D2 crashing issues have been occurring more frequently lately, and I'm looking for any feedback that may help me resolve the issue. I'll leave a list of the troubleshooting I've already tried below:
1) Cleared the cache; deleted local saved game, rebooted the console, unplugged for 5 minutes, restarted.
2) Uninstalled/Reinstalled D2 twice. The second time I made a point to NOT install Forsaken and Curse of Osiris, as I have heard and seen in threads that this has resolved issues in certain situations.
3) Checked my network. When the game crashes I always check my network status. Everything is good for online/multiplayer gaming according to my Xbox. I know my network speed isn't ideal, but I consistently have 0% packet loss.
The game crashes no matter what activity I'm doing. Crucible, Gambit, Strikes, patrols, Exotic missions (that was an especially interesting one; Legendary Wishkeeper at the final boss,) Riven's Lair, Coil, at the Tower and H.E.L.M....pretty much everything I try to do. It's kind of a bummer because it's preventing me from doing things like GMs, Dungeons, Competitive playlists, and any significant activities because I don't want my issues to have an adverse effect on other players.
I'll also point out that I play other games without any issues. Cyberpunk, GOW, Hellblade, Diablo 4, Tomb Raider, among others, and no crashing. I use my Xbox to stream NFL Direct ticket, so on Sundays the console is on quite literally all day with no glitches or overheating concerns. It seems strange to me, and I'd appreciate any suggestions that anyone has that may help me out.
Cheers, and happy hunting.
**Update on my crashing issues** (April 5, 2024)
I haven't had a crash in D2 in over a month. It's possible either Microsoft or Bungie fixed the issue, or it might be due to changes I made on my end. I'm no expert, but I wanted to share my experience in case others are dealing with the issues I had. After trying everything I posted above, I decided rather than sending it into Microsoft or a shop that I would try a couple things.
New HDMI cable. I understand that the cable that comes with the Series X is labeled 2.1, and it may very well be, but while I was researching possible fixes, that was one of the reoccurring topics being discussed. For the price of a decent certified HDMI 2.1 and how easy they are to return, I thought rather than getting caught up in the debates about it I'd just pull the trigger and buy one. (I went with a Zeskit Maya 2.1 8K HDMI. $15.99 USD)
I also kept seeing overheating being an issue for some people. My console has always been well ventilated, off the floor, and kept clean; but like with the cable, I decided to try out an external cooling fan knowing I could simply return it if it didn't work. I realize there are ongoing debates about external fans as well, and I'm a believer that a person should do whatever they think is best for their investments. I went with the G-Story top mounted cooling fan. (I liked the idea of it having a temp reading on it, so if the console crashed at low temp, I'd at least know the issue was somewhere else) It has 2 modes so a person can either choose to have the fan running constantly on manual mode or allow it to turn on when it hits a certain temp in automatic mode. I personally just keep it on the lowest manual setting the entire time, and the temp never goes above 91 degrees F. (32 C) The fan itself (on low) is noticeable, but not terribly loud. I also play with headphones and sit a fair distance away from my console, so that's also something to keep in mind. When I'm gaming or in a chat, I don't even notice it other than the green light on top of the fan. (G-Story Cooling fan was $33.29 USD)
I ordered them both at the same time. The fan arrived first, and then the cable the following day, so I can't say for certain which one, or the combination of the 2 was the resolution. All I know is that my last crash was the beginning of March 2024. If I had a buddy dealing with the same issues, based on my experience I'd recommend starting with a moderate-priced certified 2.1 HDMI cable. (It will be marked certified on the package) It's the less expensive route to take, and a person may find a different, less expensive one, or catch a sale. I did both the fan and cable for around $50.00.
As I said before, I'm no expert, but just wanted to share my experience. It may be different for everyone, but this has worked for me. It's also not my intention to start a debate about what a person should or shouldn't do regarding their investments. I can appreciate both sides of the argument, but all that interested me was getting the darn thing working. Maybe I had a faulty cable that finally tapped out. Maybe the thermal paste, or whatever issues, caused the console to overheat. I have no idea and won't pretend to, but after a month of long sessions I feel as though my crashing issues are a thing of the past.
Cheers, and happy hunting
**Final Update, June 4, 2024**
As I discussed above, in an attempt to prevent my Xbox Series X from crashing I swapped out the HDMI cable that came with the console and also added a top-mounted cooling fan. I haven't had any issues since. I will say, however, that there was a time when I forgot to turn the fan on and within 15 minutes of gameplay my console reset to the home screen. I allowed it time to rest/cool down, and then restarted it, this time turning the cooling fan on. I have had no issues while the fan is running on the lowest speed. I'm convinced that overheating was the problem with my Xbox, not the HDMI cable. To me, investing in the cooling fan I listed above was worth the cost compared to sending it to a shop or back to Microsoft. Because I'm just some random gaming nerd and not an expert, I can't guarantee this is the end-all solution to crashing, but in my situation, the fan helped, and my console barely gets over 90 degrees F. (32 C) It's been a couple months with no problems, so I wanted to share my experience.
Cheers

1 ReplyI know it's been a while, but if you're still having issues, try to play with the physical disk if you have it. I have the original D2 disk and started using that to play recently and (knock on wood) haven't had an issue with it crashing since.

5 RepliesEdited by Sir Zantarin: 2/16/2024 6:25:22 PMI posted about this as well in console help. I also have this issue and believe it is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed. To clarify, I have done ALL the possible troubleshooting techniques, so far as to completely factory reset my series x to factory and only installing Destiny 2. It still crashes. I've tested with other highly graphic intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077 without any problems at all. It's only destiny. This issue is going as far back as when they did the generation upgrade for the series consoles. There are many people who have reported this issue. From what I can find, it's been nothing but Bungie telling you to talk to Microsoft support then Microsoft telling you to go to Bungie. I need to clarify that this is UNACCEPTABLE to me. I just got done spending over 100 on the game for cosmetics. I'm glad I didn't purchase the final shape because atm it makes no sense for me to further invest in destiny when I cant play without it crashing. It either completely crashes to home with no error codes, or shuts down my Xbox entirely. This isn't just an Xbox issue as people on PC I've spoken with have also had the game crash on them. I expect a response soon from Bungie on this or I'm done with destiny altogether. I refuse to continue to love this game and invest my time and money into it when this is the kind of nonsense we have to deal with. We shouldn't have to be pushing and begging them to acknowledge issues like this. This is an actual and serious issue that needs to be addressed and fixed ASAP.

5 RepliesI've been noticing this alot lately. My series x typically crashes the game, not restarting the console. The game will crash and the power light will cycle like twice quickly before coming back to xbox home screen. Been noticing this ALOT on the corrupted NF this past week. And have done re re-install, cache clear, ect.
