shocking and surprising how sudden all of it happens, and it instils a feeling of both shock, fear, and numbness in the audience that is fairly accurate to what a real combat scenario would be like.

Knight’s Tale.

Interstellar’s corn chase. The first time we hear that iconic theme and it’s just a great show of the writing and acting.

Edited by jmann43b: 3/15/2024 9:43:16 PMWow, that's a tough one to call. I think I'd need some sort of criteria on which to base my choice. 🤔 Edit: After some thought I'm going to say the intro to 'Saturday Night Fever,' particularly since it was somewhat recreated in the movie 'Virtuosity.' That's just one though, I'm sure I could think of plenty more with a bit of time.
