I was farming up kills for the Monte Carlo catalyst earlier, and I found myself wondering: "Why is the catalyst objective just to get kills? This gun isn't meant to be focused on shooting, it's all about melee energy." That gave me a few ideas for improving exotic catalysts to make them more interesting both before and after completing the activation objectives.
First, it would be more engaging to farm catalyst progression if you got bonus progress for using the weapon's exotic niche effectively. For example, with Monte Carlo, you could gain progress with melee kills and bonus progress for each stack of Markov Chain you have when you get a weapon kill. For a weapon like The Last Word, you could gain bonus progress for kills while hip-firing, and even more for hip-fired precision kills. A weapon like Borealis would gain bonus progress from matching shield breaks.
Those changes alone would only make a difference before completing the objectives, so the other component to this is to have the weapon continue tracking those bonus conditions after activating the catalyst. At certain thresholds, the catalyst would provide a bonus. The early tiers could be a small stat boost like +5-10 to a favored stat, then at a higher bonus level, you would unlock a cosmetic effect (similar to mementos for crafted weapons). Imagine if the symbols on Ace of Spades started glowing when Memento Mori was activated, or if Telesto pulsed with waves of Void light every time the multikill refill was triggered. What if precision kills with Forerunner triggered confetti explosions? Stuff like that could make for cool little bonuses for sticking with weapons that we enjoy, and more stat tracking is always nice for the people that want to see just how many lightning bolts they've dropped on enemies with Thunderlord.
Any thoughts? Feel free to tell me what kinds of bonus objectives and cosmetic effects you'd like to see for some of your favorite exotics.

1 ReplyHonestly, I think it's kind of a cool idea, but there's once small hiccup that would have to be addressed first: from the numerous posts I've read, about a select few in particular, the catalyst drop rates would need to be adjusted before anything else. Otherwise, those who're still working on catalysts can't benefit from your idea.
