I just wanted to voice an opinion here about getting new players into the game.
Recently I had a close friend who’d never played destiny, dip his toes in the water of this game and helping him through the new light experience really opened my eyes to the glaring problems this game has for new players.
First of all, the overall new light experience is boring, confusing and tedious. I found myself repeatedly telling him “it gets better” all throughout the new light section. It’s effectively a 2 hour tutorial that doesn’t actually explain anything very well.
The biggest problem by far though, is the paywall. Having someone try this game for free, getting them to the point of enjoyment and presenting them with a predatory and convoluted list of dlc’s, dungeon keys and annual passes must slam the door to entry in these new players faces. Anything before the witch queen, at this point, should be free. Telling a new player to spend £40 for the new dlc but you’re still locked out of 50% of the content, or you can spend hundreds to have access to everything but then find out that the majority of that other 50% is somewhat useless is really hurting the population of this game.
Not only does your greediness keep the majority of new players away but it also stops old players who are considering coming back from taking the chance.
You should consider taking a similar approach to games like ff14 with there old content. It’s a much more accessible approach and still ends up earning square millions in the long run.

14 RepliesWhy not just make everything free, like Warframe?

1 ReplyYah bungie blows.

2 RepliesAll new players should get ice breaker

6 RepliesPeople having to pay for things is predatory 😅🤣😆🙄😆🤣😆

Anything before the witch queen, at this point, should be free.
Nah that's stupid. What they could do is give people an option to buy all the content before the current expansion in one package though.

Let's all just relax and wait until "Into The Light" thing drops in april. After that, if it doesn't fix the new light issue to at least a decent degree, then go crazy with posts like this lol

You provide 0 connections between these two, bungie already changed the whole start of the game its more then FF14 does, alot more infact. But FF14 succeeds because A) Its final fantasy B) Ever since a realm reborn its been the SAME story for all players to understand, everyone reaches the same point eventually because they take the same road to get there Destiny Fails because A) The story when starting is disjointed and patcheworked in so all care is lost when it comes to story driven players B) The missions are disjointed, ugly and try too hard to “show off” players just need the basics, introduce them to the core gameplay loop with bounties that give decent gear. C) Bungie over-complicates the game, and gives 0 guides. You cant have a stat-calculator, or a guide that says what these stats do all you do is get a breif overview so new players see stability or handling go up but don’t really know what they are seeing. A easy example is reload speed, why not just have the game say how much faster the reload is? Rather then +5 to reload.

20 RepliesThere’s no “paywall”. The game is free to download and there’s a not inconsiderable amount of things to do that don’t cost money. You can try a dungeon. You can try a raid. For free. Extra content costs extra money. It’s unrealistic to think or expect otherwise. Imagine going to a free wine tasting and complaining that the vineyard doesn’t give out free bottles. The only micro transactions in this game are cosmetic and totally optional. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I’ll agree that the new light experience is boring as h e l l.

1 ReplyThe game is incredibly messy and disjointed, to many pointless consumables to navigate through, personally I'd be happy to scrap most of it, weapon crafting especially, go back to nightfall, raid etc specific loot. exotics shouldn't even be called that anymore as there so frequent to obtain, the game is just a mess in my opinion, theuve put too much into it and now for a new starter it's massively complicated and quite intimidating

24 RepliesThey should make every expansion before WQ free for new players creating an account after Lightfall.

5 RepliesYou're absolutely right... I've been a Destiny player since The Taken king (actually played D1 vanilla, but abandoned it pretty quickly) and have always been the one trying to convince people to play. In fact I can't even recount how many times I BOUGHT D2 and it's expansions FOR some friends who showed interest. I was hooked on this game but knew the steep price, so I'd always buy the expansions for all my friends. I must've sent it as a gift more than 20 times on steam alone. Bought the whole package for my 5 year old and even my 3 year old who doesn't even play games yet. However, they managed to fumble the new player experience so bad that NONE of these friends stuck around. NONE. NOT A SINGLE ONE. And now the veteran player experience feels just as uninspired. So after years of buying this game for others and preordering, I'm one of the people who DIDN'T buy The Final Shape. And, to be honest, unless they blow it out of the water, I probably won't buy it on release. What they did to this game is so disappointing that I honestly couldn't care less about the layoffs... Good Riddance. I just hope someone develops a proper live service looter-shooter to take it's place eventually.

8 RepliesSame. I’ve had 2 previous girlfriends wanting to get into the game because of me, both couldn’t handle how confusing it was, my wife now is the exact same way, option paralysis is what I call it. too many things to do that aren’t really story related and Boggs everyone down

7 RepliesEdited by Nenya: 1/26/2024 10:12:44 PMNot only I agree with you, but I'll also add this. I preferred the time when Destiny (and other games) were box products instead of 'live services'. Meaning, you purchased a game with a set amount of content (campaign, raid, strikes, PVP maps, missions, quests, weapons, items, etc.) You spent the money, but what you purchased was always there for you to play. Forever. Now with the switch they made to 'live service', you spend the same amount of money every time there is a new release. But most of the content you paid for over the years is gone. You cannot access it, you cannot play it. You have nothing to show for the hundreds of dollars you have spent! I can see how it is convenient to them. But to me it's something that is no longer worth the price. Which is why I stopped spending any more money on this game since the end of The Witch Queen. To all the fan boys who keep defending predatory practices, this game is not 'free to play'. It's no more than a free trial, intended as a bait to try and get ppl to buy packages and micro transactions. I can see how new generations of players don't know any better and accept it as the norm. But it wasn't always that way. And trust me, any new change they make will always be to their advantage, and to increase their profit at your expense while giving you less and less.... But as long as you are happy with it... go ahead and be my guest.

I doubt they will ever re-add the missing new player experience they sunset BUT here is a option: The timeline has a few selectable playable "moments" i say they need to expand on this to have these moments be the UNABRIDGED(glares at reworked forsaken opening) opening and closing mission from each of the sunset expansions so they can understand the story. You play the opening, then get a sorta intermission with a voice-over of the cutscenes in between over-viewing the events up till the final mission that you then play. Not asking for full returned locations or campaigns just those few missions so they can understand what the heck is going on.

Edited by Primary Brick Requiem: 1/27/2024 1:44:43 AMBro new lights get so F...ed in this game I'm surprised destiny 2 hasn't been feature in a CSI SVU episode as the main culprit.

1 ReplyYup I’ve gotten so many people to try the game but none stay

2 RepliesEdited by A_mo: 1/26/2024 4:35:28 PMSometimes when you look at the way people try to pay for the game and then watch them as they try to get into the game its very similar. Sometimes the way people try to buy parts of this game makes it look like they're trying to get the game to give them something they're not paying for or more than what they're paying for. People probably aren't going to stop doing that as long as its like you say it is so making some parts free might be a good idea. But a lot of people did pay for that stuff and although some won't care if they also paid for it to be free for others, some definitely will care. It doesn't really matter to me either way but if you start people off treating them too much like they're special and like everything depends on them then later on down the line you might end up with a situation you didn't really want. Making the game itself more open to new players is one thing. But its kind of strange to say you want what everyone else has without having to pay anything close to what everyone else paid. And even though the payment thing is somewhat convoluted its not anywhere near confusing enough for it to look like anything much more than people wanting to get things for free. Which may be fine, I wouldn't know. Only the accountants know and there's definitely no reason to restricting the cash flow right now.

I guess there is two sides to this , the game has been going for ten years so a lot has a lot happened ! It’s just too late and way to much work for Bungie to improve the new light experience. It’s all go with final shape and marathons….do or die for Bungie . For new lights it’s a mess but there is plenty of streamer who have videos 🤷🏼♂️

The more people aware of this issue, the better. Welcome to the “I actually know Destiny’s biggest problem” club. But seriously, the New Light experience, as well as the insane amount of DLC purchases required is not only a stain on this franchise’s name, but just plain embarrassing.
-
1 Reply
convoluted list of dlc’s
I'll make this simple, there are only two things to buy here. The collection of all the old DLC (that are still in the game) + the newest expansion.
dungeon keys
Yeah this one is crazy, should be included in the price of a season or expansion.
annual passes
A lot of games today have seasonal models, I feel like this is the easiest thing to understand.
Anything before the witch queen, at this point, should be free.
Nope. Just because something is older does not mean it should be free. Older games, older DLC, older movies, etc.

The biggest problem Destiny has is new blood, and the long time players aren't sticking around so the population is pretty rough right now. Bungie has always been terrible at explaining exactly how things work, confusing even veteran players at times. To be fair they do seem to be trying but they are still just terrible at it. Not sure what needs to happen but unless they get better there won't be anyone left to play this game. There is no offline mode so it's gone for good if it goes, and I think that is most of our concern with the issue.

You buy LF, you get EVERYTHING! That’s how it needs to work, BECAUSE the new player experience is sooo bad.

3 RepliesI’m not exactly sure where I heard it, but during all the lay off talks a while ago, someone said they won’t make the old dlc free because a large number of ppl still buy them. Tbh I’ve had a couple ppl ask me if they should get into D2 and I’ve kinda steered them away from it. I personally really like the game but I’ve also been playing since D1 TDB, so I’ve never had to catch up with the dlc. I don’t t want to be the guy that tells someone “ ya it’s great” when I know it’s going to cost them a couple hundred and at least about 500 hrs of play time (probably more) to get everything I have.
Telling a new player to spend £40 for the new dlc but you’re still locked out of 50% of the content, or you can spend hundreds to have access to everything but then find out that the majority of that other 50% is somewhat useless
They will never get access to everything with all the vaulted content. They missed out on some of the best content in the game and that is part of the reason for the confusion.
Not only does your greediness keep the majority of new players away but it also stops old players who are considering coming back from taking the chance.
New players find out that the game is not F2P and old players find out that what they paid before WQ a lot of it has been vaulted never to return.

5 RepliesTbf, everyone was a new player at a point. I started in S15 on Xbox gamepass for free, but then still had to buy some old DLC just to keep some contents playable. It’s a commodity at the end of the day
