What was it about Thorn that genuinely made it broken? I'm curious.
"It's topped the charts since it's gotten it's catalyst!"
Ah yes, a fan favorite gun that finaly got it's catalyst after FOUR YEARS OF WAITING is being used by everyone! Great! What made it broken? How was it over performing? I'm genuinely curious.
It's odd that the likes of bows and bow swapping are untouched yet a fan favorite gun that finally made it's way back to the charts in the season it finally got its catalyst got nerfed in the same season because of it's usage.
But maybe I'm missing something. I'm just an average guy in terms of ability in PvP so maybe I simply don't notice what made this gun broken. For those of you in the know, could you tell me what made this gun a thorn in your side? Why it deserved a nerf? How it was over performing?

1 ReplySimple, it became a favorite so it got nerfed. Bungie hate people having fun outside what they consider the meta.
-
The change is so small you wont even notice, not the end of the world.

Edited by DataButcher: 1/12/2024 5:51:48 PMThey usually nerf weapons based off: usage numbers, archetype outliers, player sentiment (net fun) Sandbox devs have discussed why they choose to nerf certain weapons on few podcast interviews in the past (Destiny Massive Breakdown, Firing Range [DCP]) if you want a more in-depth explanation. I’d hazard it was a mix of high usage numbers and Thorn being too good (in their opinion) compared to other 140 HCs. Hope this helps 👍

Somebody at Bungie must love Smgs and Bows lmao
-
Probably because everyone where using it
-
You think thats bad, wait for the Polaris nerf, strand nerf, wish keeper nerf, dragons breath, scatter signal nerf, solar nerf. Any meta weapons we used this season
-
4 RepliesIt shouldn't of been nerfed. But hey confidential finality is aloud to bully every other shotgun!
-
4 RepliesSame reason Vex Mythoclast got the rpm nerf. Probably some Bungie dev got rolled by it one afternoon and he made a whole PowerPoint about how OP it is to present it to the balance team. They convince the balance team that it’s somehow OP and they roll out a nerf.
-
Ikr ? Handcanons cant be good anymore. Meanwhile smg's....
-
Because it was fun and Bungie nerfs fun from D2. Ie supers, exotics abilities even the yearly snowball fights we had in the tower all removed. Sad .
-
2 RepliesIts catalyst was the selling point for the season so they obvs were gonna nerf it later on , kinda like wat they did with gally making it a "support" rl , absolute joke of a company and game. They reel u in with that 1 thing (cause making content is hard) a season then they nerf it when the cash flows in. These people shouldn't be in the gaming industry and sony should sack them all and get actual developers not ticks on the woke chart. Glad i moved on from this game.

Edited by I am kevin: 1/11/2024 10:55:40 AMIt’s not over power bungie has stated that they nerf on these 3 subjects; powercreep ( a weapon so strong there other options don’t make sence) Overpowered (a weapon or exotic so strong it it takes over the meta) Over use ( a weapon popularity the numbers of ppl using it to get kills ) the last one is happed to thorn the use rate shot true the roof because of a catalyst so they nerfed it.

1 ReplyEdited by King Dicer: 1/11/2024 12:38:46 PMthis is news to me (haven't been on since getting the Thorn catalyst a while ago) say what?! Nerfed already! I didn't even get the chance to fully muck around with it and its catalyst. Could someone tell me what the nerf was please? That sucks
-
1 ReplyCalled it a while ago. Thorn would get a catalyst, there would be a bunch of “wahhh wahhh” it would get nerfed.
-
2 RepliesIt's way to op in pvp. Hand cannons alone are more forgiving than any other class. At 30m you can shoot a foot outside an opponents head or shoot them in thw crotch and it gives you a crit shot.
-
Usage Usage dictates a lot of the balancing and when usage is so high they do get nerfs. It’s not the only reason and they will have more data than us but this is definitely the case. Bows have relatively low usage and bow swapping can be done with only a few weapons - it did get nerfed already and will likely happen again but usage dictates it’s not high on the agenda
-
I could understand the range nerf, they should have left the stability buff alone.
-
6 RepliesNerf is so minimal. Anyone half decent at pvp won’t even notice it.
-
6 RepliesCalled it. And why? Because of PvP, of course.
-
3 RepliesBecause maps are this big (| |) and thorn’s range was this big (| |).

Edited by Seiryoku: 1/11/2024 3:50:02 AMThe Thorn catalyst was strong. It is still strong. Thankfully other Hand Cannons have been left alone as Thorn jumped up in use. Specifically 140s when they ultimately decided to nerf it. Even if they now know 140s should be the baseline, they still relent to whiners. People that demand AE or stability nerfs to slide. Design choices that make the game feel like a worse version of itself. Thorn mains will still use it and enjoy extra range and stability. Even more so after a kill. And others will come off it. If people are allowed to complain and you nerf HC, Autos and Subs will be the game and the game will truly be dead. Certain legendaries have more range, but Thorn demands an aggressive play style where you balance the risk of getting the Soul Remnant and using it to push for the exotic effect or you don't take advantage of it. You also burn people and stop regen while seeing said damage tic. Ace is also strong. Momento Mori can't be pocketed anymore, but it's still a 140 rpm with 90 damage precision shots. You have to have decently high resil to not get 2 head one bodied by these things. It is a contender for the same slot. And in some game types the superior choice. Hawkmoon will eventually be custom. Craftable. I wanted a catalyst that provided a bump to range and stability to make it comparable to modern 140s. I was very excited to hear Bungie relented and went ahead and did it. For that I thank them. We received a massive boost in addition to overflow. Was it broken. No. But even if they acknowledged 140s were the desirable baseline I didn't want them to kill HC when it's so commonplace for people to continue to complain. I support a preemptive readjustment and accept 5AE.

Edited by Scourged One: 1/10/2024 12:25:13 AMWell now I'm glad I grinded out that catalyst. Thanks again for respecting our time investment with your smoldering dumpster-fire of a video game. Gee wiz, I wish I could send BungLe like.... all the moneyz.

1 ReplyI for one was getting taken out from ranges comparable to Scout rifles. Scouts are some of my favourite weapons in Pvp, and I use them often, it's pretty nutty a one handed weapon can take on a rifle

23 RepliesBecause of PVP..... remove this shite mode already. They can never balance it and it always destroys weapons and armor. Just make a generic team death match mode and put in all Blue Gear that is randomly given to every player every round.
