I’ve played this franchise since launch back in 2014. Convinced myself I loved it. Dumped thousands of hours into it. There have been moments of dopamine hits like no other. There have also been moments where I’m frustrated to no end.
One thing I’ve come to realize is that it just isn’t a very fun game and never really has been. We’re essentially playing halo missions over and over for a chance to get an item with a better stat roll. While that’s enough for a dopamine hit, is it really all that fun? I don’t think so, especially when the PvP in the franchise just isn’t all that fun. I think we’ve convinced ourselves that the moments of dopamine are worth hanging onto just in case we get another one of those hits. Now that Bungie has cranked the hits up to 11, the dopamine hits just don’t hit anymore. Can’t really enjoy the hits if you get a god roll every 5 seconds…
Oh well….bungie is content with a mediocre game carried by periodic dopamine hits. Suppose it’s time to hop off the train.

Bungie has always leveraged the peaks and valleys of this game… in place of compelling content. Instead of innovating, they doubled down on the moments of disappointment to joy. They didn’t account for the numbness that it creates in the experience, the inevitable boredom that comes from the repetition… even good content is essentially the same thing reordered in a different way. It’s been a delicate balance, and once things like quality, and functionality started to slip… the mask fell off.

8 RepliesIt's possible. I mean, people fooled themselves into liking bad marvel movies like Thor, Iron man, and the Xmen titles for a decade lol

I've gotten my money's worth, skipped seasons I didn't like, took breaks when I felt needed and played thousands of hours. I haven't bought the last 2 seasons because they are lack luster to me but I've still played plenty of pvp and raided some. I will never again buy another season, expansion, dlc because of bungies shady practices but I will play the things available to me for free and what I've paid for. My biggest turnoff has been the absolute neglect of pvp over the years. I don't forgive them and they will never have my money again. On top of that my friends list is empty now, none of my clan touch the game anymore. Truly sad.

Well.. To be honeeest.. I loved D1 because we were sold the idea that we can 'trust' Bungie. They would make a game meant to be played and enjoyed by everyone. No sweats, no infinite microtransanctioning; A company unlike all the other modern companies. D2 made us realize they're just.. Not trustworthy at all. They would go overboard with addictive mechanics, they went overboard on microtransactions, they increased difficulty in PvE to a point where it's tedious to repeat, they nerfed exotics to a point they don't feel exotic nor good anymore, they took away the rarity of exotics and the list goes on. The only reason I continue to play is because of the people that also play this game.

"I've played this game for nearly a decade, and there have been incredible highs, and bummer lows" like a sentence later "i have decided none of that excitement that kept me engaged for ten years was actually fun" you literally said you had lots of fun. that's what "highs" are. you just crave the attention that comes from sh1ttng on the game here. you had fun for years, you're bored now. cool story.

Nah, it’s been fun. I’m just bored of it. Doesn’t interest me in its current state. But I’ve had fun times, therefore the game has been fun. Fun is subjective, different things are fun to different people at different times. If you had fun in the past, you had fun in the past. Doesn’t mean you’re lying to yourself if you stopped having fun along the way.

1 ReplyThis should have stayed between you and the mirror...

You should find a new game then. So many great ones out there this year. How long has D1 ran with no new content? Minimum of another year and half of content in D2. Probably more. I don’t understand why some can’t just let go and say goodbye. If you’re waiting for last call you might want to get backed up lol.

Hop off the train? You like the game still. You definitely like griping about it at least. Odd sense of community fostering: Gripe on the forum of a GAME you claim you are sick of PLAYING. And for what? So the big, bad knows you’re hurt and taking your ball? God.

Edited by A_mo: 11/18/2023 3:25:54 AMIt doesn't have to be that depressing. Live service dopamine hits were all the rage just a few years ago when everyone was too important to spend more than a dopamine hits worth of time in a game at any one time. Now we've had some things to remind us all that people ain't really -blam!- so now everyone is okay with playing non cellphone like videogames but it had better be on their terms.

1 ReplyI haven't. My Hunter still wears a Last Wish chest piece from when the raid was new. Fully 99.99% of all new armor drops as unusable trash. I normally don't even check the stats anymore, auto-dismantle.

For there to be light, there must be darkness. For there to be good, there must be bad. It can't always be 100% and it should never be expected to be. That being said the quantity and quality have definitely declined over the years. I expect that is the nature of the same things lasting this long. It is sad that we can't all get what we want, but as an Aussie outlaw once said "Such is life" When faced with these truths you only have to ask yourself, is it worth it? And only YOU can answer that question. Take the honest answer and do with it what you will, mine has told me to stop playing, sad, but true.

You're forgetting the years of Taken King, Rise of Iron, and Forsaken. This game WAS good. The problem is that quality hasn't been present in a long time.

Ascribing this to others is just a coping mechanism. Misery loves company and alla that.

I mean most people enjoy it enough or are just straight up addicted. It's up to you to call it quits when destiny isn't fun anymore. You can easily take a break and come back in reality, but most people can't do so since it's addictive or fun for new lights to explore the whole game.
