How to be a better teammate in PVP/Trials

Hello Guardians. I would like to preface this by saying I only solo que and this post is aimed at the myriad of people that post about “bad teammates” and “bad luck” in Trials that also solo que. This week was especially sweaty but I learned a lot. I am by no means the best, but I learn and adapt quickly. Everyone is constantly putting each other down and blaming everyone and everything but themselves. Hopefully some of these tips will help some of you guardians be better teammates and find some success in Trials. 1. Stop being Sir-Flanks-A lot. Don’t do it unless you can win 1v1s consistently and know your weapon ranges. It can be deadly to flank in the right hands, but if it ain’t in your hands, don’t do it. 2. Stick to your teammates, but not too close. Hold the opposite side of the lane, or support your teammate close, not too far, just not on top of. Cloudstrike is a thing, and if your teammate is trying to snipe and you sprint into a lane, you all die. Let the sniper on your team snipe and gtf outta the way. 3. If you aren’t “good” play a support role and help out. Let the dude that is carrying do his thing and support them! Drop barricades, (not in our way!)and Rifts and healing nades. Be a team player. 4. USE COVER This should have been number 1. Always, always, always have cover close by so you can duck in and out. Being out in the open, especially in Trials or 3v3 is an instant death sentence. You will survive way more and win way more if you just use cover. Pretend it’s a GM. Guardians will mow you down just like in a GM. For the love of god don’t just sprint out into the open. 🙏 Please. 5. Get Revives! Crouch, get in cover, barricade or well and hold X! Just do it! Quickly! You have no idea how quickly a 1v1 can turn into a 2v1 win if you just revive instead of being RambosoloMckiller. Get the revive, reap the benefits. 6. Actually pay attention to what your opponents are using. Know the ranges they will play and adapt accordingly. You cannot just go into a match and use the same load out the whole time. If they are playing close, either throw on that shotty, fusion or sidearm and match them or die. A lot. I find myself switching my load out to match my opponents ALOT! 7. Stop sprinting around corners! Always assume there is a dude laning with a sniper or crouched with a shotty waiting. When you get to a corner either slide in if you are good like that or STOP SPRINTING and aim. The time it takes you to stop sprinting and aim is enough for you to be domed. 8. Always go toward the cap zone right off the rip. If you can hold it down and make them come to you, it’s more beneficial. You have time to setup a good lane or spot and clap some cheeks. Do it. 9. Learn from your mistakes! That sliding Anteas fusioning demon killed you two rounds in a row. So that means you should go to the same exact corner, and be in the same exact range and let them keep doing it right? Wrong! Switch it up. We are creatures of habit and the sweats are banking on exactly that. Mess them up by doing it differently and reap the benefits. Hope some of this helps you get a little better, and have a little more confidence out there in the trenches. If there is anything you would add, feel free! Let’s keep it positive and help each other out a little guardians. Thanks for sticking with me this far. Take it easy.

  • Intelligent Super usage. Holding onto your super can be useful as a deterrent to the enemy team in preventing them from popping their own, but that doesn't mean you should never use it. A good Super can win a round on its own, a bad one gives your opponents all the momentum. Generally, you don't want to use more than one Super in a round unless you would lose the match by not doing so. Unless you're getting a lot of kills and/or the match is lasting a while, you won't be getting the slower-charging roaming Supers; Well and Bubble are so prevalent because they're almost always up first and are almost a free round in this objective mode.

Agree with everything except for the changing loadouts part. Everyone plays best and is accustomed to a certain loadout. Trying to play to your enemies' weaknesses instead of your strengths allows them to dictate the flow of the match. Tactics are far more important than what loadout you're using. If you're having problems, try changing your TACTICS, not your loadout. EDIT: I will also say that 99.9% of the time, it's better to NOT flank. Flanking takes time, and your teammates are usually in a 2v3 during the time it takes to move into a flanking position. Holding lanes or an angle is far more important than "flanking" for that hero moment

I have to confess, on the limited occasions that I've played Trials, I've probably failed at every one of the things you've outlined here, likely multiple times. Should I make any future attempts, I'll certainly try to keep these tips in mind.

    • 10. Please don't take you super back to orbit. They can completely change the flow of the match.

    • Good tips! Here are a couple from me: - Pay attention to when heavy is spawning (I see a lot of players who don’t even contest heavy and then get killed by it). - When the opposition have heavy/super don’t bunch up (I also see a lot of rounds lost because players get taken out by the same heavy/super). Having said that, here’s a third tip: - If you solo queue, understand that other players are going to play however they like. If that’s stressful for anyone, you’re better off making a fireteam.

    • Good tips..I especially appreciate the stay tf outta sniper lanes if you aren't the one sniping. Can't tell ya how many times a dingleberry blocked my shot.

      • Yeah most important is imho don’t always run head on and die instantly. I know I am not good so I never do that or else I am liability. First pick is critical in trials.

Those are all really good. Like you said, proper use of cover is something that people don't do enough of in this game sometimes. It's also something that people tend to have to learn through practice in any pvp game. The only other thing I'll add is that, especially in comp and trials don't do the same thing over and over again. If you screw up a round or a round just doesn't go well and you're playing solo just kind of let someone else take the lead and try not to go charging off. Oops that one was your number 8. It really is a good set of tips.

Nice list. Definitely a solid foundation for players to use and build upon.

          • As a solo player, although I don’t play Trials much, these ideas work really well in any PvP mode. While I try to do all of what you suggested, number two really stands out. I play solo, no mic, and I learned right away to stick with your teammates. Often times you can get the kill if they don’t, or they react to you and get the kill if you don’t. I know your post was more towards Trials- I would add: - if you play an objective based mode like Control- be willing to play the objective. Help your team by capturing the location, and or defending it. The other side might get more kills, but if your side works better at completing the objective, you’ll probably win.

          • 10. If you rushed 3 rounds and died everytime, why do you think doing it again will work?
