I want to put forth my thoughts on why Young Ahamkara's Spine is currently in a fine place within the PvE meta and does not need to be changed. The recent TWID announced that the ability regen will be changed to "on kill" as opposed to "on damage" as it works currently. I believe this will fundamentally alter how this exotic is used in PvE and will result in a unique play style with a high skill ceiling being lost. This post does not concern itself with changes being made to the exotic in PvP.
YAS currently provides players with the capacity to perform an ability loop with very high DPS potential. Performing this loop correctly so that it can be maintained as long as possible requires players to use their grenade ability, melee ability, and dodge in a fast paced rotation, with a specific set of stats, mods, and fragments necessary to make it possible in the first place. Adding any weapons into the rotation, such as a Demolitionist rocket launcher or Witherhoard, requires an even more complex rotation that requires some degree of skill to pull off. This way of dealing DPS requires more skill and is arguably much more interesting than simply sitting back with a linear fusion or Izanagi's Burden and firing away from a Well of Radiance.
This rotation must also be done within Gambler's Dodge range of the enemy. This build has no damage resistance beyond what can be gained from Resilience and chest armor mods, and has very limited capacity for healing from Firesprites or Grenade Kills, neither of which are reliably available during a boss DPS phase. This means that players doing the damage rotation must either avoid incoming damage or are reliant on another player to provide healing/damage resistance. This has the knock on effect of encouraging other players to build into team play elements such as Lumina or Banner of War.
While the YAS build is strong, it is far from dominant amongst PvE Gunslingers. For general play Caliban's Hand is a more popular option as it allows for much more effective add clear than YAS even in its pre-nerf form. Athrys's Embrace is also a solid option for killing Majors and Champions, especially when paired with a weapon that can apply Freeze or a One-Two Punch Shotgun. Star-Eater Scales provides a great super damage bonus for those looking for an easier boss DPS bump to pull off, and even Ophidia Spathe with Weighted Throwing Knife and Skyburner's Oath provides an interesting method of chaining back-to-back Ignitions.
Young Ahamkara's Spine is by no means the only viable Gunslinger exotic, nor even the most dominant in PvE activities. As it stands now it is one of many viable an interesting options. However, the proposed change to ability refund on kill removes the ability to use this exotic in a boss DPS rotation, relegating it to being more suited to add clear. I believe it will even struggle to deal with Champions in Legend Lost Sectors, especially if there are not many adds around. It seems to me that there is nothing to be gained by this change, and a unique and genuinely engaging experience will be lost. The new YAS will still be usable, but it will certainly be a lot less interesting. I recommend leaving the exotic as is in PvE, and keeping any changes being implemented solely for the Crucible.

Having taken some time to play with new builds this season this change makes even less sense than it did before. There are some wildly powerful builds you can do with solar this season, especially with the artifact mods, many of which go way beyond what YAS could do before. Despite that I still very much prefer YAS. I love tripmines and Gunpowder Gamble just isn't quite the same. I can't agree with any power creep arguments around this nerf as there are plenty of extremely potent builds this season that this would likely barely compete with. Heck, I think the good old Assassin's Cowl Arcstrider with a 1-2 Punch shotty was more powerful than pre-nerf YAS. Still holding out hope that these will eventually go the way of Renewal Grasps and be reverted back to their old functionality.

You do have to appreciate the irony and humor that the biggest pvp related changes they ever make in this game are PVE nerfs lol.

Game companies today never attempt to buff things around a problem rather than just straight up nerf everything that gets too much attention. Some things obviously need to be brought into line when they are blatantly overpowered, but there are so many fun exotics that didn't deserve the nerf that shoved them into the vault for eternity. Young Ahamkara's will become another useless hunter exotic, pushing all current and new hunter mains to using Knucklehead or Stompeez. Add another to the pile of useless hunter exotics.

15 RepliesNerf it. It's meant to be a pvp exotic. It far surpasses things like Arthrys and Calibans. It was never meant to be a free ability spam exotic. Logic dictates it gets nerfed and so it shall

At this point cry me a river. Nerfs coming no amount of whining is gonna change it

Let it work with all wall stick grenades.

YAS has always intrigued me simply because it looks cool and I, having like a 0.61 KD, think that it shouldn’t be nerfed in PVE. Fix it in pvp so the sweatlord “I run adept immortal in my all white or black armor” can stop whining.

5 RepliesI'm curious, for the people who do want the nerf to apply to PvE, why? How does this exotic having its functionality heavily stripped down benefit your experience playing Destiny 2? Most of the comments are saying that they hardly ever see anyone even use this build. It's not crowding out other options, it's certainly nowhere near as strong as something like Banner of War Berserker. I don't understand what appeals to you about taking the build away from the people who do enjoy it.

I can't remember the last time I saw a trip mine thrown in PvE

4 RepliesThe only time I ran it was in PVE while using a Demo/ Adr. Junkie BXR and Forerunner as well as Gunpowder Gamble. It was fun to throw The Rock, then the mine, then GPG, the mine again, the Weighted Knife, then the mine again before the ignition procs and gives me back my mine if it hits multiple enemies, then the knife again because of scorched enemies giving back energy, then the mine one last time. Nades for days, assuming anything lived long enough to go through that. I think I know why they're nerfing it now, and it's not because of PVP, contrary to what they said. Still though, if they're going to nerf YAS because hitting enemies with abilities to get back energy breaks it, it just makes infinitely more sense to just reduce the gains in PVP like one of the stasis fragments (the grenade regen one). The only way this could come close to being remedied would be if ability kills give back full energy. Otherwise, if it truly needs a nerf because of this, then I can think of a few exotics that should get nerfed with it in the name of fairness: Contraverse Nezarec Sunbracers Skullfort Heart of inmost light And any others that only require hits to get back energy or a single kill to refresh. In the case of HOIL, that would need a full rework. I'd rather they not though because now there's no doubt in my mind they're going to nerf Caliban into the ground some time later.

Is like Bungie expecting hunter mains to adapt on their solar builds in PvE. But I hope they figure it out how to separate the sandbox. It’s reasonable for PvP. But as for PvE, it’s only going to be reliable on clearing ads on lower level strikes/encounters. If YAS gets outperformed by other exotics. I could imagine Bungie nerf that exotic “to be in line” with YAS
