Just endless waves of enemies rushing us, teams of 3-6 guardians, hold the Gate or something that's a Point of interest, each wave of enemies gets harder and harder, like Zombies from CoD. Maybe make it where our abilities charge while on the zone, but stop charging when we leave the zone, so we can go out and do a killing spree, but have to return to heal and charge abilities/supers.

I still struggle to see the fun in this in D2 Builds are so broken that it will always end when the waves are all big mini boss at GM level ....

I would play hours and hours of Firefight. I played it in ODST, Reach, and in Halo 5. I absolutely love that mode. Had good times in Horde Mode in Gears too. Destiny needs that. Patrol zones would make perfect destinations. Kind of like how these different games would use different areas for different purposes.
