Do Not Blame the Devs.

In light of recent events I think this is something worth keeping in mind. Bungie upper management is 100% at fault here. We know the devs are talented and care a ton about the game. They'd been begging management to let them make changes to increase player trust and retention and were constantly rejected. Like dmg said, this situation was entirely avoidable. It's a shame they have to bear the brunt for the management's incompetency.

  • You know, I have my doubts about the developers of the game not having a hand in developing the game. Call me foolish, but I’m gonna bet they played their part in sinking the ship. I’d like to see what changes they supposedly begged management to have implemented though. I’m not going to assume it was anything great even if it’s true.

  • No, they are the ones to blame. I really doubt that the suits were the ones who made the cloudstriders, gave the horrible content for the seasons and all. Honestly, sucks to lose your job and i hope those guys get a new job fast but the CEO is working as a CEO and he made a bet, now we need to see if the game will get good.

    • Yeah, I’m sure the “upper management” were the ones who said: “All-black shader? No way! Make it a memento and attach a hideous rng grind to it!” “Five spoils of conquest per raid encounter?! I don’t think so. Nerf it to next to nothing so that buying a red border becomes next to impossible for most players!!!” “Unlimited revives? No way! Nerf that in all the exotic quests and make sure that the content gets harder! People are having way too much fun!” “More vault space?? Hahahaha!” “Accessing vault from orbit? Only when the company is literally dying as a last resort!” “Changing character appearance? No way! This is a completely unreasonable request! Everyone decides how and what they want to be once in life! It’s the same here! Right, guys? Oh except for …” The list is so much longer but I think the point is clear. They have made so many stupid decisions that have nothing to do with money so I doubt that any shareholder or manager would even concern themselves with that. Besides … all black shader for 10€ in Eververse would literally make up for the 45% revenue deficit. Just saying.

That is all the middle tier management and dev team teams you’re so staunchly supporting. Get a grip

The devs are very likely the ones to blame. Destiny is being millstoned away by the chronic little problems that upper management probably is barely aware of. The game needs to play well. Destiny does not play well for enough of the potential customer pool. Just think about the horrible array of quit moments that are clearly individual dev team decisions. Your bounty pool gets flooded with hyper specific objectives for nonsense no one enjoys doing. More generalized bounties have been needed for years. This is gravely, catastrophically compounded by gambit and crucible being rotten with hackers. Not only does the overly performance based and overly specific state of bounties and general grind objectives make the experience for the average player comprehensively unusable, but it's the reason so many people cheat to begin with. It's a death spiral situation by itself. Think about what it's actually like as a new, casual, introverted, or disabled player to interface with raids and dungeons. How is this an adequate state for anyone but carry services? They are horrible. They don't feel like epic encounters, they feel like hours long sequels to The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble. They make no sense in the context of an MMOFPS. They are not how you retain customers, they are how you alienate customers as if you focus grouped to achieve that end. Why are half my weapons still grey and locked to 1600? Upper management really sitting there making sure the devs wont let me use my Breachlight? Does upper management even know what a Breachlight is? It's nonsensical, and it was the catalyst of this whole mess. Not one single person bought the expansion because their weapons were power locked. Tens of thousands of people at minimum didn't buy the expansion because their weapons were power locked. Grinding new weapons themselves is barely even a part of the gameplay, the thing we're grinding for is power increases. There's no good reason for it. Frankly, it runs counter to the entire premise of the product. Did upper management sit there and micromanage the caustic new art style of the previous expansion? Why do we have the most off putting quest givers I have ever seen in my life in the most off putting zone I have ever seen in my life? These were decisions by individual artists. Neptunians make Jar Jar Binks seem like a master class in good character design. It's just stomach churning to interact with. Any one of these things is enough to make most of the customer pool nope out back to Warframe, and we have them all converging. It's too much for one product to endure.

          • Bungie long ago stopped caring about what the average player(most of its base) cared about. They wanted to coddle and cater to the brand new shiny toy (the almighty streamers). Bungie fell to the old saying F@*&k around find out. They found out. End of story. Fix it or find out some more.

              • Or we could just blame them as a whole. It's easy to blame management, but it's unlikely that the fault solely belongs to them. Maybe now they will focus on the game instead of all this social garbage.

              • Nope, blaming the devs 🤷‍♂️ Bungie, not bungie minus the devs, bungie. They didnt fight for anything we wanted, they didnt even know what we wanted. If the had/did, they would have said "we tried to warn thwm about player sentiment and begged them to let us add features players wanted" but NONE of them mentioned exactly what features they were talking about, because they themsleves didnt know either. All of bungie catches heat cause all of them are the reason the dumpster fire started in the first place. They show up to work in pajamas, that told me everything i meeded to know about the mentality and work ethic of the bungie "team".

              • Depends. I'm sure there's enuf blame to go around. Notice who got fired, their dept, etc. You'll see some unspoken patterns emerge. QA- game is always broken so, as someone coming from QA/QC, they sucked at their job or Bungo just doesn't care about quality so its a redundant position CM- more interested in "social justice" over SOTG but mgmt was too scared to say anything, leading to bloat of unqualified employees that couldn't be fired outright, leading to mass layoffs Mgmt-allowed it to happen if not directly complicit The situation is more complex but its ultimately mgmt fault. Whether it be from hiring, development, QA, etc. the only ones that can kill Destiny is Bungie and we're all tired of saying "told you so"

Layoffs suck, it happens.. Let's use common sense, if musicians and artists are getting laid off that means they've created the art and the music for what's upcoming and there's no more coming after that so why do you still need them anymore? Community managers.... If the community is this toxic are they managing anything properly? The ship is not on fire 45% decrease in revenue, is on us because we been burnt and didn't pre-order, it's just the end of a decade long road....

                      • 100% agree, most, that I know of, that were laid off are NOT the ones that made the game, well in the state few of us enjoy (trying to be nice). They have directors who tell them this is what you are going to do, now go do it. These who got FIRED because of others decisions gave us the actual reason we play and love(d) Destiny 1 and 2. Its the upper level decisions that have cursed this game. My hats and hearts off to those that gave us what Light they could! For those that think a simple modeler, texture, landscape, VFX, foley, music, SFX or other artist (spelled dev in this industry dev) makes the calls and are at fault have NO CLUE how this, and well, any industry operates! Truly we have seen the Light Fall! Now lets hope all this will provide a decent Final Shape for us, those that love(d) Destiny! And for the amazing devs that gave us what we actually like? Please ban together and show us something even greater! (we have a extra hundred+ bucks to spend!)

“Bungie” probably wanted a peaceful retired some of their crew members. Some of them actually work on the original “Halo” series which is about 15yrs old and probably at the age 40-50yrs old about now.

Absolutely. 👍 From info that’s coming out some of the devs were trying to change the game to bring people back/aid retention but had their ideas quashed by management. https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/11/01/the-bungie-and-destiny-2-situation-gets-worse-per-new-info/

I don't think it would surprise anyone if bungie now goes under, or at the very least destiny.. but what that really means is that more employees will lose their jobs through no fault of their own.. yes, some will be deserving, but most likely the higher ups will survive this crap
