This has been bothering me for a while, but why can't Hive use the darkness subclasses? They've been studying the darkness for far longer than any other race in destiny. They should have been the first to learn about stasis and strand. Even if for some reason they couldn't before, why can't they use it now that they have guardians? They have the same light abilities as us, so why not the same dark abilities? Is there a lore reason for this?

2 RepliesEdited by MC 077 Lasombra: 1/26/2024 6:47:20 AMIt seems to be naturally dormant. So they likely weren’t taught it or even knew about them at all. We only learned to harness it after experiencing it by using the shard and getting some coaching. Lore isn’t clear on this and it’s intentional. Just Bungie waving their hands to make it so, imo. Also learning Stasis didn’t give us any clues about Strand. And what little we know about Light powers being learned implies it’s not easy learning new powers. So blindly groping for them would be futile. I would hazard the Witness withheld it from them to keep them limited. The Hive were meant to be disposable. That’s the lore reason. The real reason is they didn’t exist back in D1 or base D2.

1 ReplyThere is no story reason. Bungie just doesn't want to update the old enemies with new abilities.

1 ReplyBecause they didn’t buy the expansions.

The Hive have a different sort of darkness power that involves tribute to more powerful beings from the weakest thrall up the chain to their leaders, to their worm gods. They most likely are not able to use Stasis because of how they see the universe in a different perspective from other races, though that is just a personal theory. The Light is a bit more flexible, as it is part of the physical universe so most will use it, as seen with enemy weapon damage, whereas the Darkness is consciousness based. As for Strand, that's a power that Guardians developed independently of the Witness' gift through residual energy of the Veil, which we were able to learn and why no other enemy is able to use it. Of course, we know that one of the new enemies will use it in the new DLC and also we currently have many new weapons that use it as well, which is a bit strange honestly.

Aside from the big three, the rest of them seem to be semi-sentient crustacean things, and only seem to go off instinct to kill to get more power in order to grow. "Raaaawwwwr!" -Hive Knight.

In an earlier season when the scorn start using stasis, there was a brief line of dialogue mentioning the fact that the Hive don’t have the ability to use it. I think it was a throwaway line but obviously they wanted to make a point of it, for whatever reason.

The Lucent Hive have no memory of the darkness, even Savvy needed to leave herself breadcrumbs to remember all her plans
