Crucible is a disgusting mercy-fest right now. "Loose" SBMM which was implemented this season results in wildly unbalanced teams that ends in a lackluster crucible experience. SBMM needs to be turned back up.
I had SEVEN consecutive mercy matches.
My First Match:
Fragment. My KD, 1.0. Final Score 93:28.
The other team had high skilled players capable of sliding corners perfectly and three tapping with Thorn. Within 90s, two of my teammates left after getting the s4it kicked out of them. Then within 30s, two more left, probably realizing it was a no win situation. I was left playing TWO ON SIX. During this "quitter-fest" I saw my last teammate pull out his ghost, so then I left. I wasn't going to go 1 on 6.
While my teammates were leaving Bungie was trying to replace my teammates. Every new person that joined left. FOURTEEN players eventually rotated through my team.
My Second Match:
Midtown. My K/D 2.0. Final Score: 23:87
I knew I was going to be f###ed, because I left the previous 1 v. 6 match. Bungie doesn't punish with lockouts for leaving a match anymore, they punish you for leaving, byy dropping you in a match in progress. I find it incredulous that I should be punished for leaving a 1 v. 6.
I got dropped into a team where two people had already left the match from getting theiir -blam!-es kicked. FIVE of the players on my team had ONE kill and all of them were naturally close to a .1 K/D. I can't fathom why these 5 players got matched against the other team just to be their cannon-fodder, or why I should have to go to their rescue.
My Third Match:
Wormhaven. My K/D 7.0. Final Score 97:35.
After the two mercys against me. I knew I would get a stacked team. The other team had three players with ONE kill and two players with two kills. All FIVE of these players were sub .2 K/D. Why in the world would these 5 players even be matched against my team. Its lunacy,
I don't need my ego stroked with a 7.0 K/D and frankly even though I won the match, it was a snooze fest. In the middle of my match. I sat on B, walked to my freezer chose between Chocolate Ben and Jerrys and Hagan Daz Strawberry. I went with the chocolate ice cream. I came back, did not die, and just waited for the mercy.
My Fourth Match:
Multiplex. My K/D .5. Final Score 40:104.
I hate to mercy another team because when I do, I know I'll be punished for it. I got matched against highskill players, which is fine. Except, THREE of my teammates left, since they couldn't compete. We ended up 3 v. 6 for half the match and got the $hit kicked out of those who stayed. This match had a player on the other team quickswapping out of a bow for instant body kills. (I'm a console player, I find it dubious quick swapping out of a bow for instant kills is possible on a controller, I'm sure someone will comment about this.)
My Fifth Match:
Wormhaven. My K/D 0.0 Final Score 25:86.
I got dropped into a match where THREE people had left my team because there was a 7.0, 6.5 and 2.5 K/D players on the other side. My K/D was zero because the match ended as I zoned in. Why the 4ell was I even dropped in?
My Sixth Match:
Rusted Lands. My K/D 2.0. Final Score 29:95.
My team annihilated the other team. TWO of the people on the other team left within 2 minutes. Of the remainder, not a single person was above a 1.0 K/D. After two people left the other team I just sat and ate more ice cream. 6 v. 4 or 6 v. 3 matches are slow and boring where you end up looking for someone to kill.
My Seventh Match:
Multiplex. My K/D 2.13. Final Score 151:84.
Finally my first match that wasn't a mercy. But should have been half way through the match, but for some reason it didn't happen when were were about 80 to 30. FOUR people left the match because their team was getting blown up.. Of the four that stayed (including replacements) none were above a 1.0 K/D. Credit to the guy that stayed and got killed TWENTY ONE TIMES.
I live on the West Coast of the United States. Player population is a non-issue for me. I never have to wait for matches regardless of the time that I log in. Matches during CBMM, Strict SBMM, Moderate SBMM, Loose SBMM, were easily and quickly found for me.
Loose SBMM, which is almost like CBMM now, is the problem. My match history above shows exactly what's happening. If the high skill players are matched with players that can't compete against them, the lower skill players leave.. High skill players might complain about match making times, but what difference does it make if they are matched against cannon fodder that leaves the match early resulting in a 4-5 min mercy match.
Loose SBMM has resulted in such low quality matches that I don't even care if my team wins or loses. I'm just hoping that everyone stays in the lobby and the teams get to play to the end with the point differential less than 40 by the end of the match.
SBMM needs to be turned back up, this back and forth mercying is obnoxiously stupid.. My response to anyone who thinks otherwise is simple. The lower skilled players ARE NOT STAYING IN THE MATCHES TO GET FARMED ANYWAYS..
My match history shows that the lower skilled players or high skill players who know their team is being farmed are leaving matches, when matched against high skill players and stacked teams. Which just creates $hitty matches ending in mercy matches.
The natural consquence is that people who are mismatched will continue to leave matches. Eventually, they will leave enough matches that they just won't come back. All the people leaving my matches shows that SBMM is necessary. The concern when playing in the Crucible shouldn't be will my teammates stay, or will they not . . . .

Here a month later and you could just as well be describing my sequence of games today

Agreed horrible experience, about to quit because of this... I have read this problem comes year and years back and bungie dont give a f about this

4 RepliesEdited by NotCreative123: 1/2/2024 1:49:01 AMSounds more like a Lobby Balancing issue than a matchmaking issue. Bungie has admitted that they struggle to balance teams when one team has an "outlier." Sounds like they need to improve the formula. I'm a fan of SBMM, but I don't think it works well when the population is low. Comp uses strict SBMM, and it takes several minutes to find a game. It shouldn't take several minutes to find a Control game. EDIT: Also, I find it ironic that people who complain about quitters are also quitters themselves

The k/ds being all over the place with loose SBMM has always been the biggest red flag. That 7 k/d followed by a .5 and .0 does not say "realistic" in any way shape or form. Its one of the ways you can tell it might still be sbmm without actually playing the game though. SBMM enough. That's all it takes.

My fellow child of the cosmos…we are playing Destiny 2 PvP. We have all already lost. Release all sense of control over the things we cannot hope to control. Embrace the chaotic nature of the D2 Woodchipper, get your loot, and get out. Peace and tranquility.

Facts up and down. Strict SBMM needs to stay on. So the rest of us can also get fair matches. I had a great time with it on. Once it got loosened with lobby balancing. It got worse. Honestly, there should be a solo que that has strict SBMM. I'd rather have longer wait times and then a good match. Otherwise, I just afk until the mercy happens once it's obvious either way 🤷♂️.

1 ReplyThat in a nutshell is the Destiny 2 PvP experience!!!! Imagine their next pvp game lol 10 years and this is the best it can get for Bungie, zero ability to Lobby balance.

Really great post!!! 👍👍👍. Enjoyed the explanations of your experiences. I feel like they have been tweaking the loose-sbmm too much recently. It was better when they first introduced it. What you’re describing is how matches worked before loose-sbmm was put into play. Also, next time, get chocolate ice cream with strawberries. That way you don’t have to pick between the two flavors 😁

High skill players might complain about match making times, but what difference does it make if they are matched against cannon fodder that leaves the match early resulting in a 4-5 min mercy match
Because this is what they want to happen. Their stats are inflated from game after game of this ego-stroking display that when SBMM is enforced correctly they find themselves on the receiving end. Surprise surprise, they don't enjoy games where they struggle to go even so they whined until they could pubstomp again.

5 RepliesGonna save you time because I've been arguing this for years: You, me, we're blood knights. We want a good match. We don't wanna get steamrolled nor do we wanna annihilate novice players. That's not what the twitch kiddies want. They have absolutely no qualms snowballing people way below their level. And the matchmaking times, although true at the high end, is often gaslighting. CoD MW3 just came out and as a newish game population is thru the roof. They still basically threatened Acti not to turn on SBMM. They want a single player experience in PvP. They don't care. You can't appeal to them with competitive principles like sportsmanship or balance. And they are loud. Loud enough that Bungie gives on to them. For a lil while we had SBMM recently - my fave period in D2 PvP. Decent matches, Mercies were rare. Then they flipped the switch and literally the same day of the update I'm on both sides of mercies multiple times. We're on the losing end of this subject.

Destiny PvP has always been garbage. They turned off sbmm so that basement lords could crawl all over casuals like cracked out spider monkeys, so some of the casuals left. Then they turned sbmm hoping to lure casuals back to a place that they already know is a toxic -blam!- pile, and most casuals didn't want to return. Then they started turning down sbmm again so that the basement lords would stop howling about how terrible it was to face their own kind, and it's driving away more of the remaining casuals. PvP in this game just needs to die.

Yeah I had a 0.19 today in mayhem, literally supering people & doing no damage. Cross play is a huge issue, but lobby balancing is so bad it has to be intentional

Edited by Golden: 1/2/2024 2:32:41 AMCrucible is a mess right now, I don’t know what they did to make it worse, but they did it. Check out my recent games from yesterday. I went on a 6 loss streak yesterday, and all my games I went top frag, not dropping below a 4.5KDA, and my teammates? Absolute potatoes, the enemy? Not potatoes. Altar of Flame, 23KDA, and we still lost 😂 Edit: Seems that Everytime I speak about this on the forums an employee sees this and puts me in garbage matches. First game today 2v6. Edit: 2 out of the 3 games I’ve played have been 2v6s totally radical

pvp is so -blam!- dead, there's only the sweats left eating each other. goodluck with that crap, because bungie doesn't care and it shows.
-
1 ReplyCbmm killed destiny. Numbers are super low now, because of cbmm. The no lifers get to team up, with hard meta and farm noobs , then come here and claim they're relevant.
-
SBMM is not the medicine but the disease itself. Control/Ironbanner should be varied, from easy to normal matches to difficult ones. A good mix of all. You don't have that under SBMM. Every match feels the same. It just means (Eat or be eaten) The number of players has been falling steadily since the introduction of this bad matchmaking. Nobody wants to sweat round after round in a mode where it should mainly be about variety and fun. I mean a control match is sweatier than in trials. Even in comp with strictly SBMM , it's too often unbalanced and 1 KDs are thrown together with 2s. trials is the only playlist that I still enjoy because it has a varied mix. But even there some people wish they were skill-based...
-
2 RepliesGranny searched for numbers and from March 23 to now on p.c. there's 100k less players daily. From 140k to 38 k daily. Granny is no genius but I think whatever bungie is doing/ listening too, is not a winning strategy. Perhaps bungie should completely ignore their usual creators, it's clear they aren't as popular as some believe, bungie call Dr disrespect, nevermind he already said destiny is crap. Well good luck with your awful faces of the franchise.

2 RepliesEdited by Morakx: 1/2/2024 3:39:43 PMMy guy, SBMM is still there and as strict as ever. The only thing that changed is that the playerbase is a barren wasteland and therefore the matchmaking has to automatically widen search parameters. Noobs don't like checkmate because actual aim gets rewarded while special ammo and abilities are lacking and they cant crutch on those 24/7, therefore they stopped playing. The other reason for the dead playerbase is Bungies non existant care for the game and them pretty much admitting it will slowly be put to sleep after the final shape. So yea, SBMM simply doesnt work with a dead player pool my guy. No reason for you to ask for even more strict SBMM because all that will do is give you the 20 minute queue times us actual competent players already have to endure with trash SBMM. Games like cod can get away with SBMM because ppl actually play that game and games can be found quickly. Destiny on the other hand in the current state? LOL

Destiny pvp is awful which is sad cuz it had so much potential. I told bungee years back if they didn’t hire me to lead pvp their game would fail. Toda ya so
-
yeah its ridiculous
-
Lobby team balance and sbmm are NOT the same thing. Frck sbmm. Sure if you are sitting on the claim server good for you but the other 70% just get frcked!
-
There's no one left playing PVP other than the tryhards and mouth-foaming Ximmers.
-
32 RepliesI can't believe that you think this is like CBMM. Everything can't come down to whether or not the score is close at the end. Especially when people ignore how the player population got like this.
-
12 RepliesEdited by Coal: 1/3/2024 1:30:19 AM(Just hear me out for a moment) IMO, only gamemodes that should be SBMM are competitive (rank in this case, which is essentially SBMM) and trials. Quickplay playlists in any pvp game have historically been and should continue to be CBMM. It’s called quickplay for a reason, connection times are quick, and perhaps even the games are. You get some games where RNG is on your side and you roll the other team, and sometimes it’s the other way around. The beauty of quickplay. Competitive games will last longer and scores will be closer due to similar skills playing against each other. Thats why I personally dislike competitive because I have to sweat my butt off. I like playing casually. And unfortunately, when quickplay was full SBMM, I had to sweat even harder in quickplay than I had to in comp. As of right now, the only gamemode I enjoy playing is trials because you win some and you lose some. It’s the most casual playlist right now, which is so screwed, considering that trials is supposed to be “End Game pvp”.

8 RepliesLoose or strict. This is SBMM doing its job very well to make sure people get as close to a 50/50 win/lose rate as possible. The bright side of a loose SBMM is that you are getting matched with players, making it any stricter with the current population would mean you'd find 1 match every 15-30 minutes.
