I haven't played it, but have just finished watching a video by LegacyKillaHD talking about the controversy surrounding the game.
The one line that he said which really stuck with me is that the game is doing so well not because it's a technical marvel or innovative, but because it gives players what we want, have been starving for.
The success of this game and the reasons why seem to be really scaring many in the industry. I think this shines a bright light on the biggest problem today. Companies want to dictate how and what we play while trying to shoehorn as much microtransaction as possible into their games.
We are getting fed up with it. Especially the older gamers that grew up when video games were still relatively new. The limitations in technology drove creativity and many developers made games with love. Largely today it is all about the bottom line.
Companies are free to develop whatever products they please, but it doesn't do anyone any good if what they are selling serves their wallets instead of serving humanity.

1 ReplyEdited by ShadowAngel9228: 8/13/2023 8:34:59 PMI don’t think developers themselves are really threatened by BG3, that’s more on the management and investors level. Not that I think it’s truly a threat to warrant the industry changing cause it’s not gonna change on the AAA side of things. AAA wise they’re to comfortable making games without having to be creative and they’re comfortable enough to have micro transactions because your average gamer will spend money into it. Them articles are just over exaggerated to me. It’d be nice to see some stuff change but I know better. And I see someone else posted about it on here but it’s unrealistic that the AAA side developers a game the way Larian studios did with Baldurs gate 3. You’re not going to see a triple A studio build a game with fund raiser money from fans, they get that from their parent company/publisher. They also don’t get to self publish their games like Larian does, and they do not get to spend however many years at their own pace on a game like Larian does. They have to meet deadlines set by management and the investors. The situation is so different that it’s not going to affect the AAA industry.

1 ReplyThis exact same situation happened with Elden Ring, another complete game that was slandered by modern game developers. This is why it is essential to vote with their wallet. After all, if money is these companies’ driving motivation, then money will be what gets their attention.

3 RepliesEdited by Divine_Majin93: 8/11/2023 10:48:39 PMOnly Capitalism would attempt to convince people that creating a high quality product is bad lol. AAA gaming is becoming a downright joke anymore. If a studio has -blam!- talked BG3, then you know their executives are a bunch of greedy -blam!-.

Top-down RPGs haven’t gone away for a reason. Because they’re good.

6 RepliesWhen you buy a car they come with 4 wheels and an engine. Game devs want to sell you a car with 3 wheels and half the engine for full price, then ask you to pay for the rest as DLCs. Larian made a complete game, and that is something unheard of these days. They ACTUALLY made something worthy of the money they asked for it, and showed how things SHOULD BE, what the standard should be for all. Everybody's pissed cause of this, cause Larian made them all look bad, terrible even, but all they did is reveal them for what they truly are - scammers.

3 RepliesI know no one actually cares about the initial tweet this is all referring to. But the guy was right. Unfortunately, media will do what media does and put a spin on whatever was said.
