I started having anxiety attacks and my current issues became worse after a "doctor" perscribed me medication. Do I have a case?

Some of you might already know due to a venting post I did a while back. But for those who don't know, here's the situation. For about four maybe five years or so, I've been having migraines, racing and intrusive thoughts, vertigo and Christ knows what else. I went to several doctors to try to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it without success. Earlier this year, I started Acupuncture for these problems. My now late grandmother swore by it, my aunt swore by it, so I gave it a shot. After a few sessions, I was slowly but surely seeing improvement. Another two problems came up. A "peritonsillar abscess" and sleeping issues. This "doctor" I have as a primary care said that for the Abscess, he'd prescribe me an antibiotic. He ACTUALLY prescribed me an anesthetic. Lidocaine more specifically. Now a question: Have you ever gargled Lidocaine? Well if you get the opportunity... DON'T. It's pure poison. When we talked to him about it, he tried to play it off like that was the plan from the beginning. Now for the sleeping issues, he said he would set me up with a prescription that he told me would help me sleep. In his one and ONLY defense, it did help me sleep, but it started making my other problems act up more. I took it upon myself to look up it's side effects and it told me what the "doctor" failed to point out. I learned that this prescription, Trazodone, was used as an antidepressant AND that when it was used with another antidepressant that I've been on for years, escitaloprám, there was a risk of developing Seratonin Syndrome and Mania among other things. So naturally I stopped taking it. We confronted him about it and all he had to say was "I wouldn't prescribe that as an antidepressant." It was then suggested to try 10mg of Melatonin to help me sleep. After taking that for about a week, I started having anxiety attacks. The icing on the cake? The anxiety not only made my Racing thoughts, intrusive thoughts, vertigo, etc. come back, it made them WORSE. After over 4 years, my own mind has been driving me almost literally crazy and at long last I could finally see a faint light at the end of the tunnel. Then this -blam!- slammed and welded the door shut. I've been having anxiety of varying intensity at least once almost every day for the last 3 and a half months. I'm kept up and/or woken up at night experiencing it, I can't eat as much food or that much of the food I like without it acting up somehow, I'm now more sensitive to the cold, I can't ride my bike or take long walks anymore because of vertigo/lightheadedness and my racing/intrusive thoughts are almost out of control. One of the best things about the anxiety? 95% of the time it acts up, I'm just relaxing or in bed. No stress, no fear, no worries, NOTHING. Then BOOM, there it is. I am nearing the end of what I can take. So, you think I have a case to press charges against this clown? If what I provided already isn't enough, just let me know. I've got more. And yes, I did try talking to a law firm about it (who? IDK, my memory is garbage) and they said there is nothing they can do. Think what you will, I just wanted to get this off my chest.

  • When you get a new doctor they can request your records from the previous one and you can ask the new doctor if he/she thinks things are going okay. Don't accuse the previous doctor of anything, just ask for a review. The new one may or may not say, oh crap. Ask for a copy of your records and take them to a lawyer. Always have your pharmacist check out your knew prescription and how it may interact with any others. They have way more knowledge about drugs than doctors do. My ex brother-in-law was a pharmacist and he'd tell me horror stories of doctors prescribing the wrong medicine. Good luck.

  • I'd trust a Dr to treat an infection but anxiety? They can only give medication that masks the symptoms and can be worse than the problem. I think a therapist would be a more appropriate course of action. Legally I have no idea so can't comment. If you're not confident in this Dr then definitely seek a second opinion.

    •
So, you think I have a case to press charges against this clown?
If this is your position, as has been mentioned, switch doctors. Continuing with this particular one has already proven to be of no benefit to you, so stop seeing them immediately. Get to a new one, and let them know every symptom as well as prescription that you have had. You may need a specialist, but you're not going to get to one without a doctor's referral. It sounds as if maybe the prescriptions you have been taking are adversely affecting other aspects of your body chemistry.

Just switch GPs. When you go in for your new patient appointment, see if they can have you recommended to specialists on your insurance. The kinds of problems you’re describing are things I wouldn’t trust a general practitioner to manage. Any good primary care doctor would’ve sent you to someone more knowledgeable instead of busting out the prescription pad.
