They were doing more than just playing on vpn or from different locations if they got banned for account recovery. Don’t believe everything everyone tells or what you see posted online. That is just their way of trying to get sympathy.

Alright, thank you!! I really wanted to play because due to weather, sometimes I'm stuck in a random hotel room all day. So it would be nice to catch up on my weekly stuff.

And you certainly can do that…as long as you played on your own account. I would advise staying away from pvp/gambit while on hotel internet.

Got it, I'll stick to PVE when traveling. I heard their appeal system is brutal, so I just don't want to be locked out my account for a month until they see it's just because of my work.

Bungie does their due diligence before taking any action…to ensure they make as few mistakes as possible. While they do make mistakes (like we all do), they have the systems in place to make sure things get double-checked in the case of a mistakenly placed ban.
