I redeemed 44 vanguard engrams at prestige 4
... and ~half were instant delete armor pieces. Of the ~24 weapons that dropped, only 3 were somewhat interesting, but the perk sets on each were missing something important to make it either a PVP or PVE keeper. It was immensely disappointing.

It happens. RNG is a -blam!-. I’d quite like if you could consume, say, 128 (ie: 8 resets worth) of engrams, to focus for an exact roll of a weapon, but that’s likely never going to happen with crafting in the game and Bungie excluding playlist weapons from that system.
